Chapter 268 She Seems to Be on a Blind Date
"Isn't it a bit much to finish all the soup?" Janetta said.
Pearl nudged her, took Jeffery's bowl, and said, "Alright."
Jeffery replied, "I like soup. Anyway, I have work to do, so I'll leave you to it."
Pearl said, "Okay."
He nodded and left. Pearl saw him out and closed the door.
Jeffery paused outside, staring at the door for a moment before heading downstairs to his Mercedes.
As he was about to get in, a nearby sports car's window rolled down, revealing Barbara, a striking redhead. "Why'd you change locations without telling me?" she asked, smiling.
Jeffery smiled back. "You found me fast."
Barbara stepped out, looking around. "This place isn't your style."
She knew Jeffery, who was not only a clean freak, his personal belongings were also exquisite and delicate.
Jeffery shrugged. "Needed a change. What's up?"
"The boss wants to see you," Barbara said, smiling.
Jeffery's eyes narrowed. He nodded and got into his car, following Barbara's lead.
Back inside, Pearl was tidying up. "I'm off to work. The key's here if you need it."
Janetta, on her phone, said, "Kittie asked if you're divorced. I told her no."
Pearl looked up, changing her shoes. "Why'd you mention that?"
There must be something off if Kittie turned to Janetta, instead of Pearl.
Janetta replied, "She's your mom. If I lied and she found out, she'd never trust me."
Since Pearl's parents had found out her contract marriage, they had always wanted her to get rid of it.
Pearl sighed. "Alright, let her know. I'm off."
She packed some strawberries and left. Near the office, feeling nauseous from morning sickness, she decided to walk the rest of the way, eating strawberries as she went.
A car followed her closely, its engine loud. Barbara, driving the sports car, matched her pace. "Where'd you get the strawberries?" she asked.
Pearl found it odd. "They weren't bought." She didn't mention it was a gift.
Barbara squinted. "So, they were with you all along."
Pearl was confused. "What do you mean?"
Barbara smiled. "Nothing, just envious."
Jeffery had carefully cultivated those strawberries, not letting anyone else touch or eat them. Yet, here they were with Pearl.
Pearl thought for a moment and asked, "Do you know Jeffery?"
Barbara smiled. "We're friends."
"What's so special about these strawberries?" Pearl asked, curious.
Barbara kept expressing her envy, her gaze lingering on Pearl. "Jeffery planted them. No one else is allowed to touch them."
Pearl stopped in her tracks, surprised.
"I've got to go," Barbara said, speeding off.
Pearl looked at the strawberries, puzzled. Jeffery had said all the neighbors had them, but was she the only one?
She shrugged it off and headed to the office. After Chloe left, both she and Emma got promoted. Emma was thrilled to finally get out from behind the computer.
Pearl was busy with a deadline when Kittie called.
"Mom."
"How's work? Are you settling in?" Kittie asked.
"Yeah, it's going well," Pearl replied.
"You haven't been home in a while. Come for dinner today," Kittie insisted.
"I'm really busy today, maybe..."
"You can't be busy all day. Tomorrow's Sunday, you must have some time. Come home, we have guests too," Kittie said.
"Who else is coming?" Pearl asked.
"You'll see," Kittie replied with a smile.
Pearl agreed. "Alright, I'll come tomorrow."
Kittie was pleased. "Great, we're all waiting."
The next day, Pearl went home for lunch, but it was at a high-end restaurant, which was unusual.
At the entrance, she saw Kittie looking around. "Pearl, over here."
"Mom, why are we eating out? Where's Dad? Is there a special occasion?" Pearl asked.
Kittie smiled and took her hand. "You'll see."
Inside a private room, a middle-aged couple and a well-dressed man about her age were waiting. The man looked nervous and smiled at her.
Maria Diaz stood up. "Kittie, this must be Pearl. She's grown up beautifully. Come, have a seat."
"My daughter is beautiful, isn't she? I told you, you'd be pleased," Kittie said, beaming.
Pearl was confused. "Mom, what's going on?"
"These are the guests I mentioned. We're just having a meal. This is Maria's son. He just returned to the country. You two can get to know each other," Kittie explained.
Pearl realized it was a setup for a blind date.

Meanwhile, Oscar arrived at Pearl's house. He rang the doorbell multiple times but got no response.
It was the weekend, and she wasn't home. He had come to see her as soon as he finished work.
"Where could she be?" Oscar frowned. "Find out where Pearl is."
"Mrs. Brown went home. Seems like she's on a blind date."
