Chapter 935 Trouble? She Could Handle It, Come What May.
When Jeffery made his suggestion, Lyra was stunned for a moment. She paused, thinking it over carefully, and finally shook her head gently but firmly.
"No, I don't think so."
Now it was Jeffery's turn to be surprised.
"Running away isn't a solution," Lyra said softly, but with a clarity she had never felt before. "I've thought about it. Leaving back then was my mistake. Those people, those problems, can they really do anything to me? Probably not. I was just too sheltered and scared."
A person's upbringing could leave an invisible mark, deeply influencing their character. The Hill family had molded her into someone who avoided conflict and sought peace at all costs.
But now, after everything she had been through, she didn't want to be afraid anymore.
Trouble? She could handle it, come what may.
She shared her thoughts honestly. After she finished, there was still no sound from the other end of the line. Lyra's heart tightened a bit, and she hesitantly asked, "Did I disappoint you?"
"No."
Jeffery's laughter suddenly came through, clearer and more relaxed than before.
"I'm glad you think that way."
His happiness was genuine, carrying a warm sense of relief.
That matter was settled, and Jeffery never mentioned transferring her again. Soon, she finished her exams.
Before the results were even out, Jeffery's email was already in her inbox—a meticulously worded, weighty letter of recommendation.
When Lyra called him, she couldn't help but say, "Isn't this a bit early?"
On the other end, Jeffery's tone was confident and calm. "Not early. You'll need it sooner or later."
He seemed to have more faith in her future than she did.
Lyra was slightly taken aback, a warm feeling rising in her heart. After a brief moment of surprise, she asked about something else. "Have you been really busy these past few days?"
"Why do you ask?"
Lyra was silent for a moment, her voice lowering. "Because you haven't called in a while."
They used to talk at least twice a week. That frequency of contact had become a habit, a comfort that made her feel he was never far away, even when they were apart. So when that familiar ringtone stopped, her world felt a little emptier.
She had hesitated for a long time before making this call.
There were some faint background noises on his end, as if someone was talking to Jeffery. She waited quietly, not wanting to interrupt.
After a moment, his voice came back, with a hint of apology. "Yeah, I've been a bit busy."
"Can you tell me about it?"
"Not yet," he replied.
Lyra's eyebrows shot up. If someone had walked by at that moment, they would have seen the unmistakable look of surprise on her face. But no matter how she tried to probe, Jeffery kept his lips sealed, skillfully steering the conversation away from the original topic.
It wasn't until after they hung up that Lyra realized, with some frustration, that he had once again led her off course.
But it wasn't long before she caught wind of Jeffery's secret.
"Did you hear? Dr. Wright is leaving!" Mia said, sitting across from her with a tray of food, looking all mysterious.
Lyra raised an eyebrow. "Where to?"
Mia whispered, "I heard he's heading to a big city, but no one knows which hospital yet."
Lyra touched her nose. "Oh."
Mia rolled her eyes. "You really need to get your head out of those medical records and pay more attention to the world outside!"
After her scolding, Mia got to the main point. "With Dr. Wright leaving, the hospital director's position would be vacant, meaning a new "big shot" would soon arrive."
Lyra absentmindedly chewed on her pen, mumbling, "Who could it be?"
Unfortunately, even Mia, the hospital's gossip queen, couldn't dig up any information. She patted her chest and declared, "I bet the new person has a serious background! Otherwise, they wouldn't keep it so secret!"
Lyra shook her head, not giving it much thought. To her, a new boss was just a new boss. It couldn't possibly be someone she knew.
The idea was so ridiculous that it made her laugh.
But reality turned out to be more ridiculous than her wildest guess. On the day the new director arrived, Lyra happened to be delivering a document to the director's office.
She knocked lightly on the door.
"Come in."
As she pushed the door open, Lyra froze in place.
The man sitting behind the desk, looking up at her, had the familiar cool eyes she knew so well.
"Jeffery? What are you doing here?!"
In that moment, Lyra's expression must have been comical because she saw Jeffery laugh.
It was the first time he had laughed so openly in front of her. His brows relaxed, and the coldness in his eyes melted away, leaving only pure joy. "Surprised? I wanted to give you a surprise, but judging by your reaction, it seems more like a shock."
Lyra instinctively pressed a hand to her chest, her heart pounding wildly.
More than a shock! It was enough to scare her out of her wits!
"Why did you transfer here?!" After the initial shock, a strong sense of confusion and worry surged in her heart. "Weren't you doing well at Willow Creek? Why so suddenly?"
No matter how good this hospital was, it couldn't compare to the top-tier institution of Willow Creek. This was a demotion, a career suicide! For her? The thought made her chest tighten.
Seeing her more anxious than himself, with her eyes slightly red, Jeffery felt a mix of comfort, pity, and amusement. "This wasn't a sudden decision. I've thought about it for a long time."
"But what about your career?!" Lyra blurted out.
The warmth in Jeffery's eyes deepened. He stood up, walked over to her, and spoke in a low, reassuring voice. "It's okay."
But Lyra was still worried. She wanted to shake his shoulders and drive out whatever demon had possessed him.
Seeing her still anxious, Jeffery finally showed a hint of helplessness. He leaned in slightly, meeting her eyes, and asked, with deep confidence in his voice, "Lyra, do you think I'm that incapable?"
That question instantly calmed all of Lyra's agitation. She stared at him, her heartbeat slowly returning to normal.
Seeing her dazed expression, Jeffery's lips curved up again. "I'm new here. Aren't you, as a 'veteran,' going to treat your new boss?"
Lyra thought for a moment, then looked up and asked, "Where are you staying? How about I come over and cook for you?"
