Chapter 586 Meeting
Desiree lifted her head and snapped, "If you think so, then show me the proof. Otherwise, quit talking trash."
Harold went quiet, thinking, 'Proof? Just a matter of time.'
Meanwhile, the square was buzzing with people. Christopher's eyes locked on the candy apples, and he yelled, "I want the biggest one!"
He was drenched in sweat, clearly having a blast.
RavenWing paid for the candy apples and handed them to Christopher, giving him a gentle nudge to take it slow.
As Christopher grabbed the candy apples, RavenWing watched him with a loving smile.
Christopher took a big bite and shared, saying, "Grandpa, this is so sweet! You gotta try it!"
"Nah, you go ahead," RavenWing chuckled, and Christopher nodded, diving into another one.
Just as he was about to chow down on the third one, he froze. "Grandpa, I don't feel so good..."
Before he could finish, he collapsed.
"Christopher, what's wrong?" RavenWing crouched down and scooped him up.
People crowded around, and someone shouted, "Quick, get him to the hospital! Anyone call the 911?"
"Get in my car. It's right by the curb. Come on!" a kind soul offered, as others helped RavenWing into the car to rush to the hospital.
Christopher's face was ghostly pale, but his breathing was steady. It was weird—he looked bad, but seemed okay.
After they got him to the ER, RavenWing called Pearl, feeling totally lost as he waited outside.
If anything happened to Christopher, he'd never forgive himself.
RavenWing blamed the candy apples, kicking himself for not being more careful.
Soon, Pearl and Oscar showed up. Pearl yelled from a distance, "Dad, what happened to Christopher?"
RavenWing stood up, guilt all over his face. "He passed out after eating the candy apples. It's my fault, I should've watched him better."
"Dad, don't beat yourself up. You didn't know there was something wrong with the candy apples." Pearl tried to comfort him, her eyes glued to the emergency room door.
The door swung open, and the doctor came out looking serious. They all rushed over. "Doc, what's wrong with him?"
The doctor frowned. "There's something unidentified in his body. We need more tests to figure it out. Stay here tonight, and see me first thing in the morning."
Pearl almost fainted.
"Doc, he only took a bite of the candy apple. I still have it. Should I get it tested?" RavenWing handed the candy apple to the doctor, who shook his head.
The doctor explained, "It's probably not the candy apple. Just stay with him and take him to his room."
Pearl, Oscar, and RavenWing were all at a loss. They followed the nurse to the room, eyes glued to the unconscious Christopher, not knowing what to say.
Oscar checked the time, patted Pearl, and walked over to RavenWing, saying, "RavenWing, I'll have someone take you home first. We'll come back early tomorrow."
"You all go home. I'll stay here with Christopher. He'll want to see me when he wakes up," RavenWing said, pulling up a chair to sit by the bed.
Oscar glanced at Pearl, about to say something, but she shook her head. "I'm not leaving either. I'll stay here with Christopher."
Oscar sighed, "Alright, we'll all stay. I'll go grab a couple of blankets."
They knew they weren't much help here. If Christopher woke up and saw everyone, he might freak out, thinking he was seriously ill.
But Oscar knew they were all worried. He didn't want to leave either, so they all camped out at the hospital for the night.
The doc said it wasn't the candy apples. Oscar had a gut feeling but didn't want to stress Pearl out. He planned to dig into it in the morning.
In the dead of night, Christopher woke up.
He saw Pearl, tears in her eyes. "Am I sick again?"
"No, the doc said it's nothing serious," RavenWing reassured him.
Christopher wasn't buying it. If there was no problem, why weren't they going home? Why were they still here?
Pearl walked over and hugged him, softly explaining, "The doc said you fainted 'cause you got too excited. We stayed 'cause you hadn't woken up yet."
"Yeah, that's right," RavenWing chimed in.
Christopher relaxed, leaning into Pearl's arms and slowly drifting back to sleep.
The next morning, the doc came to check on them. Seeing Christopher awake, he asked a few questions and then pulled Pearl and Oscar aside.
"Doc, can we start the tests now?" Pearl was anxious. Who knew if the unknown substance was dangerous?
The doc nodded. "I'll write the order. Start with a blood test. After that, he can have breakfast. I'll have a nurse come to inform you about the next test."
"Anything we need to watch out for?" Pearl and Oscar were on edge.
The doc shook his head. "Not for now. Just keep him calm and make sure he doesn't worry."
They went back to the room. Pearl asked Christopher what he wanted for breakfast to keep his mind off things.
A nurse knocked and came in to draw blood.
Seeing all the small tubes, Christopher asked Pearl, "Didn't you say it's nothing serious? Why do they need so much blood?"
"It's 'cause the doc is being thorough. They want to see if you've been eating junk food. A blood test can show that. Have you been eating on time?" The nurse jumped in to help.
Christopher said seriously, "I've been eating on time and haven't had any junk food. You can test it, there won't be any problem."
"That's good. It might sting a bit, but don't be scared," the nurse said, having Pearl hold Christopher as she drew the blood.
Just then, Oscar's phone rang. He stepped out to answer it. "Who is this?"
"Mr. Brown, you don't need to know who I am. You just need to know what happened to your son."
Oscar's face darkened. "What did you do to him? Spill it now, or when I find you, you'll wish you were dead."
"Wish I were dead? I'm afraid it's your son who will feel that way. Just so you know, Oscar, if I'm not mistaken, your son should be having symptoms now, and the docs can't figure it out, right?"
"Who are you, and what do you want?" Oscar was losing it.
The caller laughed but didn't answer. Furious, Oscar immediately texted Harold to trace the number.
