Chapter 358 Broken Wrist
Contrary to expectation, the anticipated pain never arrived. Instead, Billy heard the pitiful whimpering of the dog, a sound akin to a creature that had been cruelly beaten. Cautiously, he opened his eyes to find the dog toppled over, a stick lying ominously next to it."Billy!" Nora's voice sliced through the tense air as she rushed to his side, her eyes scanning him anxiously. "Are you okay?"Unfazed, Billy shook his head, his voice steady as he reassured her, "Don't worry, Mommy, I'm fine." Relief washed over Nora as she pulled him into a tight embrace. "It is such a relief you're okay, you scared me.""Billy," Alex and Samantha echoed, both out of breath from their hurried approach. Alex's eyes were filled with concern as he asked, "Are you okay?""I'm fine," Billy responded, his voice steady. Samantha chimed in, "Thank goodness Dad intervened in time and injured the dog. Otherwise, it would have bitten you."Upon hearing this, Billy looked up at Aaron, gratitude shining in his eyes. "Thank you, Uncle Gordon.""It’s my pleasure," Aaron responded, ruffling Billy’s hair affectionately. His handsome face was set in a grim expression as his gaze fell on the dogs being restrained by several servants. His voice was stern as he demanded, "Whose insane dog is this?" His anger was palpable. The dog had nearly injured Billy."It seems to belong to the Turner family's young master," one servant offered. Aaron's gaze hardened, his jaw clenching. Yesterday, Ken had quarreled with three children, and today, his dog had almost bitten Billy."Ryan, don't faint. Wake up! Hurry, go call a doctor!" Another servant's frantic shout broke the tense silence. Billy turned to Nora urgently, "Mommy, you should go and check on Ryan. The dog bit him while he was protecting me.""Okay," Nora agreed, quickly making her way towards Ryan. His face was deathly pale, his arm bloody and hanging limply. Nora signaled for the servant to lay him down and she knelt to examine him. After a moment, her face turned serious as she quickly pulled out some medical equipment, inserting needles into several acupoints on the child."A dog bit off the tendons in his hand. He must be taken to the hospital for surgery immediately," she announced, her voice grim. The servant turned pale at her words."What? Ryan's hand tendons are severed!" The news sent shockwaves through the crowd. The Woodhouse family, who had been among the guests drawn by the commotion, rushed forward."Ryan, what happened to you!" Mrs. Woodhouse cried out in shock. The servant quickly relayed the situation, his face ashen. Mrs. Woodhouse swayed, nearly fainting at the news. "My son's tendons are severed? He was supposed to become a pianist in the future!"At this point, Mr. Woodhouse pushed his way through the crowd. Mrs. Woodhouse clutched his hand, her voice choked with tears, "What should we do? A dog bit off our son's tendons!"
Mr. Woodhouse's face drained of color, his eyes instantly turning red. He scooped up Ryan and shouted, "Ryan, don't scare Dad, wake up!"Nora interjected, "Mr. Woodhouse, I have sealed his acupoints, temporarily preserving his life. You must take him to the hospital for surgery immediately." Mr. Woodhouse glanced at her and nodded, "Thank you." Without another word, he carried his son and quickly moved forward.Nora moved to follow, but Aaron stopped her, "Nora." She paused, "The child's tendons are severed. If the doctor who treats him is not highly skilled, the outcome may not be good. I want to go and see.""I'll accompany you," Aaron offered."No need," Nora replied, her mind already on the task ahead.
Nora cast a glance at her trio of children, her voice laced with urgency, "Promise me you'll look after each other." The three little ones had narrowly escaped an accident, and all she desired was to whisk them away from the looming danger. Yet, her duty as a physician held her back, compelling her to face the situation head-on. Her only option was to entrust their care to Aaron, albeit temporarily.Despite her instinct to maintain a distance from Aaron, she couldn't deny the comfort his presence brought her, especially in this moment of crisis. The mere thought of him with the children brought an inexplicable sense of calm."There's no need to apologize, Nora," Aaron assured her softly, "I'll stay with the children. Go, do what you must."With a nod of gratitude, Nora turned to her children, her voice firm yet gentle, "Mommy has to go to the hospital. Please, stay put and don't wander off.""Okay," the children chorused in unison, their voices echoing with understanding."Frederick," Aaron called out, glancing at the man. Frederick, catching his drift, quickly moved to accompany Nora. As they departed, Aaron pulled the children closer, his gaze lingering on the restrained dog, lost in thought. The Alaskan husky, a breed known for its gentle nature and amicability towards humans, had inexplicably attacked. The fact that it belonged to the Turner family's young master only added to the mystery. As he mulled over this, Kenneth and Howard, the two brothers, approached."Alex, Billy, Samantha, are you alright?" Kenneth asked, his voice heavy with concern."They're unharmed, but the Woodhouse family's young master might be in trouble," Aaron explained, recounting the incident at the hospital with Nora."We're aware. My aunt is on their way to the hospital," Kenneth informed him. Ryan, the heir of the Woodhouse family, was also Emma's grandson."Why would an Alaskan husky, known for its gentle temperament, attack someone?" Howard pondered aloud. Aaron glanced at him, "Howard, you're familiar with medicine. Could you examine the dog and see if there's anything amiss?"The Turner family's young master's dog, coupled with the recent conflict between him and the children, made the situation seem less coincidental and more suspicious."Alright," Howard agreed, moving towards the restrained dog. As he examined it, he noticed its unfocused eyes, reminiscent of someone under the influence of drugs. After a moment's contemplation, Howard announced, "I suspect the dog may have ingested something harmful." The children exchanged glances at his words."Uncle Howard, Samantha and Ryan just fed it dog food," Billy interjected. Samantha nodded in agreement, her voice barely above a whisper, "It was well-behaved while eating, and we even patted its head. But it started attacking people right after it finished eating.""Is there any leftover dog food?" Howard asked, standing up.A servant pointed towards the scattered dog food on the ground. Howard picked up a few pieces, examining them closely. They were slightly damp, as though soaked in water. Bringing them closer to his nose, he frowned. His years of dealing with medicine had made him sensitive to certain smells, and even the faintest whiff of the dog food seemed unusual."This dog food should be sent for analysis," he declared.Aaron's dark eyes narrowed at his words, "Howard, is there something wrong with the dog food?"Howard nodded, "I suspect this dog food is laced with hallucinogens."His revelation sent a ripple of shock through the onlookers."Hallucinogens in dog food? How is that possible?""Who would do such a thing? Is this some sort of sick joke or a deliberate act of harm?" The questions hung heavy in the air, unanswered.
