Chapter 285 The Gunshot
Oscar was their leader.
After calling Pearl, Oscar sensed something was wrong and rushed back overnight.
He never thought someone would try to kidnap her!
He couldn't let them get away with it.
"Keep chasing," Oscar said seriously. "There's still someone in their car, be careful!"
Blowing out the tires would stop them, but Pearl was in the car; he couldn't risk it.
If they crashed, Pearl would too, and she was pregnant.
They had to catch up.
Meanwhile, Barbara and Patrick were crossing a bridge.
Patrick said, "Almost there, once we cross this bridge, we'll be safe."
Barbara saw the vehicles behind them getting closer. "It's not that simple."
With only three wheels, they were much slower.
In a few minutes, they'd catch up.
Patrick looked in the rearview mirror. "What should we do?"
Barbara glanced at the rushing river below. She wondered if Pearl's death would complete their mission.
Barbara had to deal with Pearl first to make them stop.
"Stop the car," Barbara said.
Patrick was surprised. "What?"
"Stop the car," Barbara repeated. "Pearl's body is worthless now, just throw her down, and we'll complete the mission!"
"Alright!"
They braked sharply.
Barbara quickly got out and opened the trunk.
Pearl was curled up, trembling.
Suddenly, the bright sunlight shone in, blinding her. She covered her head with trembling hands.
Barbara was surprised Pearl was still awake.
But she didn't have time to think and pulled Pearl out.
Pearl was dazed, her eyes vacant, until her feet dangled, snapping her back to reality.
"No!" Pearl's hands, covered in blood, grabbed Barbara's arm.
Barbara looked at Pearl's pale face. "Sorry, but you have to die this time. If you don't, many people will."
Pearl stared at Barbara with wide eyes. "I saw you, you and Jeffery!"
"What?" Barbara was momentarily confused.
Pearl continued, "Sunlight, you haven't seen sunlight in a long time!"
Barbara's body stiffened, staring at Pearl's red eyes.
Her hands trembled, and Pearl's body swayed in mid-air. Her eyes were moist. "In the dark room, we longed to see the sunlight."
Barbara's expression turned to shock, her eyes reddened.
Barbara thought, 'The dark room. Could she have been there too?'
They all wanted to see the sunlight, not stay in that small room, but they would never see the light again.
"Who are you?" Barbara asked.
Suddenly, a gunshot rang out.
Patrick said, "Barbara, should we throw her down or not?"
Barbara looked over and saw military vehicles stopping nearby, with several people getting out.
She hesitated, unsure whether to throw her down.
"Barbara!" A voice came from the other side of the bridge.
Barbara turned and saw Donald sitting in the car, looking at her grimly.
"Put her down." Seeing the tense scene, Oscar was worried sick, unable to imagine what would happen if Pearl fell.
Barbara looked at Pearl, gritted her teeth, and said, "Sorry!"
Her grip loosened, and Pearl clung desperately, wanting to live.
Suddenly, Barbara placed Pearl's hand on the railing.
Pearl looked at Barbara in shock.
Barbara said, "This is all I can do for you."
Pearl grabbed the railing with both hands, her feet dangling. She struggled, feeling she was about to lose her grip.
"Pearl!" Oscar saw her hanging there and ran over without hesitation.
"Oscar, it's dangerous!" The people behind him tried to stop him.
But Oscar only thought of Pearl; he couldn't care about the danger. If he didn't go, Pearl would fall and die.
He broke free from their hands and ran over.
Donald watched, a smile playing on his lips, as if he had seized an opportunity.
Barbara and Patrick fled quickly, entering Donald's control range.
"Oscar!" They tried to rush over, but gunfire stopped them in their tracks.
Only Oscar reached Pearl's side.
Pearl heard the gunfire and saw the dangerous scene, feeling terrified.
She didn't know who she had offended, but those images haunted her like a nightmare.
She thought, 'Do I have a connection with these people? Who am I?'
As Pearl pondered, a pair of hands grabbed her. "Pearl!"
Pearl looked up and saw Oscar's worried face, trying to pull her up.
Pearl said, "Why are you here? There are gunshots, it's dangerous, you should go!"
Oscar gave her a reassuring look. "It's okay, I'll save you first!"
Pearl saw Barbara running away, with many armed people, not ordinary folks. "No, there are too many of them. If you stay, they'll target you. I'm fine, I can hold on!"
Pearl was desperate, on the verge of tears.
Oscar held her hand tightly and smiled. "It's okay, I'll protect you. I won't let you get hurt."
Pearl's eyes reddened, and she shook her head. "No! I don't want you in danger!"
Oscar ignored her pleas and quickly pulled her up.
Pearl started crying, knowing Oscar was risking his life to save her.
She thought, 'How could I let him be in danger? If I hadn't gone to the hospital for a check-up, none of this would have happened.'
Oscar pulled her back and held her in his arms, shielding her from the gunfire. "Don't be afraid, I'm here. I'll take you away from this place."
The gunfire was close, and Pearl felt it passing right by her face.
She was scared and worried about Oscar's safety.
At this point, she could only pray everything would be okay.
She held onto Oscar tightly. "Let's go, let's go quickly!"
At that moment, Donald aimed his gun at Oscar, a determined smile on his lips. "Finally, I've got my chance!"
There was a single gunshot. Pearl's face turned pale, frozen in shock as she stopped in her tracks.
