Chapter 489 See You Again in Five Years
"Ms. Harris." A voice snapped Pearl back to reality.
She looked up to see a man in a military uniform at the door.
"Are you looking for me?" she asked.
"Yes, the Eldorians sent a large batch of supplies and requested you to sign for it."
"Okay."
For the past five years, no matter where she was, the Eldorians always sent supplies, but Louis and RavenWing never showed up again. Plus, a substantial amount of money was deposited into her account every month.
The supplies helped the locals and improved the soldiers' meals. Pearl had no reason to refuse, especially since she didn't have tosee Louis and RavenWing.
She patted Christopher's head. "I need to go out for a bit. Be good and stay put."
Christopher nodded.
His silence worried Pearl. If the embassy didn't send someone, she'd contact Jeffery to check on Christopher. It seemed like autism, so he needed a doctor.
Pearl followed the soldier to the supply area. She was about to sign the form when a gentle voice called, "Pearl."
She looked up to see Louis in a white shirt, smiling.
After five years, Louis looked the same. The Eldorians were now under his control and had established diplomatic relations with Tranquiloria. She knew this but never contacted him.
Now that Louis had come personally, Pearl knew he had something to discuss.
"What do you need from me?" she asked first.
After signing, she handed the form to the soldier. "Check the supplies. This is my friend; I need to talk to him. Call me if you need anything."
"Okay, Ms. Harris."
Pearl walked towards Louis. A hint of pain appeared in his eyes. "You look thinner."
Pearl smiled. "Running around all the time, how could I not be?"
"Still not tired of being a war correspondent?"
Pearl could be a war correspondent because of RavenWing and Oscar's protection and because RavenWing had people secretly watching over her.
Louis had been sending supplies for years, hoping to move Pearl. But she never contacted him.
After all these years, he wanted to see her reaction. She remained indifferent.
Pearl softly said, "I love my job. If I could, I'd do it forever."
Being a war correspondent was dangerous and rare. She wanted to enrich herself, help others, and feel closer to Oscar, just like before.
"After all these years as a war correspondent, you should know Kevin isn't dead. I need your help," Louis said, taking a deep breath.
Pearl was silent for a moment. "What do you need?"
If Louis was asking, it had to be something she could help with.
"When Haley took your place, Kevin almost took control of the Eldorians. If you come back with me, Kevin will definitely come after you," Louis explained, his eyes fixed on her.
Pearl stayed calm. Just when Louis thought she wouldn't agree, she spoke hoarsely, "Okay, I'll go back with you."
Back when she and Oscar were with the Eldorians, and when Haley captured her, Louis had protected her in secret. Since he was asking now, she would help him.
"We should leave today," Louis said, clearly pressed for time.
"Can you wait a few days?"
If it were before, Pearl would have left immediately, but now she had Christopher. If she left today, what would happen to him?
Louis sensed something was up. "Why?"
Pearl should be unencumbered now.
"There's a child with me. The embassy asked me to take care of him for a few days," she explained.
Louis finally understood. In the past five years, Pearl had not only been a war correspondent but also a philanthropist, helping many children and elderly people.
"Alright, I'll come to get you in three days."
"Okay," Pearl nodded.
For the next three days, she prepared her reports while Christopher stayed by her side, not crying or fussing, and not speaking. If it weren't for their previous interactions, she would have thought he was mute.
Christopher was very obedient, helping her pour water, water the plants, and hang towels. However, when she took him to the embassy, he seemed very resistant. The embassy even called, "Ms. Harris, we couldn't find any information about him. We should send him to a local orphanage or repatriate him to an orphanage in our country."
Sending such a young child to an orphanage was heartbreaking, especially after three days of bonding. Pearl felt very reluctant, and Christopher's eyes were red and swollen from crying. But she had no other choice.
She held Christopher's hand and slowly explained, "Christopher, I have other things to do. The embassy couldn't find your identity, so you have to go to the orphanage for now. But we will see each other again."
Christopher didn't speak but clung tightly to her hand, looking up at her with hopeful eyes.
Pearl was about to say more when Christopher's face suddenly turned pale, and he began to struggle for breath. The sight of him like this terrified her.
"Christopher! Christopher! What's wrong with you?"
She scooped him up, but his lips were turning blue, and his eyes were unfocused.
With no other choice, she rushed to find a military doctor.
