Chapter 18 I Want to Chat with You
The warm sunlight streamed in through the glass windows of Gallery A, shining on the them. They strolled leisurely through the exhibition hall, admiring various exquisite artworks.
Although they were similar in age, their personalities were quite different. Janetta was lively and outgoing, Pearl was gentle and caring, while Adrian was calm and reserved.
"Mr. Egan, Pearl, let's grab a cup of coffee across the street," Janetta suddenly suggested, excitement gleaming in her eyes.
Pearl and Adrian exchanged glances and nodded slightly in agreement. Then they left Gallery A together and headed towards the coffee shop across the street.
The street was bustling with traffic and pedestrians hurrying by. As they reached the crosswalk, they waited for the traffic lights to change. Pearl stood closest to the road, with Adrian standing behind her and Janetta on the inside.
Suddenly, an accident unfolded. An electric bike carrying a bulky load careened out from the corner, appearing to be in a rush, and executed a risky turn at an angle.
Adrian reacted swiftly. He pulled Pearl into his arms and turned around, using his back to shield her from the approaching vehicle. This action not only protected Pearl but also prevented himself from being grazed by the bike.
The driver of the electric bike seemed unaware of the near-miss accident he had just caused. Without even pausing, he wobbled away from the scene.
Pearl was quite shaken by the unexpected incident, her heart pounding heavily and her breathing quickened. She was still held tightly in Adrian's arms, feeling his strong heartbeat. After a few minutes, she gradually calmed down.
"That was close," Pearl said softly, her voice trembling slightly.
Janetta, witnessing the scene, felt both worried and angry. She stomped her foot and said indignantly, "That person didn't even apologize, just drove away."
Taking a deep breath, Pearl tried to calm herself down. She gently pushed away from Adrian, mustering a forced smile. "It's okay. I'm fine, just a bit scared. The light's green, let's go."
They crossed the street cautiously and arrived at the coffee shop on the other side. As they entering, a rich aroma of coffee greeted them. They chose a seat by the window, offering a view of the bustling street outside.
The waiter promptly served coffees to them. The warm drinks seemed to dispel the fear from earlier and eased their emotion.
"I didn't expect Mr. Egan to react so quickly," Janetta couldn't help but tease, "Seems like you've been exercising a lot, huh."
Adrian smiled faintly and didn't respond. His gaze inadvertently flickered towards Pearl, as if checking to see if she had completely calmed down.
Noticing Adrian's concern, Pearl felt a warm feeling in her heart. To lighten the mood, she began to reminisce about childhood anecdotes.
"Do you remember when we went on a field trip with our classmates when we were kids?" Pearl asked with a smile. "Some of us got lost that time, and it was Adrian who led us back home."
Janetta immediately became interested. "Oh yes, I remember that you fell and scraped your knee that time. So it was Adrian who brought you back!"
Recalling the past always brought joy. They recounted childhood memories with laughter, nostalgia, and even some slightly embarrassing secrets.
Janetta listened with great interest, interjecting with jokes from time to time, making everyone laugh. Pearl smiled and nodded occasionally, her eyes revealing a fondness for the past. Although Adrian didn't speak much, he would add a few details at the right moments, enriching the memories.
Outside the window, the sunlight continued to illuminate the scene. Inside the cafe, they immersed themselves in warm memories, as if they had been transported back to the carefree days of their youth.
Their laughter, the aroma of coffee, and the hustle and bustle outside all blended perfectly, creating a beautiful scene on that afternoon.
Despite growing up and leading different lives, their cherished friendship remained steadfast. On this fortuitous afternoon of reunion, they rediscovered the familiar bond and warmth they once shared.
