Chapter 694 Stay Out for a Few Days
Desiree's belly was flat as a board. "I put on some weight recently, and I already had a bit of a belly. Plus, with the pregnancy, it wasn't super noticeable, but there was a tiny bump. But now, look, there's nothing."
Pearl was stunned. She could barely get the words out, "The baby is gone?"
For a mother, losing a child was the worst nightmare ever.
She knew how much Desiree had been looking forward to this baby. As a mom herself, she could totally relate.
Right now, words felt so useless. Nothing could fill that hole in a mom's heart.
"Yeah, when the baby was first gone, I was in shock, my mind was blank, and I couldn't make sense of anything. But I'm not dumb. After getting off the operating table, I figured a lot out on my own. His mom always looked down on me, so why would she suddenly be so nice?" Desiree wished she could go back in time and slap her past self.
How could she have hoped for something good from Ember over and over? She wanted a happy ending, but not everyone could have it.
Ember just looked down on her. Pregnant or not, she was never going to be the daughter-in-law Ember wanted.
"And Harold? What's his take on all this?" Pearl asked.
"I don't know. He can think whatever he wants. The baby is gone, and we're done. Even if he has a huge fight with his mom and they never speak again, will that bring my baby back?" Desiree was clear on that.
Besides, a mom and her son could never be that estranged.
She didn't have any proof that Ember hurt her, just a hunch. Even if she had proof, it would just lead to a lawsuit and some money.
But what would she do with that money?
It was better to make a clean break and slowly forget those old feelings.
"Don't dwell on it. You need to take care of yourself. I've heard that kids and moms are matched by fate, and the child will come back to you someday," Pearl gently comforted.
Desiree shook her head, the sadness in her eyes deepening. "I'd rather they didn't. I'm a terrible mom. I've already hurt that child once, they deserve a better family."
"Don't say that. No one wanted this to happen, and no one could have predicted an elder would be so cruel." Pearl was also shocked when she first heard about it.
Ember had killed her own grandchild!
"Let's not talk about it. I don't have any proof, it's just my suspicion. Anyway, Harold and I aren't meant to be." Desiree took a deep breath. Then a thought suddenly popped into her head. "Do you think I could stay with you for a few days?"
After all, they had a big house with plenty of space and rooms. One more person wouldn't make a difference.
"If you're okay with it, I can help with the kids. Emily is adorable," Desiree added.
Pearl hesitated.
It wasn't that she didn't want Desiree to come over. As a friend, she was more than willing to be there for her in her most vulnerable moments. But she was worried about putting her in danger. "Our family has been targeted lately. First, a little girl tried to poison Emily, and today I ran into some thugs on my way home. If you come over now, I'm really scared they'll come after you too."
"I'm not scared." Desiree shook her head. She had her own reasons.
Facing Pearl, she explained, "First, if these people are after you, they can definitely find out about your friends and know we're close. Second, I can bring a few bodyguards with me. If we stick together, we might actually be safer."
She really didn't want to stay at home, with Daryl coming over every day, sucking up to Liam and Tessa. It made her super uncomfortable.
But seeing the genuine smiles on Liam's and Tessa's faces, Desiree couldn't bring herself to kick him out.
She had already hurt them with her stubbornness before. Now that she was back home after the divorce, she didn't want to go against them again. If she did, that would be too ungrateful.
She kept these thoughts to herself. Instead of silently dealing with it alone, it was better to change the environment and avoid it altogether.
"Then come over. I've been home a lot lately. We can chat and pick up some new hobbies. It's better than you being stuck at home," Pearl welcomed her.
After making the arrangements, Desiree hung up, quickly washed up, changed clothes, and packed her suitcase to go downstairs.
Liam and Tessa were chatting on the sofa, their conversation revolving around Desiree and Daryl.
"When will Desiree finally let go of that relationship? Seeing her like this, not eating or sleeping well, I feel so much pain as a mother would." Tessa's eyes were on the TV screen, but her thoughts were with Desiree.
Liam was chain-smoking beside her. "Give her some more time..."
"I'm afraid Harold will deliberately drag out the divorce." Tessa was also furious about this.
They had given Harold a chance. When the two got married, they didn't stop them. But what was the result?
Harold had betrayed their trust and treated Desiree so badly. They didn't know the specifics, but the baby was gone, and Desiree was so haggard, indicating that Harold was a complete jerk.
Liam slammed his fist on the coffee table. "He wouldn't dare! Doesn't he run a company? If he doesn't agree to the divorce, that company won't be able to continue."
Harold's main goal in being with Desiree was to get the Sandvik Family's support. Now, they were eager to sabotage him instead.
A company that hadn't gone public couldn't compete with the Sandvik Family's group. If Liam spread the word, no one would want to work with Harold.
As they were discussing, Desiree walked to the staircase and greeted them, "Mom, Dad, I want to go stay out for a few days to clear my mind. You don't need to worry about me."
