Chapter 850 Are You Really So Heartless to Me

"I've got some work to handle tonight, just a quick trip. I'll be back first thing in the morning," Nathaniel said.

"You're about to get married, and you're still so focused on work?" Jade sighed.

Nathaniel glanced at Saskia. "The partners over at Sunrise City requested a meeting. It's been scheduled for a while, can't cancel it."

Saskia smiled gracefully. "Then go ahead. The sooner you leave, the sooner you'll be back. Stay safe."

"Missing me already?" Nathaniel teased.

"Don't be ridiculous, of course not," Saskia said, her lips curling in resignation.

Saskia walked him to the door. Nathaniel looked around, and seeing no one, he planted a kiss on her forehead. "Wait for me."

Saskia nodded slightly, feeling helpless. "Okay."

The trip was short, just an hour away. Nathaniel had barely settled into his hotel room when there was a knock at the door. It was a waiter holding a tray with two glasses of wine.

"The hotel is celebrating its anniversary and is offering guests a taste of our special wine."

"Come in," Nathaniel said, eyeing the waiter with a faint smile. "If it's an anniversary celebration, why aren't there any advertisements outside?"

The waiter stiffened slightly, then turned back with a forced smile. "We haven't had time to set up yet. Enjoy your wine."

Nathaniel didn't press further. He closed the door and lay down on the bed.

In the middle of the night, he heard rustling at the door.

Nathaniel was instantly alert, his eyes snapping open as someone entered the room.

He got up and turned on the light, freezing the intruder in their tracks.

Seeing who it was, Nathaniel frowned. "Amy?"

Amy closed her eyes, steeling herself. She estimated the drug's effects were about to kick in. Her silk robe slipped off, revealing a low-cut camisole that accentuated her curves. She moved forward, wrapping her arms around Nathaniel and whispered, "Nathaniel, I know you're struggling. Let me help you."

Nathaniel's face turned icy. He grabbed Amy's wrist and pulled her away forcefully.

"What are you trying to do, Amy?"

"I'm your fiancée, Nathaniel. I love you. Don't leave me," Amy pleaded, pressing herself against him.

Nathaniel pushed her away harshly. "Amy, how did you get in here?"

By now, the drug should have taken effect.

But Nathaniel seemed unaffected...

Amy's gaze fell on the untouched glass of wine on the table.

Seeing her look, Nathaniel understood the wine's true purpose.

"You drugged the wine, didn't you? Amy, since it's come to this, don't blame me for being harsh."

Amy screamed and lunged forward, trying to destroy the evidence. But Nathaniel was quicker, pushing her away and dialing the police.

"Are you really this heartless?" Amy cried, tears streaming down her face. "I've been with you for so many years, and you just throw me away like this. Why?"

She had thought that staying by Nathaniel's side would eventually make him see her as his wife. But she never expected Jade, who had been on her side, to agree to Saskia joining the family. She had nothing left. Rather than watch them get married, she decided to take a risk. If they consummated their relationship, Saskia would never marry him.

Nathaniel's attitude was cold. "I think I've made myself clear."

Amy, unwilling to miss this chance, tried to tear his clothes and her own.

But she was no match for Nathaniel. He pushed her onto the sofa, opened the door, and the police were already there, along with some reporters who seemed to have been pre-arranged.

"This woman broke in," Nathaniel said mercilessly. "And she had my room key. The wine was brought by a hotel waiter, and there's something wrong with it. Please test it and handle it accordingly."

The police, unfamiliar with such situations, checked the surveillance footage and found that Nathaniel's account seemed accurate.

The reporters followed the entire process.

Nathaniel glanced at them coldly. "I bet you already have your headlines ready: 'Famous Lawyer Meets Lover Night Before Wedding,' right?"

The reporters, caught off guard, scratched their heads awkwardly, looking at each other in silence.

Nathaniel snorted. "If I see that headline tomorrow, don't blame me for suing you for defamation!"

Everyone knew Nathaniel's prowess as a top lawyer. They shook their heads. "Of course not, Lawyer Egan. We journalists have basic professional ethics."

"Write whatever else you want." Nathaniel threw out this line and left.

After a night of investigation, Nathaniel was preparing to board his flight when he received a call from the police.

"We've confirmed that the wine contained a sedative. The hotel staff were bribed to give Amy the room key. Amy is in custody and wants to see you."

"I don't have time. Just handle it according to the law," Nathaniel said coldly. "I'll have a lawyer take over the case and file charges."

The police, hearing his tone, knew there was no point in persuading him. They had hoped for an out-of-court settlement, but it seemed impossible.

After landing, Nathaniel rushed home.

He wanted to see Saskia immediately.

Passing by a flower shop, he had already driven past but decided to turn back. He picked out a large bouquet of fresh, vibrant flowers.

Seeing Saskia, Nathaniel presented the flowers.

"Do you like them?"

Saskia's face lit up with surprise. "You rushed back early in the morning and still bought me flowers? Aren't you tired?"

Nathaniel gazed into her eyes, his look tender. "Holding these flowers on the way back, thinking about seeing you soon, I didn't feel tired at all."

Saskia blushed slightly, her eyes full of affection.

She smiled, took the flowers, and sniffed them gently. Then she looked up at Nathaniel and said softly, "I love them. Will you always be this good to me?"

Nathaniel gently brushed her hair aside, his eyes full of warmth.

"We've been through so much to be together. Of course, I'll always be good to you. Silly, what are you thinking?"
