Chapter 244 Seems Like I Haven't Met Your Parents
"Are you talking about that abduction case?" Nathaniel nodded. "Yeah, I remember. It was a big deal, and I was the defense attorney."
It wasn't a public trial back then.
There were so many details involved that it left a strong impression on him.
"Yeah."
Nathaniel knew the case inside out. Oscar then said, "It was around that time Haley left the country without a word."
Nathaniel shrugged. "Maybe it was just a coincidence. Haley's just a girl; she wouldn't be mixed up in something that big, right?"
If she was involved, it would drag a lot more people into the mess.
It would also mean Haley wasn't as simple as she seemed.
Nathaniel barely knew Haley. Despite his long friendship with Oscar, he'd only seen her a few times.
He had no plans to get closer to her.
"I hope so." Oscar sighed. "But you know, even though the case was solved, the mastermind was never caught."
"There were a lot of loose ends, and you got seriously hurt because of it. Now, you tend to forget things when you drink too much." Nathaniel kept the conversation going. "I remember you rescued a girl back then. You told me you both went through hell and back. Do you still remember?"
Oscar hesitated, then said softly, "I have some memory of it."
He had gone undercover to rescue some kidnapped women and children.
It was a huge operation.
They weren't just into abduction; they dealt in guns and drugs too.
They were pure evil.
In a small, dark room, constantly guarded, there was a girl locked up...
It was different from where the other kidnapped women were held.
Oscar's eyes darkened as he got lost in thought.
But Nathaniel didn't let him dwell on it. "That was years ago. So many of the bad guys got caught. If there's still a mastermind, I hope he stays hidden. If he shows up, you'll be his first target!"
Oscar, however, said, "I hope he does show up."
"Oscar, you're not in the military anymore. Stop thinking about this stuff; it's not good for you. As for Haley, if she's involved, she'll slip up eventually. But I don't want you taking any more risks. With your current status, there's no girl who needs you to save her." Nathaniel's tone was serious, warning him.
Oscar was now the CEO of the Brown Group, not a soldier.
He had no duty to rescue anyone anymore.
He'd already given everything, living every day in danger.
He owed nothing to anyone.
"I get it," Oscar said. "Things are different now."
"Good to hear."
After the call, Oscar noticed someone at the door. He looked sharply. "Who's there?"
The person at the door hesitated, then pushed it open.
Pearl stood there, her eyes on him. "Sorry to interrupt. I had a question for the doctor and didn't expect you to be here."
Seeing her, Oscar's eyes darkened even more. "The doctor's not in."
"I know." Pearl started to close the door. "I'll come back later."
As she was about to leave, Oscar called out, "Pearl."
She paused and looked back at him. "Is there something else?"
Oscar took a few steps forward and softly advised, "Stay out of Magdalen's business."
Pearl hesitated. "Magdalen got into trouble because of me. I can't just ignore it. I know you want to protect Haley, but She's been through so much online abuse. It needs to be cleared up. She can't be bullied for nothing!"
"Things aren't as simple as you think," Oscar said, his tone serious.
Pearl smiled. "I know it's complicated. Haley isn't ordinary. If she can do such things, she can't blame others for retaliating. You might not want to find a way, but I will. I'll help Magdalen."
"I never said I wouldn't help her," Oscar added.
Pearl looked at him skeptically. "Didn't you let Haley move to Serenity Haven Estates? I'll stay with Magdalen. If there's any danger, I'll protect her!"
Earlier in the ward, Oscar's words were clear.
Magdalen was about to cut ties with him.
She thought Oscar wouldn't let things get worse.
But she was wrong.
For Haley, he'd do anything.
So, she had to take care of Magdalen.
Oscar frowned. He wasn't sure and didn't want to make promises lightly. "Until things are clear, you and Magdalen should stay safe and go out as little as possible."
He didn't say much, not even an explanation.
Pearl got angry, didn't want to respond, and turned away with a cold face.
Watching her leave in anger, Oscar made a call to have someone follow and protect them.
Soon after, Haley's luggage was packed.
"Oscar," Haley said. "We can go now."
When Haley tried to hold Oscar's hand, he evaded her touch. "I'll have someone take you there."
"Aren't you coming with me?" Haley looked puzzled.
Oscar wrote, [Sending you to Serenity Haven Estates is for your safety. I have other things to do. If you need anything, call Harold or ask the servants at Serenity Haven Estates to help you.]
Seeing Oscar so distant, Haley felt a bit sad.
She could go to Serenity Haven Estates, be near Oscar, but their relationship hadn't progressed.
On second thought, it was still good.
Everything had to come slowly.
Haley obediently said, "Okay, I'll listen to you. I can't hear now, and there will be many obstacles outside. I don't even know if I can take care of myself. Having you around makes me feel at ease."
Oscar stood to the side, playing with a lighter in his hand, his eyes obscure.
After Haley finished speaking, Oscar seemed not to be listening and wrote meaningfully, [By the way, we've known each other for so long, but I don't think I've ever met your parents. Are they still abroad?]
Haley's face stiffened, and she nervously clenched her fingers.
Oscar noticed her subtle movement. "Is it inconvenient to say?"
Haley forced a smile. "They're all abroad. When I went abroad, they naturally moved there. I came back because I couldn't bear to leave you and was used to the environment here."
Oscar didn't press further, put the lighter away, and put one hand in his pocket. [If you're ready, you can go. Harold is waiting at the door.]
"Okay."
Harold came in to get things, looked up at Oscar, and nodded.
Then, Haley followed Harold out.
At this moment, many reporters were still gathered downstairs.
Haley disguised herself and left directly from the underground garage.
