Chapter 655 Admitting Fault

Desiree braced herself for the slap, but nothing happened.

She opened her eyes to see Liam shaking his head and sighing.

Tessa tried to calm him down, "What's the point of sulking? We need to fix this. It's gotta be Harold's fault! Let's get him over here."

Liam shot Desiree a look, barely keeping his cool. "Stop defending him. He's a grown man; let him deal with his own mess."

Desiree stayed quiet for a moment, then texted Harold to come over.

Harold rushed over from work as soon as he got the message.

He saw Desiree sitting quietly in the living room and was about to go to her when Liam's glare stopped him.

"Let's cut to the chase," Liam said, pointing at Desiree. "We know everything about you two, including your mom's thoughts."

Harold met his gaze. "What my mom said was wrong, and that's not how I feel."

Seeing the determination in Harold's eyes, Liam nodded slightly, though he sighed.

He really did admire Harold, not just because Harold had saved him, but because he saw his potential.

He used to think Harold was just an assistant.

But Harold proved himself, showing he could take care of Desiree and run a big company, which alone showed he was no ordinary guy.

When Liam thought this, his harsh look softened, and he said calmly, "Harold, I do admire you. I even thought you could make Desiree happy. That's why I agreed to your marriage, but now it's not possible."

"Mr. Sandvik..." Harold said urgently.

Liam waved him off. "No need to say more. Since your mom doesn't agree, there's no point in us becoming in-laws. Better to end it now than have endless conflicts later."

Hearing this, Desiree couldn't stay seated. She stood up quickly, but Tessa pushed her back down.

Tessa, usually gentle, showed rare firmness. "Don't interfere with your father. Marriage isn't just about two people. A marriage without the parents' blessings is ultimately not as happy."

Listening to Tessa, Desiree felt her heart breaking.

Cold wind kept pouring in through the broken gap.

She was shivering all over.

She vaguely remembered it was just as cold when she left the Lewis family that day. Harold didn't come after her immediately. If it weren't for Daryl, she wouldn't have known where to go.

Thinking of this, Desiree felt the resolve she had been holding onto suddenly fade, and she looked away, not wanting to see Harold.

But just as she looked away, she saw Harold approaching her.

Tessa stood up in shock. "What are you doing?"

Desiree stared blankly at Harold, the light casting a faint shadow on his thin face.

"I've wronged Desiree, I'm sorry." Harold said slowly.

Tessa said, "It was your mom who said those things. It's not your fault."

"The words were my mom's, but it's on me for not taking care of Desiree, letting scumbags hurt her." Harold continued.

The Sandvik family fell silent.

Harold's actions showed his feelings for Desiree hadn't changed.

By now, Desiree was in tears.

In the end, Liam and Tessa couldn't stand to see her cry anymore and let Harold take her home.

On the way back, Harold was super cautious with her.

Their interactions were more awkward than before, maybe because of some invisible barrier between them.

Desiree remembered what Harold had said earlier, "You mentioned to my parents that someone took advantage. Do you know who it was?"

They all knew someone was manipulating public opinion, but they didn't know who.

Harold paused halfway through taking off his coat, his eyes flickering. "It was Daryl who took you away that day."

Desiree thought he meant the night she went to the Lewis family.

But then she realized he was talking about the cruise.

She felt like she'd been hit by something, nearly stumbling.

Harold reached out to support her, but she was in a daze. "So, it was all Daryl?"

Harold looked at her, already regretting telling her, but he nodded silently.

Seeing Harold admit it, Desiree felt her heart shatter into pieces. "How could he do this to me? I thought we were friends," she murmured helplessly, slowly crouching to the ground.

Seeing her like this, Harold felt even more heartbroken, and his desire to tear Daryl apart grew stronger. "Desiree, don't be like this. Get up."

"Harold." Desiree clung to his hand. "I don't understand. Why would he do that?"

Whether it was the grievances she had suffered these days or the hurt from Daryl's betrayal, her emotions erupted like a flood.

She couldn't stop crying.

Her tears fell on Harold's hand, burning his fingertips.

In the office, he quietly held the devastated Desiree for a long time.

After that, Harold set his sights on Fields Corporation. Any deal they wanted, he would snatch.

His aggressive retaliation shocked everyone, and the employees whispered among themselves.

"Why do you think Mr. Lewis is so fixated on Fields Corporation lately? We don't seem to have any dealings with them."

"Who says we have no dealings? Haven't you seen the trending topics online? It's about Mr. Fields and our Ms. Sandvik having a scandal."

"Exactly, what normal man could tolerate that? If you ask me, his revenge is already mild."

Though they said that, Fields Corporation was not to be trifled with either.

After having several deals snatched by Harold, they were furious, and the two companies ended up in a fierce rivalry.

Desiree, however, was unaware of all this.

Harold, concerned about her emotional state, hadn't let her go to the company these past few days, keeping her at home to rest.

No matter how late he worked, he would come back to be with her.

But tonight, he couldn't make it back.

Harold specifically called to apologize, "I'm sorry, Desiree. I might be late tonight. There's some trouble at the company."
