Chapter 189 Did Being Kind to Me Make You Feel Superior?
Pearl was so lucky tohave such a loving family.
Sophia knew the kindness she received was because of her friendship with Pearl.
"Stop crying, girls shouldn't shed tears so easily." Evans couldn't bear to see a girl cry.
But Sophia couldn't stop.
Pearl was the kind of person who easily empathized with others.
She knew that Sophia had no parents and only had Hunter as a relative, so she felt compassion and wanted to bring her to meet her parents.
"Don't cry, you've cried enough today," Pearl didn't want her to cry.
Sophia held back her tears, sniffled, and hugged the juice to her chest. "Thank you, uncle, auntie I'll come to visit you next time."
Kittie and Evans saw them off at the door.
Sophia couldn't help but cry again as she went downstairs.
Pearl handed her a tissue.
Oscar, however, was quite indifferent and said in a flat tone, "If Mr. Doe sees you crying like this, he'll think Pearl bullied you."
Pearl was trying to comfort Sophia, but Oscar's words made her feel even worse.
Pearl said, "It's not that serious. Don't make her cry."
Tears of blame are harder to bear than tears of gratitude.
Sophia blew her nose with the tissue. "Pearl is gentle, Oscar, you should stop talking. I'll tell Grandpa you bullied me."
Oscar didn't care. "Do you think that'll work?"
Despite Sophia's attempts, Oscar continued to mock her, which frustrated her. . She looked at Pearl. "Pearl, how can you stand Oscar? He doesn't understand romance at all!"
If it were Sophia, she would definitely not like such a cold man.
Pearl said, "Send Sophia home."
Oscar had no choice but to start the car. "Alright."
Meanwhile, Hunter felt anxious and worried upon hearing about Sophia being bullied, but he was grateful that Pearl had protected her.
He was very grateful to them. "Pearl, thank you for helping out this time. I feel bad for putting you in this position."."
He really liked Pearl.
Oscar's wife, naturally, Hunter liked her very much.
But having Pearl protect Sophia and even getting a scratch made him feel apologetic.
Pearl said, "It's nothing, Mr. Doe. Don't feel sorry. Sophia calls me sister-in-law, so we're family. There's no need to feel bad."
Hunter looked at Sophia, seeing that she was well-behaved and not causing trouble, and said, "Do you see how good Pearl is now?"
Sophia hugged the juice bucket awkwardly and said, "Grandpa, it was my fault. I won't do it again. Don't worry, I will never become the kind of despicable person you dislike."
Hunter sighed, feeling relieved. He only had Sophia as a granddaughter and hoped she would be a righteous person.
In the Doe family, there had never been a despicable person.
"As long as you understand, Pearl's efforts to save you weren't in vain. Why you lose your phone and bag? You had them when you went out, no wonder we couldn't reach you," Hunter said.
Sophia thought that her things were with Aurora, but she didn't explain this to Hunter.
Pearl and Oscar dropped Sophia off at home but didn't go inside as it was already late, and they drove back.
The next day, Sophia hadn't gotten up yet when she heard a servant knocking on the door. "Miss, someone is here to see you."
Sophia groggily asked, "Who is it?"
"Sophia, it's me," Aurora said from outside.
Sophia immediately woke up and hurried to open the door.
Early in the morning, Aurora appeared at her house.
"What brings you here?"
Aurora handed her the items. "You left your things at my place yesterday. We were supposed to have dinner, but you suddenly disappeared, which worried me. I'm glad you're okay!"
She handed Sophia her bag.
Sophia, however, had her doubts and asked, "Weren't you on the phone next to me yesterday? I was gone for just a moment, are you sure it was me who disappeared?"
Aurora didn't tell the truth.
Aurora had indeed seen Sophia being bullied, but she didn't step in to help.
She was also a girl, and without anyone to back her up, intervening would have brought trouble upon herself.
She could only watch coldly and escape when no one noticed.
Aurora couldn't let Sophia know that she was aware of the danger Sophia was in, yet she acted as if nothing had happened.
Aurora smiled and said, "Yes, I had an important business call that lasted over half an hour. When I finished, you were missing. I thought you couldn't wait and went back first. But your bag was left at my place, so I brought it over."
"Sophia, did something happen?" Aurora asked, pretending to know nothing.
If Aurora had said this before, Sophia would have believed her without question.
Aurora was Sophia's friend.
When Sophia studied abroad, she was alone and had no friends.
Meeting Aurora, who was from the same city, naturally made Sophia feel close to her.
At that time, Aurora took good care of Sophia, making her feel warmth, and Sophia considered Aurora as a friend.
But this time, when Sophia was in danger, Aurora disappeared, and Pearl's words made Sophia suspicious.
"Why are you unhappy?" Aurora saw Sophia not speaking and affectionately grabbed her hand. "Are you mad? It was my fault for not having dinner with you yesterday. How about we go out for a meal later to make up for it, and I apologize"
Sophia didn't hide her feelings. "Yesterday, I had dinner at Pearl's house. I'm not hungry now."
Aurora's face stiffened, and she asked, "Why did you go with her? Did she say bad things about me?"
Aurora instinctively thought of this and feared Pearl might have said something, so she continued, "I was wondering why you were being cold to me today. She must have bad-mouthed me, right? She can be two-faced. I have been with her for a longer time than her. Don't you know my character?"
Before the danger, Sophia would have joined her in criticizing Pearl.
But now, a significant change had taken place in her mind.
Sophia pulled her hand away and frowned. "Pearl has never said anything bad about you. I've never heard her say anything, but I've heard plenty of bad things about Pearl from you."
She stood up for Aurora, unable to bear seeing her mistreated, but she wasn't a fool.
Pearl had never spoken ill of others.
Everything came from Aurora's mouth.
Seeing Sophia reject her touch, Aurora's face filled with sorrow. "Do you hate me now? Have you forgotten how I took care of you abroad? Don't you know me? I always thought of you whenever I had something good. I stayed with you when you were alone and scared abroad.."
Indeed, Aurora was right. Sophia had received a lot of help from Aurora when she was lonely abroad.
Sophia had a question in her heart and looked at her. "At that time, you didn't know my family situation, only that I had no parents and was stranded abroad. Were you genuinely kind to me, or did being kind to me make you feel a sense of superiority?"
