Chapter 646 A Public Gift

Daryl's eyes landed on Desiree, but he spoke to the crowd around him, "The auction's about to kick off. If you don't wanna miss out, better get ready."

Daryl didn't feel like saying more, and the sharp folks around him got the hint.

"Mr. Fields is right; this auction's a big deal! Time to head in."

Just as those words left his mouth, the lights in the venue dimmed completely.

Amid the crowd's murmurs, a spotlight quickly found the host walking in. After some small talk, the auction officially began.

Everyone found their seats, and Desiree followed Harold to one side.

As they left, Daryl said to her, "Catch you after the auction."

Desiree glanced at him but kept quiet.

She and Harold snagged a spot with the best view. Once they sat down, she firmly demanded to see his hand.

Seeing his reddened knuckles, Desiree frowned, both angry and worried. "You said you were fine. Does this look fine to you?"

Harold shrugged it off like it was no big deal.

The injury on his hand was from earlier when he fought those guys. He'd do it again if he had to, especially since they had taken Desiree hostage.

"I'm fine," he reassured her, holding her hand warmly. "It'll be fine soon."

After a few more comforting words, Desiree finally calmed down.

The auction had already gone through five items.

The first five were just small trinkets, but then the more collectible stuff started showing up.

When the amethyst was presented, Desiree clearly heard the gasps around her. Lots of people were eager to bid on it.

Desiree glanced at the thumb-sized amethyst in the host's hand.

Under the light, it sparkled brilliantly.

Even Desiree found it hard to look away.

She got why all those wealthy ladies and heiresses were eyeing this amethyst.

"If you want it, we can bid for it," Harold said, placing the bidding paddle in her hand.

Desiree was startled and quickly said, "I don't want it! It's just a gemstone, nothing special. I have plenty of these."

This amethyst was one of a kind, so it was impossible for Desiree to have many like it.

She said this only because she was thinking about Harold's current situation.

After all, it was still early days. This amethyst looked super valuable, and it would cost a fortune to buy it. It seemed too wasteful and not worth it.

Desiree explained this to Harold, but he insisted on giving her the paddle. "Don't worry about the money. Whatever you want, I'll get it for you."

A warm feeling spread through Desiree's heart.

Soon, the introduction of the amethyst was complete.

Next, it was supposed to enter the bidding phase. Desiree expected a fierce competition.

But the host unexpectedly smiled apologetically. "This amethyst was supposed to be the highlight of the auction, to be won by a lucky guest here. But unfortunately, due to a great favor someone has done for Synergy Global Corporation, we have to apologize to everyone. This gemstone will be withdrawn from the auction and given directly to that person."

"Why? This is so unfair to us!"

"Exactly, we came to this auction because of your company's reputation."

"It's not appropriate to give it to someone without notifying us first. At least give us a proper explanation."

The crowd was pretty ticked off hearing this.

The host kept wiping cold sweat off his forehead, but he had no choice but to keep going.

"This amethyst will go to Mr. Fields."

Hearing this, the angry socialites finally calmed down a bit.

After all, the Fields Family was no ordinary family. They owned half the city's market, with the other half belonging to the Brown Group.

And everyone knew the Fields Family had only one heir in this generation, Daryl, who had just come back from studying abroad.

"Mr. Fields, please come up and take your item," the host said.

A man stood up from the audience and walked forward.

His graceful demeanor showed he was well-educated from an elite family, exuding a commanding presence.

He took the box from the host and suddenly looked in a certain direction.

"Did he just look over here?"

"You must be mistaken."

"No way! I saw it clearly. I just don't know who Mr. Fields was looking at. Whoever it is, they're really lucky to catch his eye and might marry into a wealthy family."

Everyone was buzzing with envy, but Desiree felt a bit nervous.

No one knew better than her that Daryl was looking at her.

Her palms felt slightly cold, but then a hand reached out and held hers tightly, instantly dispelling all her anxiety and unease.

Desiree exchanged a glance with Harold, feeling reassured.

In that moment, Daryl had already sat back down. He didn't come over and hand the item to her as she had feared.

But this left her even more uncertain about his intentions.

"Miss Sandvik." An assistant quietly approached, holding the box that Daryl had taken. "Mr. Fields asked me to give this to you. He said it belongs to you."

Desiree didn't take it. "I can't accept this. Take it back."

"But..."

"It would make me feel guilty to accept such a valuable item."

The assistant was clearly in a tough spot, hesitating for a while, even considering just forcing the box into Desiree's hands.

The item had to be delivered to her.

Otherwise, if Daryl saw him bring it back intact, he would definitely be in trouble. The thought made the assistant shiver.

Just as he was about to act, a hand suddenly interrupted him and firmly returned the box.

Harold's deep eyes were intimidating. "Take it back."

Harold's demeanor was so imposing that even Desiree was startled.

Harold had always been good-tempered. Having worked as an assistant to Oscar for many years, he naturally had to handle various relationships well.

Over time, he had developed a gentle and reserved personality.

At least until today, Desiree had never seen him so angry.
