Chapter 82 Strange Relatives
He observed so attentively that he even noticed when she experienced stomachaches during her period. This was something Pearl had never anticipated.
She used to think that even if she spent her whole life with him, he might never know what she liked or the condition of her body. If she were to fall ill, he would probably be the last one to find out.
But now she felt that maybe it was because they had spent so much time together that even if he didn't want to remember these things, he would still take notes.
With this realization setting in, Pearl blew on her cold hot chocolate and drank it all in one breath.
"Get some good rest," Oscar said as he carefully tucked her into bed.
Pearl gazed at him and asked, "Where are you going later?"
"I'll be at home, nowhere else," Oscar replied.
Pearl wondered where he had been the past few days, and where he would go today. He had so many women, there must always be somewhere he could go.
Oscar noticed the disappointment on her face. The next moment, he lay down beside her and slipped under the covers, placing his hand on her abdomen. "Is it still hurting?"
Pearl's body stiffened as she stared at Oscar. "Why did you lie down?"
"I just wanted to accompany you for a while," Oscar said, as his hand gently stroked her stomach to help ease her pain. "Maybe this will make you feel a little better."
Pearl pursed her lips, feeling guilty for deceiving him. But she continued to lie, "I feel a bit better."
"Don't stay up too late," Oscar's voice was soft and deep as he advised. "Staying up late can cause hormonal imbalance. You need to take care of your body, or else you'll be in pain every time."
His concern made Pearl's heart ache. He also had such a caring side. Pearl added, "Actually, I was quite surprised when you took me to meet Felix today. And you introduced me as your wife in front of him."
Oscar hesitated for a moment and asked, "Did it bother you?"
Pearl shook her head. "No."
"As long as you're not bothered," Oscar replied.
He was afraid that she would be upset about him exposing their marriage without her consent. He was also afraid that she would resent this identity in her heart.
Pearl didn't speak anymore, she just felt like Oscar was starting to consider her and respect her more. However, every time she thought about how he married her just to use her, all her beautiful fantasies were shattered once again.
"Felix's son died unexpectedly while on a mission," Oscar whispered in her ear. "He's getting old and doesn't have anyone to take care of him. He's been refusing to go to the hospital even when he's sick. He used to enjoy being surrounded by people, but now he's become quite lonely. I've been too busy with work to visit him, so maybe you can go see him more often."
Pearl didn't expect this turn of events. "His son died? So he doesn't have any children anymore?"
Oscar replied, "He has a granddaughter."
"Felix is quite pitiful.
He was such an amiable old man, yet he had to experience such a tragedy."
"Yes." Oscar nodded and didn't say anything else about it. "You look tired, rest now."
Perhaps it was because his body was so warm, but she quickly fell asleep in his arms.
--
Pearl was woken up by a phone call.
As soon as she picked up the phone, she heard Kittie's urgent voice, "Pearl, come to the hospital quickly to see your dad. He fell and got injured!"
"What?" Pearl's drowsiness immediately disappeared. She became wide awake and sat up. "Mom, I'm coming right away!"
She changed her clothes and hurried to the hospital.
As she arrived at the door of the hospital room, she could hear arguing inside.Olivia was nagging, "Evans, I just wanted you to help us a little, you didn't have to hurt yourself. I'm begging you, not for myself, but for your brother. Tom is your only brother, and you'd be devastated if he were in danger."
Kittie was still worrying about Evans' condition, but she heardOlivia gossiping and expressed her dissatisfaction, "Olivia, you can say anything about Evans, but you can't say that he doesn't care about Tom! Over the years, he has always helped Tom, always settling any troubled situations. But you can't just come to him whenever you have problems, expecting him to figure everything out. You should find your solutions too!"
Olivia said, "But I'm at my wit's end now, if I could come up with a solution, I wouldn't have come to talk to Evans and you."
With those words, she started crying.
"Mom, don't cry. We'll find a way," her daughter comforted her.
Kittie hadn't cried yet. The fact thatOlivia cried first, it was something she couldn't stand.
Over the years, their family had often been burdened. WheneverOlivia and Tom faced difficulties, they would come to them for help, but they never showed gratitude. Despite this, Kittie refrained from saying much due to their familial ties.
Kittie had grievances in her heart, but she didn't say them out loud because she knew Evans was too sentimental. They grew up together as siblings, and he couldn't possibly not help Tom.
However, she also recognized the endless nature of this assistance. Once Tom believed that they would help him, he would come to them for help anytime.
Even when Evans owed two million dollars in the past, it was because Tom tricked him into investing and avoided taking responsibility. Essentially, Tom deceived Evans into assuming all the liabilities.
Their family had long held grudges because of this matter.
Kittie had argued with Evans and even came close to divorcing him. In the end, Pearl resolved all the problems.
And now Tom was asking them for help again.
This time, Tom made Evans so angry that he fell and broke his hand.
And as if that wasn't enough, when they arrived at the hospital,Olivia still talked about this matter, completely disregarding Evans lying in the hospital bed.
Kittie asked, "Where is Tom? Why did he send you here?"
"Tom is hiding. If he appears, he will be beaten to death,"Olivia, her eyes red with emotion, explained earnestly. "Tom did all this for the sake of this family, for all of you. He has always felt guilty for making Evans pay back so much money on his behalf, so he wanted to earn money to pay back Evans. But..."
Evans was lying in the hospital bed, still having to listen to her talk about these frustrating things.
He felt weary.
For the sake of his brother Tom, he had put in a lot of energy and effort.
Every time Tom caused trouble, he had to resolve the situation for Tom, which also delayed many things for him.
He had almost been promoted back then, but because of Tom, he lost the opportunity for promotion.
He was too soft-hearted, to the point of hurting Pearl.
This time, Evans was determined not to help Tom anymore. "I've told him countless times not to get involved in these things again, not to gamble everything away, but he simply wouldn't listen. I've been incredibly patient with him. I can't keep intervening to sort out his messes anymore. You let him solve his own problems. If he loses money, he can earn it back, but if he loses his strength of character, he will never have it again."
Evans had always been accommodating to their requests, but this time his response was unexpected.Olivia raised her head and cried, "Evans, are you really going to watch us fall into despair and not help us?"
Evans said, "I am already old. If I were ten years younger, I could still help him, my brother."
He was already old to the point that even a fall would cause such serious injuries. He didn't have the energy to solve those troubles.
Olivia wiped away her tears and couldn't believe his indifference. "Evans, you really don't care about Tom's life anymore. It must be my sister-in-law who made you not want to help Tom. He is your own brother, your only brother!"
