Chapter 67 Because of Nora
Aaron checked his phone; it was a call from Suzy.
"Hello, Suzy?"
"Aaron, I'm outside Nora's residence. Can you have Mr. Wilson open the door?"
Why was Suzy back here?
Aaron frowned slightly, ended the call, and told Noe to let her in.
Suzy showed up in a sleek black dress, her chestnut curls gathered to one side, as beautiful as ever.
And she wasn't alone – there was a plump lady with her.
"Aaron."
Aaron's expression was cool, "What's up?"
"I heard from my brother that Nora's working, and I was worried you'd be here alone, so I brought Ember," Suzy said, smiling as she glanced at Ember standing behind her, "She's been working as a housekeeper for my brother. She's very skilled."
Ember approached Aaron respectfully, "Hello, Mr. Gordon."
Aaron glanced at her briefly and replied dismissively, "No need, I might not be chilling here during the day."
Aaron was already re-engaging with his work commitments.
He might not stay here during the day.
"What about nights? After a long day, Nora can't be expected to come home and cook for you. I figured an extra pair of hands could ease her load."
Suzy was thoughtful and understanding.
Aaron considered for a moment, softening his expression, "Suzy, I appreciate your concern."
Her smile grew warmer, "Of course. Let's have Ember come over to cook in the evenings."
"Alright," Aaron agreed.
Suzy looked at him with a gentle tone. "Aaron, got any plans today? You're still on the mend. If you're going to work, I should tag along to make sure you don't push it."
She wanted to accompany him to work.
Aaron thought of his mom's words, then spoke up.
"Suzy, you don't have to take time off for me. If you're free, maybe find a good man to vibe with. In my heart, you're like a sister to me."
He hoped she'd catch his drift.
He only saw her as a sister!
No romantic vibes.
Suzy's complexion suddenly changed.
"A sister? Aaron, you know our parents always had plans to bring us together."
"Okay, Suzy, I got a client meeting soon. Noe, let's go."
Aaron touched on the subject briefly; he didn't want to dwell on matters of the heart.
Noe walked over, pushing the wheelchair out.
Suzy stood still, watching them leave, with a darkening expression.
She had managed to keep her composure, pretending she hadn't heard his conversation with his mom.
But Aaron had suddenly made his feelings clear!
It was the first time he had ever gently shut her down.
Why the sudden rejection?
Was it because of Nora?
"Miss Hamilton, should I still come tonight?"
Ember, noticing Suzy's vibe, asked cautiously.
Suzy tightened her grip, squashing down her swirling thoughts.
"Yes, you should come. Ember, I'll make sure you're well compensated, but could you do me a favor?"
Central Hospital.
Noon.
Nora received a text from Becky.
"When will you arrive? I'm waiting for you at the detention center."
Nora opened the door, took a seat, and quickly texted back, "On my way."
An hour later, she met an impatient Becky.
Becky's face was cold, her eyes dripping with resentment.
Nora faced her calmly, led by an acquaintance into the detention center to see Martha.
The setting mattered.
After a few days in jail, Martha seemed to have aged a decade.
Gone were the days of the once lavish socialite of her past.
Nora sat across from her, getting straight to the point, "Cut to it. How did my mother die?"
Martha locked eyes with her. "Before I say, swear you'll divorce Lucas immediately."
Nora had been planning to divorce Lucas anyway, so she nodded. "Deal."
Martha demanded, "Swear it. If you don't divorce him, the person you love most will be crashed into a car wreck the moment they step out."
Nora furrowed her brows. "Alright, I swear."
Satisfied, Martha gazed at Nora's graceful face. "Your mother went to jail to cover up for your father."
"Do you have proof?" Nora asked.
"No proof."
"Then why strike a deal? I already knew about my mom taking the fall for my dad," Nora said.
"While I got no hard proof, I know your father's housekeeper, Allen Joe, knows the truth."
Martha paused. "Your dad has always been good to Allen Joe, consulting him on everything. Allen Joe's kids landed top corporate jobs through your dad's influence and have been amassing wealth unchecked, and yet he doesn't intervene."
"Think about it. Allen Joe is just a housekeeper. It seems fishy, right? Look into him, you'll find the truth."
Nora pondered for a moment, recalling her dad always treating Allen Joe exceptionally well.
Not quite like an employer to a servant, but more akin to brothers.
Yet Allen Joe was merely a worker; without any value to exploit, her dad wouldn't have allowed such kindness.
Nora's mind was working rapidly as she looked at Martha. "You still haven't told me exactly how my mom died."
A flicker in Martha's eyes. "Your mother died of an illness."
"Illness?"
Nora stared at her. "You lying? If you lie, may your loved ones perish miserably!"
Martha's eyes shot up, her face twisting momentarily.
After a pause, she shut her eyes, resigning herself to defeat. "I caused your mother's death. In my desperation to secure the position as Mrs. Smith, I bribed the prison doctor to swap her medication."
She had finally confessed.
Nora throat tightened, brimming with sorrow for her mother and seething with hatred for Martha's cruelty.
Taking a deep breath, Nora pulled out a voice recorder. "I've recorded our entire conversation. Turn yourself in. Once you do, I'll divorce Lucas."
With that, Nora stood up to leave.
Martha's voice rang out from behind, "Nora, you better keep your promise, or I'll haunt you forever!"
Nora's stride faltered, grip tightening on her bag strap.
Martha was cruel, but when it came to Becky, she was unsparingly kind.
If it weren't for Becky's happiness, Nora doubted Martha would have divulged the truth so readily.
Outside the jailhouse doors, Becky blocked her path.
"Nora, are you going to divorce Lucas?" she asked.
"Yes," Nora spat out.
Becky hastily produced divorce papers from her purse.
"Then sign first."
Becky couldn't wait.
Without hesitation, Nora glanced at the document and signed her name with a swift stroke of the pen.
It wasn't a surprise that she was walking away with nothing.
She never intended to claim anything from Lucas.
Seeing Nora's sign brought a smile to Becky's face.
A week later, Becky called, "Nora, you and Lucas need to attend a hearing. When are you free to hit the court with Lucas?"
