Chapter 269 He Knelt Down
"Blind date?" Oscar's mood instantly soured, his eyes narrowing sharply.
They weren't even divorced yet, and she was already thinking about dating someone else. Could this guy be better than him?
Oscar said coldly, "Go check, I’d love to see how great this blind date is!"
He looked calm, but his fists were clenched tight.
He was already picturing himself strangling the guy meeting Pearl.
Just then, Jeffery walked out of the room.
Oscar glanced over and locked eyes with him.
Jeffery didn't look away, staring back with meaning, while Oscar didn't back down either.
They passed each other in silence, their eyes doing all the talking.
Oscar's face stayed cold, and he was on high alert. This guy wasn't simple and he was living next to Pearl.
Meanwhile, Pearl was chatting in a private room.
Kenneth Thompson stood up and introduced himself, "Hey Pearl, I’m Kenneth. Remember me? Our families used to live next door when we were kids." He smiled warmly, clearly liking Pearl.
"Kenneth, do you remember? You two were inseparable as kids," Kittie said. "You'd wake up asking for Kenneth and wanted to play with him." Everyone laughed.
Kenneth blushed. "Really, Aunt Kittie? I didn’t know that."
Kittie added, "You two have been close since childhood."
Pearl frowned, sensing Kittie was trying to set them up. "That was ages ago. Why bring it up now?"
Kittie replied, "Kenneth's a good guy. His family lives abroad now, but he still remembers us and you. He asked about you as soon as he got back. See how sincere he is."
She praised Kenneth. Pearl looked at Kittie, whose eyes saying Kenneth wasn't bad. Given the situation, Pearl asked, "Mom, are you setting me up on a blind date?"
Maria and Richard Thompson noticed Pearl's hesitation, so Maria said, "Pearl, we’re just having a meal and catching up. It’s been so long since we last saw you. Richard and I both like you and wanted to see you."
Pearl looked at them and said politely, "I remember you, Maria, Richard. I get you want a good match for your son. But my mom probably didn’t tell you—I’m married."
Kittie's face fell. Maria and Richard exchanged glances and said, "Your mom did tell us. Don’t worry, it’s just a divorce. Marriage is just a piece of paper. Nowadays, who doesn’t have a few relationships? It’s no big deal. We don’t mind."
Pearl was speechless. She was married, and they didn’t mind. Their son surely wouldn’t want to marry someone who’s been divorced, right?
Kenneth added, "If my parents don’t mind, I don’t mind either." He seemed to like Pearl.
"Pearl, I know what you’re worried about. As long as you two get along and are happy, Richard and I will be satisfied," Maria said with a smile, moving closer and looking at Kittie. "In our family, you’ll never be wronged."
These were all promises made to Kittie. She knew the kind of life Pearl had in the Brown family. Money didn't matter; despite having plenty, life was still tough. Being together would only lead to ridicule due to class differences. She didn't want Pearl to repeat the same mistakes.
The Thompson family had been friends for years, and even though they lived abroad, they hadn't forgotten them. Kittie trusted they valued Pearl.
Plus, if Pearl went abroad, she wouldn't see Oscar anymore. Kittie wanted to sever their last connection. They were still entangled, not yet divorced, so she had to make the decision for them.
She had explained the situation to them, and they didn't mind Pearl's marriage, showing they truly liked her.
At this point, it was the best she could offer Pearl, but Pearl said, "Thank you for your kindness, but I can't..."
Before she could finish, the door to the private room opened.
"Pearl hasn't divorced yet; she's still my wife!" Oscar suddenly walked in, eyes cold and sharp. "Did you ask me before setting up this blind date?"
Pearl looked over and saw Oscar standing at the door with a cold expression.
Everyone was stunned. Kittie stood up, clearly displeased. "What are you doing here? We didn't invite you. Leave now."
She was afraid Oscar would ruin everything.
Not only did Oscar not leave, but a group of people also rushed in, surrounding them.
Kittie's face changed dramatically. "Oscar, what are you doing? Do you want to start a fight?"
Oscar's gaze towards Kittie was still gentle, but his actions were firm, and his words polite. "Kittie, Pearl and I are still married. Bringing her to a blind date is unfair. I came here just to take my wife away, with no other intentions."
Kittie retorted, "Did you ever treat her as your wife? You said marrying Pearl was just a contract. Since it was fake, divorcing now would be fair. Our family may not be wealthy, but Pearl is our treasure, and I won't let her be wronged."
"Your family may not cherish Pearl, but someone else will," Kittie said coldly. "I won't let her be mistreated anymore!"
"I love her!" Oscar suddenly declared.
Kittie was taken aback. "What did you say?"
Oscar turned to Pearl and said, "I love Pearl. I don't want to divorce her. Kittie, I admit our marriage didn't start well, but I've fallen in love with her. I want to take care of her and protect her with my life. Please trust me and let her stay with me."
Pearl was stunned, her hand clenching involuntarily.
Oscar walked over, took her hand, and his warm palm felt scorching. His deep eyes looked into hers. "Pearl, can you trust me this time?"
Kittie hesitated but remained cautious. "I don't believe you!"
"You've already lost my trust. I didn't protect my daughter before, which led to her being ridiculed by your mother. Now I must protect her. No matter how much two people love each other, they still need a harmonious family. If the family isn't harmonious, even the deepest love will turn to despair." Kittie, speaking from experience, didn't want Pearl trapped in an unhappy marriage.
Oscar glanced at Kittie and suddenly knelt down on one knee.
