Chapter 1021 Exploiting Human Weaknesses
Manuel and Dale were sweating bullets as Nora's cold, emotionless countdown echoed.
"Five, four, three, two, one!"
When they still didn't talk, Nora called out, "Seraphina."
"Yes."
Seraphina waved a needle in front of them. "Should I paralyze you, make you incontinent, twist your mouth and eyes, or maybe give you a taste of sudden cardiac arrest?"
Every time Hugo translated, Manuel and Dale shrank back more.
As Seraphina moved to stab him, Dale finally broke. "I'll talk! Mr. Christensen can't communicate with the dead; he's faking it!"
Signe, gagged, glared at Dale, making muffled sounds, clearly wanting to curse.
Everyone leaned in, eager to hear more.
Nora smiled. "So, how do you fake all this supernatural stuff?"
Dale explained, "We have people outside gathering info on families wanting rituals. We analyze what they want, then fake the supernatural. Because they revere God and we tell them what they want to hear, they believe us."
Nora pressed on, "How do you make them believe you can summon the dead?"
Dale continued, "We use tricks, have people pretend to be spirits, and say things we've learned about them. Then we throw in generic advice like 'be good' and 'you'll be blessed,' and they buy it."
The crowd was shocked.
Astrid couldn't believe it. "You're lying! I saw a terminal cancer patient get better under Signe's treatment. Many said their pain was reduced after his rituals!"
"Yeah, I've heard that too," Mia added.
"That's because..." Dale glanced at Signe's murderous look and hesitated.
"Go on," Nora urged.
Dale swallowed, wiped his sweat, and said, "We give patients sedatives before rituals to numb their nerves. So during the rituals, they don't feel pain."
The crowd was outraged.
Nora shot a cold glance at Signe. "Do they feel the pain again after the treatment?"
"Yes, which makes them even more convinced of Mr. Christensen's abilities," Dale said. "People need faith. Sometimes mental treatment helps. Some with less severe illnesses might recover after treatment; we just go through the motions."
Nora summed it up, "So, Signe can't summon spirits; he just exploits human weaknesses to fake it?"
"Yes."
"So, why did you call Millie a jinx?" Nora asked directly.
"Because we found out about Millie's background and knew Mia disliked her, so we said it."
Nora looked around. "Did you all hear that?"
Everyone's faces changed, their faith crumbling. The Signe they worshipped for years was a fraud!
"Seraphina."
Nora signaled for Seraphina to let Signe speak.
Seraphina removed the needle.
Signe clutched his chest, coughed, then grabbed a stick and started hitting Manuel and Dale. "I'll teach you to talk nonsense, you traitors!"
Manuel and Dale screamed and ran out, with Signe chasing them.
"Trying to run? Frederick, catch him!" Aaron ordered coldly.
He and Nora knew Signe was guilty and trying to escape.
"Yes."
Frederick easily grabbed Signe by the collar and threw him in front of Nora and Aaron.
Nora looked down at Signe. "Still want to say Millie is a jinx?"
Signe glared. "You will be cursed by the gods!"
Unrepentant!
Nora's face turned cold as she shoved a pill into Signe's mouth.
Caught off guard, Signe swallowed it and clutched his throat in terror. "What did you give me?"
"Aren't you a doctor? Check it yourself," Nora said coldly. "You can leave now."
Signe cursed and stumbled away.
Aaron asked, "Honey, what did you give him?"
Nora replied, "That pill will make him feel like his insides are being crushed, so painful he'll wish he were dead. I want him to remember this pain and see if he dares to fake the supernatural again."
Everyone looked at Nora with some fear.
Astrid glared. "How can you do this to Mr. Christensen? The gods will punish you!"
Walter snapped, "Shut up! Didn't you hear? Signe has no ability to communicate with the dead."
Astrid hesitated, still in disbelief. Signe hadn't used his powers to kill these Chrisland people; instead, they exposed him. How could she accept this?
"Mrs. Rochet, do you still believe Millie is a jinx?" Nora asked Mia.
Mia's eyes flickered, and she stayed silent.
Nora continued, "I know you don't like Millie, but she's still your family. I don't ask you to love her, but can you at least not be harsh on her?"
Mia looked at Millie and thought of Stov's death, which was because of Emmeline. She couldn't bring herself to love Millie, so she kept quiet.
Aaron's face darkened. "That's also what I want to say. If we hear you spreading rumors that Millie is a jinx, you'll end up like them today. You can try!"
Mia, having witnessed Signe and his group's suffering, felt anxious. She wasn't stupid and wouldn't risk her life.
Diego quickly said, "We won't, don't worry. I'll keep Mia in check. Millie is our only family; we can't love her enough."
