Chapter 1044 Coup
Mateo's subordinate made the call instead of him, saying Tomas's heartbeat stopped during the night.
Mateo rushed to Tomas's room after hearing the news. It's been three hours, and he still hasn't come out.
Mateo told his subordinate that if he didn't come out in two hours, something might be wrong, and he should get Aaron and Nora.
Aaron frowned after hearing the report. "Got it."
The coup in Hchilia finally happened. What timing!
After hanging up, Aaron explained the situation to Nora and grumbled, "Mateo is useless. We've prepped so much for him, and he still messes up."
Nora replied, "Stop blaming him. Think about it, there's Scarlett in the royal family, Rafael plotting, and Yandel and Miguel as accomplices. Their power isn't small.
Mateo's alone; it's understandable he can't fight them. We should get ready to help."
Aaron knew she was right. If the coup had happened earlier, he wouldn't complain.
Aaron glanced at heavily pregnant Nora and frowned. "Honey, you're about to give birth. How about I go alone, and you stay home?"
Nora paused but then said, "Do you feel safe leaving me alone?"
She wanted to ask if he could perform acupuncture to wake Tomas, but if she did, Aaron would suggest Seraphina do it. She needed another way to convince him.
Changing her approach might make it easier for Aaron to accept. She couldn't just sit and do nothing.
Aaron frowned but stayed silent, so Nora knew she was right. She acted coy. "Alright, let's not waste time. Let's get ready."
Aaron looked worried. "Can you handle it?"
Nora smiled. "Don't worry, I'll bring my medical team. If I feel unwell, they can help."
They needed a top medical team because of Rafael's plot. No one knew if Rafael would ignore her, Tomas's goddaughter.
If it were just her and Aaron, even with her princess title, it might not be enough to intimidate Rafael. If Rafael had Yandel say they conspired with Mateo to harm Tomas and put Mateo on the throne, they couldn't explain themselves.
But with a top medical team, it would be different. If Rafael made a move against them, it would have a big impact if something serious happened.
Seeing Nora's determination, Aaron didn't delay and mobilized military forces, dispatching two helicopters.
Nora contacted the standby medical team, explained the situation, and had them meet her.
Later, with a dozen medical personnel and bodyguards, they headed to the helipad.
The two military helicopters reached Hchilia quickly. Hugo and Noe came with twenty elite soldiers to escort them to the royal palace.
Meanwhile, inside the palace, Rafael detained Mateo in Tomas's room.
Mateo glared at the weak Tomas on the bed and snapped, "Rafael, cut the act. You took my phone and won't let me call Nora to treat our father. You just want to seize power, right?"
Rafael laughed. "No need to pretend anymore. Yes, I want the throne. Once he takes his last breath, Hchilia is mine!"
Tomas had stopped breathing, but when Mateo arrived, he started again. Yandel checked and said Tomas was barely hanging on.
They were all waiting for Tomas to die. Once he did, it would be over.
"Why? He's your father. How can you commit patricide?" Mateo glared, even though he was prepared, hearing it still hurt.
"Who can prove I did? It's you, the illegitimate child, who caused his death!" Rafael sneered arrogantly.
As Mateo suspected, Rafael planned to kill Tomas and blame it on him.
Mateo glanced at Tomas, hoping he could hear. "You want to blame me for his death?"
"Of course, who else?" Rafael sneered. "If you hadn't fought me for the throne, he wouldn't be in this state!"
Mateo's eyes widened. "I get it. You had Yandel tamper with his medicine. That's why he's like this!"
Rafael snorted. "You're smart, but too late. He drank poison, not tonic. I've been waiting for this. He'll die, and you'll be the murderer!"
His sinister words hung in the air. Tomas's fingers twitched, trying to wake up, but then went still.
"Rafael, you're cruel!" Mateo cursed, then turned to Scarlett. "And you, Scarlett, you poisoned your husband! After all these years, you conspired with Rafael. How could you?"
Scarlett glanced at Tomas, guilt in her eyes, but she looked away. "Yes, he's my husband, but did he treat me as his wife? He loves your mother, Evelyn! And now he wants to pass the throne to you. What about me? What about Rafael and Miguel?
Rafael and Miguel are legitimate princes, but they lose to you, an illegitimate child. Why should I help such a husband?"
Initially, Scarlett didn't want to help Rafael, but his persistence wore her down.
Tomas's coldness towards her, even refusing to share a bed, made her frustrated and disappointed.
So she agreed. She thought, 'It's Tomas's fault for wanting to pass the throne to Mateo.'
"Mother, Rafael, let's not wait. Have Dr. Yanez give him a strong dose and end it!" Miguel, impatient, spoke up.
Rafael said, "No, when he dies, the palace doctor will do the final check. If Dr. Yanez gives him a strong dose now, the doctor will notice."
"Then kill the doctor," Miguel said, making a throat-slitting gesture.
