Chapter 238 Do You Think I Wouldn't Dare?
Pearl's jaw dropped in shock.
Adrian hung up right after he finished talking.
This decision had been brewing for a while; he needed to muster some courage and just go for it.
If he didn't fight for it now, he might never get the chance.
"Adrian, what are you saying?" Pearl couldn't believe he would do something like this.
The baby she was carrying wasn't Adrian's, yet he was ready to step up as the father. She'd never heard of anything like it.
Adrian told her, "Sorry for making this call on my own, but I think it's the only way to make him back off."
"But what about you?" Pearl frowned. "The kid isn't yours, and you're taking on the father role. It's not fair to you!"
Pearl still had her wits about her. Adrian was young, with his whole life ahead of him. What would his future wife think? What would his family think?
She couldn't let Adrian take on this burden and face all the gossip.
Adrian replied, "It's okay. People live to do what they love. I don't care what others think. If I did, how could I live? Don't worry about me. Maybe I'm the one taking advantage of you."
"No, I can't drag you into this," Pearl said, feeling torn. "You might not care, but I'd feel guilty. I can't repay your kindness."
"I'm not asking for repayment." Adrian smiled. "I'm doing this because I want to. There's nothing I can't let go of. You don't know how happy it makes me to have even a small connection with you. Being needed by you is an honor. I'm more than willing."
Pearl felt a deep sense of guilt towards him.
She would never think of asking Adrian for help with any problems, not wanting to owe anyone favors.
She knew Adrian liked her, which made it even more inappropriate for him to get involved. Adrian would surely suffer, and she didn't want that.
Adrian's care for Pearl moved her and made her feel he was reliable and worthy of lifelong trust.
If she weren't married and didn't have a child, she would consider marrying Adrian. After all, it's rare to find someone in this world who is wholeheartedly good to another without expecting anything in return.
Pearl hoped Adrian would be happy.
The key to happiness wass his joy and contentment.
Could she give him happiness?
The answer was no!
Pearl was carrying Oscar's child, which was unfair to Adrian.
She dared not entertain such a notion.
Adrian seemed to sense Pearl's hesitation and continued, "Pearl, everyone has different dreams. Do you know what my biggest wish is? I hope you to be happy and joyful."
Pearl looked at Adrian, struggling to find the right words.
Pearl also wondered if she could make Adrian happy. She couldn't guarantee it, so she dared not speak lightly.
"I thought you were happy marrying Oscar, but you're not. Since he can't make you happy, I think I can. If you loved him and he could make you happy, I wouldn't be so worried. Since he can't, I feel he doesn't deserve you, and it gives me the courage to want to take care of you."
As he spoke, Adrian smiled again. "You don't know. Just talking with you by your side makes me very happy!"
His smile had a hint of sadness.
Pearl had never seen Adrian's heart so clearly.
Adrian's hope was still for Pearl to look at him.
Pearl knew making Adrian happy would be easy; he'd be over the moon if she said yes.
But she couldn't make that promise lightly.
Pearl had to be responsible for both herself and Adrian.
If she couldn't promise him a lifetime, she shouldn't drag him into this. In the end, Adrian would be the one hurt.
"Adrian."
The door suddenly flew open, and Oscar stormed in, his face dark with anger.
"Adrian!" Oscar grabbed him by the collar. "You're so arrogant, daring to say such things!"
Oscar had wanted to hit Adrian for a long time!
Adrian's constant presence around Pearl had infuriated Oscar for quite some time.
But today, Adrian had actually said those words, which gave Oscar a reason to hit him!
Oscar's fist landed squarely on Adrian's face.
"Oscar!" Pearl immediately scolded. "Don't start a fight in the hospital!"
Oscar coldly replied, "No way!"
Adrian took the punch but smiled. "Go ahead, I owe you this. But after you're done, can you give Pearl back to me?"
Seeing Adrian's relaxed smile, Oscar clenched his fist tighter. "Adrian, you have no shame!"
"As long as you give Pearl back to me, what does dignity matter? I'd even give you my life!" Adrian wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, completely unfazed by the beating.
"Well, you asked for it!" Oscar threw another punch, this time more vicious, knocking Adrian to the side.
Pearl's face turned pale, and she shouted, "Stop it, Oscar. Stop!"
Oscar's eyes were bloodshot, and he stared coldly at Adrian. "Are you really that Magee?"
Oscar was most curious about the man in Pearl's heart.
Who was this man named Magee?
Oscar hadn't yet solved the mystery of whether Adrian was Magee.
Pearl had said he wasn't, but she might be lying to protect Adrian.
She had deceived Oscar once; she might deceive him a second time.
Adrian stood up and boldly admitted, "I am Magee!"
Upon hearing this, Oscar completely lost his temper and kicked Adrian in the stomach, not wanting to give him a chance to get up. "Perfect, you're exactly who I want to hit!"
Adrian didn't fight back, collapsing onto a nearby table, sending its contents crashing to the floor.
Seeing Adrian's bruised and pained expression, yet his lack of resistance, Pearl couldn't stand it any longer. She stepped in front of Adrian. "Oscar, if you need to hit someone, hit me instead!"
Oscar's eyes were cold as he looked at Pearl defending Adrian. Her face seemed so unfamiliar, he couldn't see through it. He angrily said, "Do you think I wouldn't dare?"
"Then go ahead." Pearl was ready to take his punch.
"Pearl, don't be stubborn!" Adrian quickly pushed her aside, not wanting her to get hurt.
Pearl looked at Oscar and coldly said, "Oscar, you'd better hit me and end all our ties. It's better than this endless entanglement!"
These words deeply wounded Oscar's pride.
Did it lead to her disgust like this?
Seeing Pearl and Adrian protecting each other, Oscar suddenly felt like an outsider. All the entanglement in Pearl's eyes turned into loathing. He asked again, "When did you two get together?"
Adrian replied, "Wasn't your marriage a transaction from the start? You both agreed to it. Since you each got what you wanted, whatever happens is the other's freedom. Pearl doesn't care how many lovers you have, and you shouldn't care about her affairs."
