Chapter 891 Saying I Forced a Marriage
Zephyr forced a smile and gave a noncommittal hum.
The room fell into an eerie silence.
When Jane came back, she immediately sensed something was off.
"What's wrong? Is his wound getting worse?"
She looked worried. Nora replied, "It's nothing, don't worry. He's fine."
Jane glanced suspiciously at Zephyr, who smiled but said nothing.
"Since there's no need for treatment today, we'll head back," Aaron said.
"Alright, sorry to trouble you both. I'll see you out."
Jane escorted them out.
"Dr. Smith, did something happen just now? Did Zephyr find out about his complications?"
Jane, being perceptive, quickly guessed the issue.
"Yes, he's a doctor. When he heard us talking about the treatment, he figured it out, so I didn't hide it from him," Nora said.
Jane was silent for a moment. "I see. So, his treatment will start after he's discharged?"
"Yes. Contact me after he's out of the hospital."
"Alright. I'll see you out."
"No need to see us out. Go comfort him," Nora said.
Jane didn't insist. "Okay, take care."
After seeing Nora and Aaron off, Jane returned to the room.
Seeing Zephyr sitting quietly on the bed, Jane first washed an apple for him, then sat by the bed to peel it.
"Zephyr, what are you thinking about?"
Zephyr glanced at her and suddenly said, "About breaking up after returning home."
Jane's hand slipped, breaking the apple peel.
She looked up at him. "Zephyr, what do you mean? Didn't we agree that you'd marry me after you got back?"
"I've changed my mind," Zephyr looked away and said calmly.
Jane frowned and asked, "Why?"
Zephyr was silent for a moment, then said, "I've thought about it. I don't have much feeling for you. I was just trying to handle the situation with my family when I asked you to be my girlfriend. I don't want to marry just for the sake of it."
Jane looked at him and added, "Is that how you really feel?"
"Yes."
"I don't believe you," Jane said.
Zephyr looked at her and took a deep breath. "Look at you, you're not feminine at all, and you're flat-chested. I'm looking for a wife, not a buddy!"
"Zephyr!"
Jane stood up abruptly, her chest heaving.
Zephyr's fingers curled slightly, but his face showed a mocking expression.
"Are you angry? Sorry, I'm a patient now, and I'm in pain, so I'm in a bad mood and spoke bluntly."
Staring at him, Jane took a deep breath and slowly sat back down.
"Zephyr, you've been injured a few times, so you've become stupid. I won't stoop to your level."
Jane picked up the fruit knife and continued peeling the apple.
Seeing that she wasn't angered away, Zephyr sighed inwardly.
"Jane, I took a bullet for you. You don't need to feel guilty. In that situation, I would've done the same for anyone. So, you don't need to repay me by marrying me."
Zephyr was puzzled as to why Jane suddenly talked about marriage after he woke up.
It turned out Jane felt guilty!
Because he took a bullet for Jane, which injured his nerves and affected his career, Jane felt compelled to agree to marry him.
Although he wanted to marry Jane, Zephyr wasn't so despicable as to use his good deed to force Jane into a marriage out of guilt.
That was not what a man should do.
Jane looked at Zephyr. "Do you really think I proposed because I feel guilty?"
"Isn't that it?" Zephyr shot back.
Jane paused. "Yes, I do feel guilty."
"Then that's it."
A trace of mockery flashed in Zephyr's eyes. "I'm not so desperate that I need someone to marry me out of guilt."
Jane took a deep breath. "What if I said I've fallen for you?"
Zephyr glanced at her, clearly skeptical.
"Jane, you don't need to lie. We haven't known each other long, and you're so aloof. How could you suddenly fall for me?"
Jane frowned. "You don't believe me?"
"No."
Jane was speechless. Zephyr was being foolish again.
Feelings were unpredictable.
She didn't even know when she started having feelings for Zephyr.
She really wasn't proposing out of guilt!
Jane took a deep breath. "In any case, I won't break up."
Zephyr glanced at her. "Ms. Harvey, I'm already this injured because of you. Do you want me to be kidnapped by your enemies again and lose another half of my life?"
Jane lowered her eyes, peeling the apple. She knew Zephyr was saying this on purpose.
Zephyr wanted her to give up on him.
"You're tough. Even if you lose half your life, you still have the other half. If something similar happens again, I'll have Dr. Smith save the remaining half of your life."
Zephyr was both angry and amused. "Jane, not only are you ugly, but you're also ruthless. You heartless woman!"
Jane wasn't annoyed and continued peeling the apple calmly.
"You brought this on yourself by getting involved with me. You reap what you sow."
Zephyr was speechless. "Jane, don't forget you're a cop. You should have a sense of morality."
Jane looked up, raising an eyebrow. "Do you want my boss's number?"
"For what?"
"To report me, of course. Tell him I'm forcing you into marriage."
Zephyr was speechless.
Jane diligently took care of Zephyr in the hospital for a week, regardless of his cold attitude towards her.
A week later, Zephyr was ready to be discharged.
Jane contacted Nora to see when she could give Zephyr treatment.
Nora told them to come to Hugo's estate, where she would treat Zephyr.
Jane hung up and told Zephyr.
Zephyr replied indifferently, "No need. I'm planning to go back."
Jane frowned. "Zephyr, don't be childish. Nora is skilled. She can definitely cure your complications."
Zephyr said, "I'm a doctor too. I'm aware of my own condition."
Jane looked at his stubborn face, feeling exasperated.
"Zephyr, what are you thinking? Who are you trying to fight?"
Zephyr pressed his lips together, saying nothing.
Jane was furious. "Fine, you just don't want to marry me. As long as you let Nora treat you, I won't force you, okay?"
Zephyr finally looked at her, a trace of mockery in his eyes.
"You definitely made the proposal out of guilt. If I'm cured, you won't feel guilty anymore, right?"
Jane was at a loss for words, unable to explain.
"Think whatever you want. Are you going to get treated or not?"
"I said I'm not."
Jane was infuriated by Zephyr's stubbornness.
Her knuckles cracked as she clenched her fists.
"Zephyr, don't push me!"
