Chapter 502 Memories

In the living room, Nora took a sip of juice and said directly, "Mr. Jones, after I examined your body yesterday, I found that you have a problem. Do you know about it yourself?"

Matthew took a sip of water and smiled faintly, saying, "I know. I have a terminal illness, and I don't have much time left."

He really knew!

Sympathy appeared in Nora's eyes.

"Mr. Jones, how did you get poisoned? Who poisoned you?" she doubted.

Matthew's hand tightened slightly as he held the cup, and a flicker of emotion was visible in his lowered eyes.

"My wife," he replied.

Nora looked astonished and puzzled, confirming, "Your wife? Erin's mother?"

"Yes," he answered.

"Why?" Nora was shocked and puzzled, asking.

Matthew explained, "Because my wife Freya's family and mine are enemies. Due to certain reasons, her brother died when he was young, and his death was somewhat related to my family. So, her father has always wanted to avenge him. After I married Freya, he had her poison me."

So, that's the reason?

Nora continued to look at him, still shocked and puzzled.

"Then Freya poisoned you herself?" she asked.

"No, she was not aware of it," he said.

Matthew recalled the past, sorrow flashing in his eyes.

"Freya's father knew that I had a habit of drinking coffee every morning, so he found a way to have someone replace my coffee with poison, and Freya handed it to me herself."

Freya personally gave her husband poison!

If Freya truly loved him, she must have found this fact unbearable.

Nora thought Freya's father was too ruthless. Did he want to deepen the hatred between the two families?

Emotions surged in Nora's heart, but she also had some doubts.

"You said your family and Freya's family are enemies, so how did you end up marrying Freya?"

Matthew held the cup, slowly rubbing it.

"Because we love each other. Although our families are enemies, it didn't stop us from growing up together and falling in love."

So, they had known each other since they were young and gradually fell in love.

Nora looked at his sorrowful expression and understood, mulling over, 'The grudges between the families didn't affect their feelings. The hearts of young people are the most uncontrollable, and the hatred between families couldn't stop their love.'

"I was actually very naive when I was young. You can say I was an idealist, or you can think of me as foolish," he added.

Matthew smiled self-deprecatingly, his eyes filled with indescribable emotions.

"After I grew up, my dad tasked me with taking over the family business. I decided to mend ties with Freya's family by marrying her."

"I poured my heart out to Freya, and she agreed. We broke the news to our families."

"My folks initially resisted, but they caved in due to my persistence. However, Freya's parents remained staunchly against it, even locking her up. Luckily, a loyal servant set her free, and she fled to be with me."

"I figured we should marry first and deal with her parents later. So, I announced our wedding."

"Despite her father's threats to disown her, Freya stood by me. We planned to talk to her family when the time was right."

"We hoped our marriage would heal the rift between our families, but it backfired. My naivety led to Freya's tragic end, failing to mend the feud and causing her demise."
Matthew said all this in one breath, his eyes filled with uncontrollable sorrow.

Nora listened carefully and felt deeply saddened as well, handing him a tissue and asking, "So, how did your wife die?"

Matthew took the tissue, closed his eyes, swallowed hard, and his voice became hoarse.

"After downing that poisoned coffee, I was hit with intense stomach pain, teetering on the edge of death. Thankfully, our family doctor worked to counteract the poison's effects, though eliminating it was no walk in the park."

"Following the crisis, my family had me detox while they delved into the poisoning incident, revealing Freya's father as the culprit. My wife, seven months pregnant, confronted her father, who callously made her ingest poison, deeming her an enemy for marrying me. I never fathomed her parents could be so heartless, so cruel to their flesh and blood."
Matthew's eyes were bloodshot, filled with sorrow.

Nora also felt the pain in his words and shared the same lament with Matthew.

Why would there be such a heartless father in the world? Was he really Freya's biological father?

Nora felt that perhaps she didn't understand human nature well enough.

Some people might prioritize family interests over personal ones, but even so, would they go as far as forcing their daughter to take poison?

Nora continued to ask, "So, did your wife die in her family's home like that?"

Matthew calmed his emotions a bit and said, "No, when she went back, she brought a few bodyguards with her. They did everything they could to save her and brought her back home."

He paused for a moment, and his eyes welled up with tears again.

"However, when Freya arrived home, she was already in critical condition. She used the last of her strength to beg me to save our child."

Matthew's voice choked up, he closed his eyes, and in a hoarse voice, he said, "Finally, the family doctor performed a cesarean section to deliver the baby, but she also passed away."

With that, the whole story came to an end.

Nora sighed. "What a tragic story, it's heartbreaking."

Nora saw that the tissue in Matthew's hand had been crumpled into a ball, clearly showing his immense sorrow.

She sighed lightly and handed him a few more tissues.

Matthew made an effort to compose himself, thanked Nora, and held back the tears in his eyes.

Nora watched as he turned slightly, wiping away the tears in the corners of his eyes. Thinking about what he had just said, Nora realized something.

"So, the poison you were affected by was actually curable, right?" she asked.

Matthew tossed the tissue aside and straightened his posture.

"Yes. Although the poison was strong, it was indeed curable, but it just required some time."

Nora furrowed her brow and asked, "Then why wasn't the poison in your body treated and removed?"

"Because I didn't want to receive treatment," he explained.

His words made Nora widen her eyes, looking at him in disbelief.

"Why?" she questioned.

He didn't want to receive treatment, so he let the poison remain in his body, slowly eroding his health until he became beyond saving!

Nora thought he was being foolish!
