Chapter 286 The Pursuit Begins
"Who might this be?" Gary halted in his tracks before Nora, his question directed at Evella.
Evella quickly responded, "This is Dr. Nora Smith, the one who saved your life yesterday, brother."
"Hello," Nora acknowledged with a nod.
Gary studied Nora intently. "Dr. Smith, my sister informed me that the doctor who saved my life was a radiant beauty, and she wasn't exaggerating. I'm Gary, and I owe you my gratitude for saving my life last night."
As he spoke, he revealed a bouquet of roses from behind his back, presenting them to Nora. "These flowers are for a beautiful lady, for you."
Nora was taken aback; she hadn't anticipated this gesture, especially not red roses.
Red roses were not just any ordinary flowers; they were traditionally offered to someone you harbored feelings for.
Could it be that he was merely being candid and hadn't considered the implications?
Should she accept them or decline?
While she was wrestling with this dilemma, a woman's voice echoed from a nearby distance.
"Gary, who are you presenting flowers to?"
Nora spun around to see a young woman in high heels storming towards them, her face etched with anger.
Upon hearing her voice, Gary's smile evaporated.
His brow furrowed slightly as he watched the irate woman approach.
"Luna Moore, it's not your concern who I offer flowers to."
Ignoring her protest, he firmly placed the bouquet into Nora's hands.
Luna Moore was incensed. She snatched the flowers from Nora's grasp, flung them onto the ground, and proceeded to trample them mercilessly, all the while shouting, "How dare you! How dare you!"
Gary's expression hardened with anger as he retorted, "Are you ill, Luna Moore? Can't you tone down your diva antics?"
Luna Moore was petite, barely over five-foot-three.
Next to Gary, who towered at almost six-foot-three, she appeared significantly shorter.
The height difference naturally made her seem less intimidating.
However, determined not to be overshadowed, she craned her neck and stood on her tiptoes, challenging him, “What’s your issue, can’t tolerate me? Didn’t you once claim you’d love me regardless of what I became?”
Gary choked, responding with irritation, "Luna Moore, will you ever let it go? Who takes the ramblings of a six-year-old seriously?"
Luna scoffed, "Well, I took it seriously. You're not allowed to fancy anyone else, only me."
"I'm no masochist, I certainly don't want to fancy a madwoman like you."
"Hmph, you stole my first kiss; how can you not take responsibility for that?"
"Me, I was what, six? I didn’t know any better. You always matured too early, didn’t you?"
...
As the two continued their heated exchange, Nora blinked and discreetly moved to sit next to Evella, who was also observing the spectacle with amusement.
She didn't want to be an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.
"What's the story between your brother and her?" Nora whispered.
"They've been friends since childhood, and Luna Moore has been pursuing my brother for a long time," Evella explained.
Nora nodded in understanding.
A classic case of unrequited love.
Watching the bickering pair, she thought they made a good-looking couple, at least physically.
But the girl's temperament was a bit...
"Hey, who on earth are you? What's your major, and when did you start seducing my boyfriend?"
Luna had finally shifted her attention to Nora.
Nora quickly responded, "Ms. Moore, you've misunderstood, I'm not..."
"Luna Moore, what does it matter to you who she is? Can you just stop tailing me like a bad odor all day? Leave now!"
Gary abruptly seized Luna and began to drag her towards the exit.
"I'm not going anywhere! I will find out who this seductress is!" Luna retorted, violently shaking off his grip.
"You..."
Gary's face turned an unhealthy shade of pale; his body, still in recovery, suddenly felt weak.
He clutched his chest in pain and stumbled backward.
Luna, taken aback, rushed forward to support him.
"What ails you, Gary?" The words hung in the air, laced with concern. "I heard you collapsed yesterday; you mustn't frighten me so!"
Nora's features subtly shifted as she heard the news. Swiftly, she rose from her seat, crossing the room to where Gary sat. She reached out, her fingers seeking his pulse.
Luna Moore's voice cut through the room like a knife. "What do you think you're doing? Don't lay a finger on him!"
Evella quickly interjected, her voice laced with urgency. "Ms. Moore, Nora is a doctor. She saved my older brother just yesterday."
Luna Moore seemed taken aback, her expression morphing into a mix of surprise and embarrassment. "A doctor? Why wasn't this mentioned before?"
Nora remained silent, her mind too occupied to offer an explanation. Instead, she focused on the task at hand, her fingers pressing lightly against Gary's wrist, feeling for the steady rhythm of his pulse.
Luna Moore watched the scene unfold, anxiety etched into her features. "How is he? Is everything alright?"
Nora withdrew her hand once she had finished her examination. "He's fine. The scare was simply a result of overexertion. He needs to rest for a few days and avoid strenuous activities."
A wave of relief washed over Gary, his complexion visibly relaxing. He offered Nora a weak smile. "Thank you, Dr. Smith." His voice was soft, a testament to his weakened state.
Luna Moore's discomfort returned, her eyes narrowing as she watched the exchange. "Why are you so gentle with her, Gary?"
Gary pulled away from Luna Moore's supportive grasp, his voice ringing out in the room. "Because I find her intriguing."
Nora was taken aback, the world around her seeming to freeze in place. She furrowed her brow, her voice steady despite her surprise. "Mr. Remington, I would appreciate it if you refrained from making such jokes."
Gary's response was serious, his gaze unwavering. "I assure you, Dr. Smith, I am not joking. From the moment I laid eyes on you, I was captivated. Your gentleness, intelligence, and independence are qualities I admire in a woman."
His words hung in the air, a silent challenge to Luna Moore. Her face cycled through a range of emotions, her gaze fixed on Gary.
Nora was at a loss for words. "I'm sorry, but I'm not interested in you. I'm already in a relationship."
Gary's response was smooth, his voice steady. "That doesn't deter me. I'm willing to compete for your affections."
Nora was left speechless. "Mr. Remington, I'm a divorcee with three children..."
Gary's voice was calm, his gaze steady. "I'm aware. Your sister informed me. But that doesn't change my feelings for you."
Nora was at a loss. Who was this man? Professing his feelings after a single meeting? Was he truly that smitten?
In a surprising twist, Nora blurted out, "If there's something about me you like, I can change it!"
Gary paused, a laugh escaping his lips. "Dr. Smith, you have quite the sense of humor!"
Nora was at her wits' end. The glares from Luna Moore felt like they could pierce her very soul. Luna Moore was seething, her voice shaking as she questioned Gary. "Do you truly have feelings for her?"
Gary's response was a simple nod. "Yes."
"Despite everything?"
"Despite everything."
Luna Moore's eyes filled with tears. In a fit of rage, she grabbed a bowl of soup from the table and hurled it at Gary. "I despise you, Gary!"
With that, she fled the room, her sobs echoing behind her.
Gary, now drenched in soup, gritted his teeth as he called out Luna Moore's name, his voice filled with anger. He brushed the soup off his clothes, his frustration evident. "That hotheaded woman, I can't deal with her. I must have been out of my mind to have feelings for her!"
Evella handed him a few tissues, her voice soft. "Big brother, you should change your clothes before you catch a cold."
"Alright."
Gary stood, his gaze meeting Nora's. "Dr. Smith, I meant what I said." With that, he left the room.
Nora could only shake her head in disbelief. Once Gary had left, she turned to Evella, her expression helpless.
Evella offered a dry laugh, her gaze sympathetic. "I'm sorry, Nora. I had no idea my brother was going to confess his feelings for you."
