Chapter 100 Caring for Her
Nora's heart skipped a beat as she nearly got thrown off the horse's back.
Luckily, her quick reflexes allowed her to grab the reins tightly and steady herself just in time.
She tugged at the reins desperately, trying to make the horse stop, but it continued its wild dash forward.
"Stop! Please stop!"
What was going on?
Why wouldn't the horse obey?
"Nora!"
Aaron watched in horror as the horse bolted, his face draining of color in an instant.
Had the horse gone mad all of a sudden?
"Mr. Gordon, Nora is quite something, isn't she? She is riding so fast, though she's a beginner," Gayle said nonchalantly as he rode up beside Aaron, purposely provoking him.
Aaron's face was stoic as he gripped his wheelchair, mustering all his willpower to stand up.
Then, he yanked Gayle off his horse and took his place in one fluid motion.
Gayle hit the ground with a thud. He stared at Aaron in complete astonishment as Aaron rose out of his wheelchair.
"Mr. Gordon, you—you can stand?"
In the face of dire emergencies, people can summon extraordinary strength.
Seeing Nora in danger, Aaron miraculously found his feet.
His handsome face set in a grim expression, Aaron cracked the whip against the horse's flank forcefully. With a cry, the horse charged forward.
At that moment, his mind held one sole thought—Nora must not get hurt!
Ahead, Nora clung onto the galloping horse, the approaching wall sending chills down her spine.
She yanked at the reins with all her might, crying out incessantly, "Stop, please stop!"
If it didn't stop soon, they would crash into the wall!
"Nora, hold on to the reins!"
Aaron's shout echoed from behind her.
Swallowing hard, Nora shouted back, "I am holding them, but this horse won't listen! Aaron, do you even know how to teach riding?"
The breeze blew through her hair, and her slight frame swayed precariously from side to side.
Nora was on the verge of tears, internally cursing herself for trusting Aaron.
She should have asked a professional horse trainer!
"Nora, grip the reins tightly, don't let go!"
His voice grew closer. With a side glance, Nora saw Aaron catching up.
How was he on a horse?
His legs weren't supposed to withstand such strain!
The thought flashed through her mind, but it was quickly dismissed as the wall loomed ahead—the horse was about to collide with it, with her on its back.
"Nora, give me your hand, now!"
Aaron was now beside her, controlling his own horse while reaching out to her.
Nora gulped, indecision gripping her heart.
Aaron's face was a study in stoicism, his voice a steady baritone. "Trust me, you're going to be just fine."
She would be just fine.
Nora gazed at the fence so near, closed her eyes, and swiftly reached out her hand to Aaron.
"Come on!"
She heard the man's low growl, and in an instant, she was pulled with such force that it took her breath away.
The distressed neighing of a horse colliding with a wall pierced the air.
Nora inhaled his familiar scent and opened her eyes to right herself, only to be held down firmly.
"Don't look."
His heart was pounding fast, but the warmth of his body gradually steadied her frantic thoughts.
She kept her eyes shut and clung to his waist, letting out a long sigh of relief.
That was close!
Thank goodness he saved her!
Aaron, holding Nora, sat atop the horse, urging it to walk gently.
His heart only began to slow when he felt her soft, fragrant body in his arms.
"Are you okay?"
His voice was a bit hoarse. Nora shifted slightly and lifted her eyes to meet his.
His gaze was deep, tinged with worry and concern.
"I'm fine," Nora assured him.
Aaron looked down at her, his expression softening as he noticed her face had returned to normal calmness. He let out a silent sigh of relief and reached to tidy her windblown hair.
His eyes and touch were tender, causing ripples to spread across the calm lake of her heart once again.
She quickly cast her eyes downward, avoiding direct eye contact.
At that moment, the Smiths and a few others, including Gayle, hurried over.
"Mr. Gordon, Nora, are you both alright?" asked Mr. Smith with genuine concern.
"We're fine."
Aaron let out a breath and brought the horse to a halt.
"Mr. Gordon, luckily you got there in time to save Nora. So, your leg's okay now?" queried Gayle, looking at Aaron.
At those words, Aaron's brow furrowed.
In the heat of the moment, he hadn't noticed, but now that things had calmed down, he realized the muscles in his leg were throbbing painfully.
Nora, too, caught on, and her expression changed as she noticed Aaron's pallor.
"Who let you ride a horse? Do you want to lose your leg?"
The recent danger had been very real for Aaron.
One misstep and he could've been crippled for life!
Nora quickly dismounted and then reached out to help Aaron off the horse.
Despite the scolding, Aaron cracked a smile.
"With you here, my legs will be just fine."
"Are you smiling? Sit down, now."
Nora shot him a stern look and, seeing someone bring a wheelchair, gently helped him into it.
Then, turning to the Smiths, she said, "Sorry, I need to take him back for a check-up."
The Smiths nodded repeatedly. "Of course, go ahead."
Watching the two leave the paddock, Smith turned to Gayle. "Mr. Gayle, why did that horse suddenly bolt?"
A glint flashed in Gayle's eyes as he gestured to a horse trainer, "Did you checked the horses just now? Tell me, what happened?"
The trainer quickly replied, "The mare went into heat unexpectedly."
"How did you let that happen? Why did you keep a mare close to her heat cycle in the stalls? If something had happened just now, it would've been on you," Gayle scolded.
With his head hung low, the trainer didn't dare make a sound.
Gayle continued sharply, "What are you waiting for? Check the other horses, especially Mr. Smith and his wife's mounts. If anything happens to them, you'll be behind bars!"
"I’ll go right away." The trainer hurried to inspect the Smiths' horses.
Gayle repeatedly expressed his apologies to the Smiths, but his eyes were shrewd and calculating.
It was a close call; Nora almost had an accident!
What a pity!
Nora returned to the suite with Aaron and checked his legs carefully. Thankfully, it was just a muscular strain and nothing serious.
"Get on the bed."
She was going to massage his strained leg.
Aaron didn't speak; he just sat down on the bed with his lean shoulders in her gentle hold.
Nora removed his pants and took out a bottle of herbal ointment, starting to knead his leg.
Aaron's leg hurt sharply, but watching Nora's focused expression brought back memories of a previous visit to her room upstairs at her house.
It was strikingly similar.
A small smirk curled on Aaron's lips, and he chuckled.
Nora heard his laughter and glanced up at him.
"Are you laughing? You shouldn't have ridden after me on your own at the paddock just now; you should've let the trainer take over."
Her tone was scolding yet tinged with tenderness.
Aaron raised an eyebrow. "Are you worrying about me?"
It was a shift from their last interaction at her place.
"Of course, you're my boss now," Nora retorted.
Aaron's smile was sudden. "And since I'm your boss, I have even less reason to watch you get into trouble and not do anything about it. A boss who can't protect his lady isn't fit to be a boss."
