Chapter 151 Reveling in Misfortune
With a steady hand, Sunny had already inserted two needles into Aaron's leg. Aaron's brow remained creased in discomfort. By the time the fourth needle was inserted, he was in considerable pain.
"Why is this so painful? Nora, come and see if she's doing it correctly?" he demanded.
Nora had been observing from a nearby vantage point. Sunny's acupoints were accurate, but her technique was different from Nora's. It was a standard practice, and the needle points were indeed sensitive, causing patients to feel pain.
Sweat glistened on Sunny's forehead as Nora approached. "Did I do something wrong?" she asked, uncertainty gnawing at her despite having practiced on a model for this acupuncture session. She wondered if Aaron's pain was due to a mistake she had made.
"No, you didn't do anything wrong," Nora replied evenly.
Sunny felt a wave of relief wash over her at Nora's affirmation. Aaron's frown deepened. "Are you sure? Then why does it hurt so much?"
"Sunny's technique is different. Mr. Gordon, you'll just have to endure it," Nora stated.
Aaron eyed her skeptically, detecting a hint of satisfaction in her eyes. "Mr. Gordon, I'll continue with the needles then," Sunny said, exhaling quietly as she finished applying all the needles.
The pain was so intense that Aaron wanted to rip out the needles. Nora, having drawn her conclusions, had no desire to stay any longer. "Mr. Gordon, it seems you won't be needing my services moving forward, so I'll be leaving now," she said.
For her, this was a welcome development. If Sunny took over Aaron's treatments, Nora could distance herself from Aaron more quickly. Aaron's expression darkened. "Wait, I didn't say I wanted to switch," he protested.
He had agreed to let Sunny try her hand at acupuncture only to see what Nora was really up to. Rumors of academic fraud were circling her. Perhaps she was scrutinizing Sunny's technique. And now, with Sunny's treatment complete, she just walks away? Without a word of defense?
"Aaron, isn't Sunny doing a great job? Maybe you should let her take care of your treatment from now on," Mary suggested hastily as Aaron refused to change his therapist.
Aaron's handsome face turned grim. "Mom, who is the one needing the treatment here? Sunny's technique just doesn't compare to Nora's. Didn't you see me breaking out into a cold sweat from the pain?"
Mary was taken aback, her eyes flickering with distress as she watched Nora wipe Aaron's brow. But then she quickly reconsidered, saying, "Aaron, don't jump to conclusions. If you're feeling pain, doesn't that mean Sunny's method is effective?"
Nora couldn't help but laugh at that statement.
'It's like getting an IV at the hospital. An experienced nurse can do it without causing pain, while a newcomer might not only hurt you but also leave a bump. It's all about skill level,' she thought, yet she didn't bother to explain. Arguing when you're already out of favor feels like making excuses.
"Goodbye, Mr. Gordon," Nora bid farewell and turned to leave.
"Hold it right there," Aaron called after her, "Nora, don't forget you haven't finished your treatment task. I'm still your employer."
Nora paused, tapping away on her smartphone. "Mr. Gordon, I charged you eight million dollars upfront for your treatment. I'll refund the remaining two million – we're even now."
‘She's so eager to cut ties with me! Heartless woman!’ Aaron mused as he watched Nora stride away, his lips pressed into a thin, sharp line.
"Have a good one, Nora. No need for us to walk you out," Suzy gloated internally, having successfully sent Nora packing. She then turned to Aaron, her voice soft, "Aaron, just listen to Mary and let Sunny treat you. I'm sure your leg will be back to normal in no time."
Aaron's expression was stone-cold and after a long pause, he said, "You can all leave now." His voice was devoid of warmth, and the air seemed to turn frosty.
Mary, seeing her goal accomplished, didn't wish to linger. "Alright, Aaron, I'm heading back now. Sunny, Aaron's leg is in your hands."
"Aaron will cool off eventually. This is just a momentary upset."
"Don't worry, Mrs. Gordon, I will do my utmost to restore Mr. Gordon's leg to its full strength soon," Sunny replied cheerfully, her face beaming with smiles.
Finally, the room emptied and the silence settled. Sunny, looking at the man's chiseled features, softly offered, "Mr. Gordon, we've got ten minutes left. How about I give you a head massage?"
As she spoke, her hands reached toward Aaron's temples. Aaron's piercing eyes swept over her, chilling and stark. Sunny's hand instantly froze, and she pulled back with an awkward smile.
"Didn't you decide to keep her around? Why won't you let her touch you?"
"Sunny, you have to learn contentment. Don't be greedy. The effort you put in that night was compensated. What more do you expect from me?" Aaron's gaze was icy and sharp, catching Sunny off guard.
She quickly replied, "Mr. Gordon, I am content. I don't expect anything more."
Aaron fixed his stare on her. "Who asked you to come and treat me?"
"It was Miss Hamilton who sent me," Sunny murmured, casting her eyes downward.
Aaron narrowed his eyes. "How did she come to you?"
Bella's eyes danced as she spoke a partial truth. "Well, my agent knew I had some background in healthcare, so they wanted to craft an intellectual image for me. I used my healthcare insights to pen an article about acupuncture and shared it on Facebook. Miss Hamilton saw it and said Mrs. Gordon wanted someone other than Nora to attend to your treatment."
This information gave Aaron pause for thought. "Show me the article you published."
"Sure." Sunny promptly pulled out her phone, located the article, and handed it to Aaron.
Aaron skimmed through the text with a tight-lipped focus. "You really wrote this?"
Though he was not versed in medical jargon, his gut told him Nora wouldn't fabricate her expertise. But Sunny, who had only six months at a medical school, could she truly have penned an article that earned the praise of so many seasoned medical professionals?
"Yes, I wrote it," Sunny said, avoiding eye contact with Aaron and struggling to maintain her composure.
Aaron's mouth was a thin line, as if he wished to say something more. But the pain in his leg was making him irritable. He took a deep breath, set the matter aside for the moment, and grabbed his tablet to attend to some business matters.
Finally, the treatment was done. Only after Sunny had removed all the needles did Aaron start to feel revitalized. Drenched in sweat, the sticky discomfort soured his mood.
"Mr. Gordon, a massage would be great for relaxation after the acupuncture session. I can start now if you'd like," Sunny offered gently, crouching down beside him.
