Chapter 978 You Were Jealous
Gabriella snorted, "I told you to come, and you did. That desperate?"
Johnnie stared at her. "Only a fool passes up a good deal."
Gabriella's face hardened. "Calling me cheap?"
Johnnie stayed calm. "You started it."
Gabriella's voice rose. "You called me promiscuous first!"
Johnnie shot back, "You approached me first!"
Gabriella glared, speechless. She couldn't out-argue him.
"Move!"
Frustrated, she resorted to being unreasonable. That was her privilege!
"Don't need me to serve you anymore?" Johnnie placed the egg on the plate.
"Step aside, no breakfast for you!" Gabriella snapped.
Johnnie looked at her for a moment, then stepped aside without a word.
Gabriella, even more annoyed by his calm, glared at him. She picked up the egg he peeled, dipped it in seasoning, and took a bite.
"Delicious."
The aroma filled the air. Johnnie's Adam's apple moved involuntarily. He should've eaten before dealing with her. Now, he could only watch the breakfast he bought but couldn't eat.
Just then, Johnnie's phone rang. It was Aaron.
"Mr. Gordon."
"Are you with Gabriella?"
Johnnie glanced at Gabriella, who was eating slowly. "Yes."
"Need anything?"
"No, just checking in," Aaron said.
"I'm fine."
Feeling cared for, Johnnie felt warm inside.
"Good. Hand over your tasks to Zoey Young."
Johnnie tensed. "Replacing me?"
Aaron laughed. "No, your position is secure unless you don't want it."
Johnnie relaxed and smiled. "I do."
He wanted this job forever.
"Alright, call if you need anything."
"Okay."
Gabriella listened but only caught bits and pieces. Seeing Johnnie's smile, she knew Aaron had him wrapped around his finger.
Gabriella sneered. "Aaron's got you under his thumb already? He could be a cult leader!"
Johnnie put away his phone and glanced at her. "Jealous?"
Gabriella almost choked on her egg. She quickly sipped some milk and glared at him.
"Jealous of what? You hallucinating from hunger?"
Johnnie didn't tease her further. "I need to make a call and hand over some tasks."
"I don't allow it! Why not here?" Gabriella shouted.
Johnnie ignored her and walked out. He really was a disobedient servant.
Gabriella sipped her milk, then discarded it with disdain. She was tired of it.
Her phone rang. It was Yannick.
She straightened up and answered. "Dad."
"Still in Youston?"
"Yeah."
"When are you coming back to Hchilia?"
Gabriella hesitated. She didn't want to go back yet. "Dad, my work here isn't done. I can't return right now."
"Still on the Gordon Group project? Sweetie, we're just a third party; no need to stick around."
"It's not just work. Chrisland is more interesting than Hchilia."
"True, Chrisland does feel more familiar to us."
Yannick paused. "But Gabriella, you're not getting any younger. Since Miguel's interested, why not come back and settle the marriage?"
Gabriella gripped the phone tighter. "Dad, I don't like Miguel. I don't want to marry him."
Yannick was surprised. "You don't like Miguel? But Rafael sent gifts, showing Miguel's interest. Marrying into the Royal family would be a great honor for us!"
Gabriella took a deep breath. "Dad, the Royal family is full of infighting. No one knows who will win. I don't want to get involved too early. It could be a disaster, not an honor."
Yannick laughed. "You're overthinking. King Tomas will pass the throne to his eldest son. Rafael and Miguel are full brothers and get along well. Marrying Miguel will bring you happiness, not suffering."
To outsiders, maybe. But she knew Mateo wasn't simple. Rafael had a fake confidential document, which could spell disaster. She couldn't explain this to Yannick yet.
"Alright, Dad, I want to stay here a bit longer. We'll talk about my marriage when I return."
Yannick didn't push. "Alright, just be careful."
"Okay."
After hanging up, Gabriella stared at her phone, lost in thought. She didn't know Rafael's plans with the document, but if things went south, she'd be in trouble. She gave Rafael that document. He'd drag her down with him. Should she find a savior?
The door opened, and Johnnie walked in. Gabriella's eyes flickered. Johnnie was her last hope. She had to rely on Aaron's side. If things went bad, she could seek Aaron's protection.
"Finished eating? I'll clean up," Johnnie said, heading to the table.
Gabriella's eyes flickered. "There's still a lot left. Wasting food is shameful."
Johnnie glanced at her. "So..."
"So I want you to finish the rest," Gabriella said.
Johnnie raised an eyebrow. "Weren't you going to let me go hungry?"
Gabriella forced a smile. "Can't I change my mind? I'm going shopping later. I don't want a hungry man needing my care."
Johnnie was surprised but used to her changes. "You're going out later?"
"Yeah."
Gabriella said, "You didn't think I'd just stay in the room all day, eating and sleeping like an idiot, did you?"
