Chapter 841 Adopted Son
Nathaniel casually tossed her the keys. "I won't be needing these."
Even though he sounded casual, he meant it.
Saskia hesitated for a moment before taking them. Having a car would be super convenient, and it would make it easier for Benjamin to get to and from school without always relying on Nathaniel for rides.
"Since you guys won, the Pearl Harbor project is yours."
An unexpected bonus.
While Saskia was surprised, Nathaniel seemed unfazed, like he saw it coming. He exchanged a few polite words with Tomas before taking her back.
In the car, Saskia couldn't help but ask, "Did you know this would happen?"
"Know what? You mean Tomas's party? If it wasn't to pick a partner, do you think he'd throw a party just for fun?" Nathaniel lifted his eyelids, his gaze calm and indifferent.
It was like he had everything under control.
Saskia nodded and then stared out the window, lost in thought. Nathaniel seemed pretty good at handling these things, which explained why Robbie went to great lengths to keep him at the company.
The business trip was supposed to last three days, but they secured the project in just one.
Saskia thought they would head back early, but then she found out Nathaniel had rented out the beach.
The hotel had ocean-view suites, and the beach outside was part of the hotel property.
When Saskia was asked to come down early in the morning by the smiling hotel manager, she was stunned.
"You're saying someone invited me down and rented out the entire beach?"
"Yes, Ms. Fuller," the hotel manager replied with a polite smile, treating her like the most important guest. "Mr. Egan, who is staying with you, is already waiting downstairs."
Nathaniel had gone all out again.
Feeling awkward under the hotel manager's knowing gaze, Saskia reluctantly changed her clothes and went down.
She had to see what Nathaniel was up to.
As soon as she stepped outside, Saskia was struck by the vast ocean, standing in awe for a few seconds before the gentle sea breeze brought her back to reality.
Seagulls flew in the distance, and the white waves crashed onto the shore, wetting the sand before quickly retreating.
"Beautiful, isn't it?" Nathaniel had approached her without her noticing.
Saskia blurted out, "It's beautiful."
She paused, realizing that Nathaniel had arranged this for her. The thought made her blush as she met his deep gaze.
Saskia deliberately turned her face away. "The work is done, why aren't we heading back? Who's watching the company with both you and Caleb out here?"
Nathaniel's eyes darkened slightly, and he gave a faint smile. "Someone will be watching."
Robbie cared too much about the Egan Group to leave it unattended, even if the management was away on a business trip. Even while sick, he wouldn't let go of control, just like he wouldn't let go of Nathaniel.
Realizing she had said something wrong, Saskia lowered her eyes. "Sorry, I shouldn't have mentioned..."
Nathaniel, hands in his pockets, looked out at the seagulls flying freely by the shore.
They sat by the beach, enjoying the perfect weather for a seaside visit.
Saskia held a glass of chilled watermelon juice, reclining on a lounge chair and feeling the sea breeze. It was a rare moment of relaxation.
She hadn't felt this relaxed in ages. It wasn't that she didn't enjoy spending time with Benjamin and the others, but being a parent often meant losing time for oneself, especially for mothers who often sacrifice their own needs for their children.
Saskia thought about how long it had been since she had time for herself.
She glanced at Nathaniel, feeling a slight emotional stir.
Suddenly, she understood why he had done this.
They stayed an extra day in Majestic City and flew back the next day.
Nathaniel didn't say it, but he was still concerned about the company, while she missed Heidi and Benjamin.
Benjamin was thrilled to see her.
"Mom, you're back!"
Saskia caught Benjamin as he jumped into her arms, struggling a bit. "Benjamin, be careful. Mom can't catch you right now."
Benjamin stepped back, feeling a bit guilty. "Sorry, Mom."
"It's okay, Benjamin. As long as you're healthy, Mom is happy," Saskia reassured him.
Upon returning, she was pleasantly surprised to find that Heidi's condition had improved significantly.
Saskia immediately took Heidi to the hospital for a check-up.
After a thorough examination, they received encouraging news.
"The damaged area in the patient's brain is starting to self-repair. With appropriate medication, she should recover in the future," the doctor said, without specifying a timeline.
Even though it wasn't certain, it was still great news for Saskia.
She happily returned home and immediately asked the nanny about what had happened during her business trip, wanting to know the main reason for Heidi's improvement.
The nanny thought for a moment. "Well, nothing unusual really. Mrs. Fuller had frequent nightmares and would wake up holding that bracelet, calling your name."
Saskia felt a pang of bitterness but quickly recovered.
As long as Heidi was getting better, nothing else mattered.
After the nanny left, Benjamin approached, his face showing hesitation. "Mom, is Grandma sick?"
Saskia was surprised, thinking Benjamin didn't know the details. "You know?"
Benjamin nodded.
She was even more surprised.
"Do you think Grandma is different?"
"No, Grandma is very good to me. She's just a bit different from others."
Seeing Benjamin's serious expression, Saskia was both surprised and delighted. She hugged him tightly, her voice choking up. "That's right, Grandma is just a bit special."
Benjamin's acceptance of the real Heidi was a pleasant surprise for Saskia. Not everyone could accept a family member with cognitive impairments, especially a child.
Saskia had worried that if Heidi's true condition became known or if Benjamin found out, it might affect him. That's why she had been hesitant to tell him.
But Benjamin had figured it out on his own and accepted it well.
When Saskia told Nathaniel about this, she spoke with a hint of pride. "Benjamin is really great. I didn't expect him to think this way."
"You taught him well," Nathaniel replied.
"Caleb didn't get the project. What did Mr. Egan say?"
"Caleb has been removed."
Saskia was shocked.
Nathaniel adjusted his mechanical wristwatch, his long fingers tapping lightly in the air. "The board decided today. The reason given was that Caleb has no blood relation to the Egan family."
