Chapter 302 Buying Food for the Girlfriend
Pearl felt a lot calmer now, clearly at peace. Oscar had been worried about her for a long time, so all the harsh words had vanished.
She hugged Oscar. "Let's stop arguing. Can we just talk things out from now on?"
"Okay," Oscar replied softly.
Pearl sensed something was off. "Are you unhappy?"
"No," Oscar said, gently touching her face. "You said we wouldn't argue anymore. How could I be unhappy?"
Pearl looked into his eyes. "What if you've lost faith in me and plan to leave? Wouldn't everything I said be pointless?"
"That's not happening," Oscar reassured her. "We won't separate."
"You won't divorce me?"
They had been arguing about this for a while. She had wanted a divorce before, but now, thinking about everything Oscar had done for her, she changed her mind. Things hadn't gotten that bad yet. Pearl might not find someone like Oscar again. She still couldn't let go. The baby growing inside her needed a father. A child growing up in a healthy family was better than her raising it alone. She needed to confirm Oscar's thoughts.
"We're not getting a divorce," Oscar said softly. "You were the one insisting on it. I never said I wanted one."
Pearl remembered what he had said before. "You gave me that idea. You said our marriage was a transaction and said so many heartless things. No matter how humble I am, I couldn't hold on. You never thought about living well with me."
At first, she wanted to live well with him. Now that he had coaxed her, it really was a bargain for him.
Oscar didn't want to upset her again, so he conceded, "Okay, it's all my fault. You were right to scold me."
With him being so compliant and patient, Pearl had no choice but to forgive him.
"By the way, I need a check-up," Pearl remembered.
Oscar asked, "What kind of check-up?"
"A physical check-up." Pearl showed him her hand. "Look at all these bruises. I'm worried something's wrong with my body. Besides, I'm pregnant. I can't afford any mishaps. I need to get checked out to see what's going on. The sooner, the better. It will have less impact on my body. Of course, I hope it's just a false alarm."
"You already had one," Oscar told her. "There's nothing wrong with your body."
He stroked Pearl's head.
"Really?" Pearl was a bit skeptical. "Then why do I have bruises?"
Oscar pulled down her sleeve and tidied it up. "Maybe you bumped into something. Don't overthink it."
"That's possible."
Pearl didn't doubt him and trusted Oscar's words. She had a check-up before, and there were no issues. It was unlikely there would be any problems in such a short time, so she trusted him.
He brought her shoes over and placed them in front of her. "Your feet are cold. Put on your shoes."
Pearl did as he said.
"Are you feeling better?"
"Much better," Oscar replied. "A few more days of rest, and I can be discharged. Being able to get out of bed and walk around means there's no major issue."
"That's good," Pearl walked with him and said. "I won't let you protect me next time."
"Why?" Oscar turned to look at her. "Why would you say that?"
"I'm going to learn self-defense." Pearl looked at him determinedly. "That way, I can protect myself and won't need you to protect me."
Oscar laughed. "Silly girl."
"I'm serious," Pearl insisted. "You have so many people around you who are good at it. I can just find someone to teach me."
"I can do that," Oscar offered.
Pearl brightened up. "Great, then I won't need to find a teacher."
"We'll talk about it later," Oscar said. "You've been stuck in the hospital. Let's go out and have some fun."
Pearl clung to his arm. "I want orange juice and cake."
"Okay."
It was rare for them to spend time together, and Pearl felt genuinely happy. This was a new feeling for her, and she wished it could last forever.
Elijah drove while they sat in the back seat. Pearl soon felt tired and leaned on Oscar's shoulder. Seeing this, Oscar supported her head to make her more comfortable and then placed her on his lap. Usually, Pearl would wake up, but this time she seemed to be in a deep sleep.
This worried Oscar. He feared she might fall asleep one day and never wake up again. He looked at her pale face, furrowing his brows with concern, and held her tightly.
"Oscar, we're here," Elijah said.
Seeing that Pearl hadn't woken up, Oscar didn't want to disturb her. "Drive around a few more times."
"Okay."
After three more laps, Pearl finally woke up.
"Are we there?" she asked groggily, and checked the time. "Why did it take so long?"
"There was traffic."
"Let's get out then."
Pearl opened the car door and got out first. The square was bustling with people and stalls, and the 3D screens on the street were displaying advertisements.
"There's popcorn!" Pearl spotted it immediately.
Oscar followed her gaze and, seeing her so happy, said indulgently, "You're like a little kid."
"Do you think I'm being childish?" Pearl asked.
"No, I just think you're very cute," Oscar said, holding her hand like an ordinary couple.
"I want caramel popcorn," Pearl insisted.
"I got it." Oscar immediately bought her a bucket.
Pearl took a small bite, and it was sweet.
"Try some," she said, offering it to his mouth.
"I don't like this," Oscar replied. He never ate such things.
"You have to try."
Under Pearl's insistence, Oscar took a bite. The popcorn wasn't bad, but he didn't particularly like it.
"It's good, right?" Pearl smiled. "It's very sweet. I really like it now."
"As long as you like it."
"I also want fried chicken."
Pearl wanted to try everything she saw along the way. Some stalls had long lines, and the food smelled delicious. No matter how long the line, Oscar would queue up if she wanted to eat.
Pearl waited on the side, watching him chat with the people in line.
"Are you buying for your girlfriend?"
"You too?"
"Yes."
Paul Young and Steven Moore looked at Oscar. "You too?"
Caught off guard, Oscar forced a smile. "Me too."
Paul said, "Why are women so troublesome? They always want to eat things with long lines. It's such a hassle!"
"What's so good about it? Women are just troublesome. I'm standing here in the cold and spending money. Women just love to waste money!" Steven added.
Oscar retorted, "If you're good to your wife, your money will increase too!"
