Chapter 251 Almost an Ex-Wife
He didn't argue with her, ignoring all her cries and tantrums.
To him, Hathaway's tears meant nothing.
Seeing her husband's indifference, Hathaway felt her defenses crumble and argued even more passionately, "Don't just stay silent. In your eyes, Magdalen is more important than me! I am your wife, Alfonso. You can't treat me like this!"
Her eyes were red from crying, hoping her husband would care.
Even a glance from him could calm her anger and unease.
Alfonso stayed silent, treating Hathaway like a stranger.
Oscar watched without comment. To him, they were just his parents in name.
Growing up in this environment, he was used to it and could stay indifferent.
Alfonso, fed up with Hathaway, stood up and told Oscar, "I'll go first. Let me know when Magdalen wakes up!"
Oscar lowered his eyes, cold and unresponsive.
Alfonso didn't wait for an answer. He had no expectations of Oscar, knowing they weren't close and there was no need to pretend.
He didn't care about Oscar's dislike for him.
Only Magdalen, his biological sister, mattered a bit.
With that, Alfonso left. Hathaway, seeing him treat her like air, chased after him. "Alfonso, you can't leave. You owe me an explanation!"
Haley watched Hathaway's emotions flare up. Even her arguments with Magdalen weren't this intense. With only Hathaway by her side, she naturally followed.
As soon as Hathaway grabbed Alfonso's sleeve, he shook her off like she was contaminated. He looked at her coldly. "I've been kind to you. Don't make me despise you further!"
Then he took a wet wipe from his pocket, wiped the spot Hathaway had touched, and threw it away.
"Hathaway," Haley called out worriedly from behind.
She walked over but slowed down upon seeing Alfonso's cold demeanor.
In front of him, she seemed to lose her confidence. She held onto Hathaway, afraid she might fall, carefully supporting her.
Pearl witnessed the entire scene: Hathaway's outburst, Alfonso's indifference.
How much disdain must he have to act this way?
Pearl felt deeply moved.
This was the most tragic state of a loveless marriage.
Hathaway had lost miserably.
Although she hadn't seen Alfonso many times, she should have known their marriage was broken, even if she didn't say it out loud or pay attention to it. She never thought it would end so tragically.
Alfonso's gaze never lingered on Hathaway, no matter how hard she cried or argued.
From a woman's perspective, her husband's indifference must have been the most devastating blow.
She wondered if, given a bit more time, she would end up like Hathaway.
The situation with the Brown family might push her to become like Hathaway.
Alfonso left, leaving everyone in silence. Only Hathaway cried silently, with Haley comforting her.
Pearl glanced at Oscar.
He said nothing, his face dark, neither questioning nor surprised, as if he didn't care about not being Hathaway's biological son. Had he known all along? She had heard Magdalen mention it a few times before but never thought much of it. Maybe Oscar had known for a long time and just kept it to himself.
"Pearl," Adrian said softly, coming to her side. "Why don't you take a rest? You can't keep this up."
Pearl had been standing for a long time and felt back pain, but she wanted to wait for Magdalen to come out. She sat down nearby. "I want to wait here until Magdalen wakes up."
"I'll stay with you," Adrian added.
Pearl nodded.
Oscar, leaning against the door frame, noticed Adrian's concern for Pearl, whose eyes was full of tenderness.
Pearl seemed to accept his kindness gladly.
A wave of irritation swept over Oscar.
His gaze grew colder, and he deliberately kicked the chair next to him, making a noise.
It was the chair Adrian was sitting on. He looked up, and Oscar said coldly, "Sorry, I accidentally kicked it!"
"It's okay," Adrian replied amiably.
Oscar, however, said, "This is the family waiting area. I don't know what Mr. Egan is doing here. Isn't your company busy enough?"
Adrian smiled and said, "I'm here with Pearl. She's pregnant and wants to wait for Aunt Magdalen to wake up. It's not very convenient for her, so I'm here to make sure she's okay."
"Aunt Magdalen?" Oscar was even more displeased. "Adrian, since when did my aunt become your aunt?"
Adrian's eyes held a smile, unlike Oscar's coldness; he had a stronger sense of friendliness. "Mr. Brown, you might not know, but Magdalen and I are friends. She's someone Pearl respects, so naturally, I respect her too!"
Oscar clenched his fists, restraining the urge to punch him.
"I didn't expect the always upright Mr. Egan to take advantage of others. What right do you have to call her Aunt Magdalen?"
Adrian replied, "I call her that because Pearl does."
It sounded as if he and Pearl were a married couple.
Pearl also noticed Oscar's anger and said, "We're here waiting for Magdalen to wake up. Magdalen had nowhere to go, and Adrian provided a place. We should thank him for that, not be harsh on him!"
Seeing Pearl defend Adrian so much, Oscar sneered, "Who is he to you? I haven't said much, and you're already defending him. Do you plan to marry him in the future?"
Pearl looked at him and said, "Who knows? Maybe."
Her words left Oscar speechless, making his anger flare even more.
His cold eyes fixed on Pearl, wanting to see what was in her heart that made her say such words.
Their gazes locked in a standoff, neither backing down, as if they were on the brink of a confrontation.
However, the door to the operating room opened.
Magdalen was wheeled out, and their gazes shifted to her.
Pearl held onto the gurney, her anxious eyes on Magdalen's haggard face, her head and body wounds all bandaged.
She had never seen the usually lively and cheerful Magdalen lying on a hospital bed. She felt a pang of sadness, and tears sprang to her eyes.
"Who is the patient's family?"
"Me!"
"Me!"
Pearl and Oscar answered quickly.
They glanced at each other, still technically married, feeling very awkward and quickly looked away.
The doctor took one look and said without hesitation, "You two are a couple, right?"
