Chapter 313 Cut
Jeffery flinched, clearly not wanting her to touch him.
Pearl got more suspicious. "Why are you still bleeding?"
His injury had been there a while. Even if it hadn't fully healed, it shouldn't still be bleeding—unless it was new.
Jeffery tightened his sleeve, but it didn't help.
"I cut myself cooking. It's no big deal," he said.
Pearl wasn't buying it. "You've been using a scalpel for years. How could you mess up like that? This doesn't look like a cooking injury. What really happened?"
Jeffery stayed silent.
Pearl took his hand and found the bandaged wound on his wrist.
The bandage was sloppy, probably because he did it one-handed.
"I hurt myself," Jeffery said softly. "You've seen worse. This is nothing."
He wanted to drop it, but Pearl wasn't convinced. "Did you hurt yourself on purpose?"
Jeffery was stunned and pulled his hand back. "Why do you ask?"
"If it was an accident, why your wrist? The bandage is neat, the cut is clean. It looks self-inflicted and recent. As a doctor, you wouldn't bandage it so poorly unless you did it one-handed and in a hurry, which is why it's still bleeding."
Pearl's logic left Jeffery speechless.
He underestimated her sharpness.
When he found Pearl fainted, he knew only his blood could help her.
He didn't hesitate to cut his wrist.
In his rush to care for her, he quickly bandaged it.
Pearl was even more puzzled. "Why did you cut yourself?"
Jeffery was cornered. "My blood helps you recover faster."
He wasn't lying.
His blood wasn't something one could buy.
Pearl was shocked. "Is that even possible?"
Jeffery didn't hide his wound anymore. "I'm an experimental subject. My blood has medicinal properties."
Pearl was confused. It sounded too sci-fi. 'Are there really experimental subjects in real world? Is that something made up in a novel?'
She searched online and found out about them. They underwent experiments and body modifications from a young age.
Becoming an experimental subject was risky and cruel.
The survival rate was low and living like that was harsh.
'Who would create experimental subjects? It would cost a lot of time, efforts and lives! It's inhumane. No lab would use humans for experiments. It's too dark. Those labs that made Jeffery just wanted to make money!' Pearl was furious after reading about it. Treating people like lab rats violated human rights.
She looked at Jeffery, who seemed calm.
To him, this was normal.
Pearl realized he came from a shady place.
As he said, they were in the abyss, hidden from the light.
Still, Pearl was shocked. She couldn't imagine why they lived so differently.
"Why give me your blood?" Pearl was horrified. "I would've woken up. You didn't need to cut your wrist. It's harmful. I don't need that."
Jeffery smiled, finding it easy. "It's okay. A little blood won't kill me."
"No more next time!" Pearl insisted. "You deserve respect. You're not an animal. You don't need to sacrifice yourself. You're free. Don't bind yourself."
She wanted him to live a normal life, instead of what he was used to.
Jeffery understood she was worried. "I know. Don't worry about me."
"Remember, we're friends. If you need help, I'll be there," Pearl said. "By the way, what about Barbara? I haven't seen her. How is she?"
"You care about her a lot."
"She's pitiful."
Even though Pearl didn't remember, Barbara not killing her meant there was a connection.
Pearl wanted to help them leave that organization.
Jeffery didn't agree. Without that injection, Pearl wouldn't have been poisoned.
But he kept quiet.
Pearl wanted to walk in the garden.
She had dismissed all the servants because she couldn't afford them.
She didn't need that many people.
The house was still hers but felt emptier. The garden flowers and plants had withered.
She started tidying up and bought new plants.
She liked roses and got some seedlings.
Red, white, pink—she planted all kinds.
She used these activities to distract herself.
After several days, Pearl finally got the villa in order.
With some free time, she watched TV and caught up on news.
She also had many missed calls.
From Janetta, Emma, and former colleagues.
Just as she hesitated to call back, Janetta called. "What's going on with you and Oscar? Weren't you two back together? How did you get divorced? Why is he clarifying things for Haley? This doesn't make sense. He fought so hard for you before. How is he with Haley now? Pearl, what's going on?"
Janetta was furious.
She hadn't contacted Pearl for a few days and felt like the world had changed.
Pearl had been at home, avoiding her phone and TV.
Her divorce from Oscar was bound to make headlines.
By avoiding the news, she spared herself the trouble.
Hearing Janetta's voice, Pearl forced a bitter smile. "We got divorced."
