Chapter 869 Other Things Are Secondary
As soon as Nathaniel spoke, Quincy and James both gave him a thumbs-up. "You're married and still clueless. You're something else, man."
Oscar patted Nathaniel on the shoulder. "You've got a kid now, no need to be so nervous. Just do your best to treat her well. Besides, didn't your wife get along great with Pearl last time?"
Nathaniel thought about how Saskia had been doing lately. Ever since she started doing what she wanted and stopped overworking herself, she seemed much better.
Quincy said, "I'm heading out of town next month for a conference. Otherwise, I wouldn't be here today."
"I'm leaving the country tomorrow," James quickly added.
So today was a rare chance for them to gather.
Oscar looked at the two of them. "You guys have the nerve to tease Nathaniel. When are you two going to settle down and have kids?"
"Can't have our kids in middle school while yours are still in diapers, right?"
They were all in their thirties, not exactly young anymore. Plus, Oscar had found happiness with Pearl and was leaning more towards a stable life.
James didn't see it that way. "You can't just marry anyone if you haven't found true love, right?"
"Do you think I'm like you and Pearl, falling in love after marriage? Or like Nathaniel, with a whole reunion and misunderstanding plot?" Quincy chimed in.
In short, Quincy had no interest in the kind of marriages Oscar and Nathaniel had. What was so fun about getting married? Every day would revolve around women and kids. Wasn't focusing on your career more appealing? Besides, marriage wasn't the only path in life.
James gave Quincy a thumbs-up. "I agree. Now that they're married, they want to turn us into househusbands too."
"What, are they trying to make us all into a group of card-playing buddies?" James didn't hide his disdain for Oscar and Nathaniel's current situation.
"So you two are committed to being single forever?" Nathaniel said, his tone light but pointed. Oscar's gaze followed.
Feeling Oscar's eyes on them, James and Quincy got goosebumps. Quincy immediately raised his voice. "Nathaniel, what nonsense are you spouting!"
James joined in. "We've known each other for years. You know what kind of people we are. How could you even think that about us!"
Besides, even if they did have issues, they wouldn't involve friends.
Nathaniel's voice was calm. "Who knows?"
Quincy immediately protested. "This is revenge!"
"Nathaniel, I didn't think you were so petty," James added.
Nathaniel glanced at them and chuckled. "You two work so well together. Why not just get together? You know each other well, so there wouldn't be many conflicts."
"Get lost."
Quincy was annoyed. Despite his busy work schedule, his sexual orientation was perfectly normal.
Nathaniel wasn't fazed. Among friends, this kind of teasing was completely normal.
They ended up drinking, as usual, and hired a driver to take them all home.
Nathaniel hadn't drunk much, but as soon as Saskia got close, she could smell the strong scent of alcohol on him. She was probably just very sensitive to smells.
"Why'd you drink so much?"
Nathaniel had been socializing more than usual lately. "I was with Oscar and the guys today. Saskia, tomorrow I'm taking you to a high-society event. If there's anything you want, just let me know."
High-society events didn't matter to Saskia. What she cared about was being by Nathaniel's side.
Nathaniel, however, was determined to introduce her to everyone and use all his connections to help her thrive.
But Saskia just wanted a peaceful life.
"The friends you've introduced me to and everything you've given me are more than enough. I don't care about those events. Can I skip it?"
Saskia wanted to stay with Benjamin and take him to see Christopher. The two kids got along well.
"If you don't want to go, I'll respect your decision. But it wouldn't look good if you didn't. There will be more events to handle in the future."
"Alright. Go take a shower, and I'll get you some vitamin C."
Since Nathaniel had made up his mind, Saskia didn't argue. The most important thing now was to let Nathaniel rest.
Nathaniel held Saskia close. "I want you to have another child, but it's painful. And I don't want people to think I'm copying Oscar. Let's not rush. Enjoy life first, and we'll see later."
Saskia had been through a lot. It was important to live well first. Everything else would come in time.
"Okay, I'll do whatever you say."
She loved Nathaniel and was willing to have his children. Otherwise, she wouldn't have insisted on having this child even after they separated.
They fell asleep in each other's arms, the closest they could be.
The next day, Nathaniel took Saskia to a concert. He had been showing her the world lately, and with Pearl's help, she was now comfortable in these social settings.
But she didn't expect to be targeted while Nathaniel was talking to someone else.
"Can't believe Nathaniel chose you, a country bumpkin, over Amy!"
Saskia, now well-groomed and dressed in designer clothes, wasn't having it.
"Amy got what she deserved. Don't you think about her fate? Do you want to end up like her?"
Nathaniel was nearby. Saskia had never been one to back down, and she didn't need Nathaniel to handle this.
The woman in front of her was shocked by Saskia's boldness. Being favored made her fearless.
"You're just relying on Nathaniel's affection. Without him, you're nothing!"
Nathaniel must have been brainwashed by Saskia. He chose her, a woman from a humble background, over the Waverly family's heiress, who could have been a great asset.
Nathaniel was trying to bring Saskia into high society, but lower-class people would always be lower-class.
Saskia smiled. "I may be nothing to you, but as long as Nathaniel loves me, that's all that matters. If he wants to give me status, everything else is secondary."
