Chapter 24 Give him another big gift
Becky fell to the floor after being slapped.
Staring at the bright red wedding photo in Nora's hand, her face showed a rapid succession of emotions.
"Nora, how dare you hit me!"
"I hit you all right!"
Looking down at her with contempt, Nora retorted, "Like mother, like daughter, Becky. You and your mom, always conniving and manipulative! You pushed me towards divorce, backed me into a corner. Is this what mistresses today are like? So arrogantly domineering?"
The bystanders began to understand what was happening.
"Oh wow, I thought it was the wife catching a mistress here. Turns out, the mistress is trying to turn the tables!"
"That's right. Since when do mistresses get so bold and offensive? It's utterly sickening!"
“How could Becky be so brazen if not for poor upbringing? Didn't the wife say it herself? Becky’s mother also climbed the ranks through affairs!”
Whispers surrounded Becky as people pointed and sneered at her disdainfully.
Becky's face grew pale with rage as she picked herself up from the ground.
Inside, Nora smirked and pinched herself slyly, forcing a few tears.
"Becky, for four years, you've clung to my husband, refusing to let go. Now that he's seen the error of his ways and realized my worth, looking to make amends, here you are causing a scene. How shameless can you be? Your conscience must be dead." she cried, clutching her chest.
The onlookers shot sympathetic glances towards Nora, while continuing to despise Becky.
Pampered from birth, Becky wasn’t used to facing defeat.
Enraged to the point of madness, she lunged at Nora.
"Shut up, Nora! I swear I'll tear that mouth apart today!"
But Nora, eyes glinting coldly, sidestepped and landed a kick that sent Becky tumbling to the ground. Nora then pounced on her, raining down punches.
"All my life, you've stolen from me, Becky, and I've tolerated it. But how could you stoop so low, to such shamelessness?"
Taking her husband was one thing, but causing her to be humiliated by strangers?
Now, it was time to settle all scores.
Becky screamed and wailed under the assault.
"Lucas! Help me! Are you going to watch her kill me?"
Lucas stood dumbfounded, never imagining his once gentle and even-tempered woman could be so fierce.
She was fighting over him!
Was she still in love with him?
A smug delight crept into Lucas's heart as he watched Becky's face swell up like a balloon, before he intervened, half-heartedly.
"Nora, that's enough. Stop it now."
Nora let herself be pulled up only to whirl around and deliver a stinging slap to Lucas.
The sound was sharply resounding.
Stunned, Lucas clutched his face, unable to believe what had just happened.
"Nora, did you hit me?"
The cold glint in Nora's eyes faded as she feigned panic.
"I'm so sorry, Lucas! It wasn't intentional, I just... I lost control for a moment."
Though Lucas was inwardly irritated by the slap, seeing Nora’s seemingly frail appearance dampened his anger.
Nora watched as a disheveled Becky staggeringly stood up, her eyes calculating.
"Lucas," she said, turning to him with a pointed question. "If you had to choose again, who would it be?"
Lucas was taken aback as he glanced between Nora's pristine, ethereal face and Becky's, which was made up heavily, resembling a ghost. He had already made his comparison.
"Of course I choose you!"
He chose Nora!
Becky was livid, aiming to scratch his face.
"Lucas, you jerk! Have you forgotten who was your rock, who helped you secure your place in the family? I stood by you, the butt of jokes for four years. How could you do this to me?"
Caught off guard, Lucas flinched as her nails scratched on his cheek, a mixture of pain and anger washing over him.
"Becky, don't sugarcoat it! What you're after is my status, not me! Remember how you snubbed me before I was acknowledged by my family?"
"So what? Lucas, you're my husband now; you have to take responsibility for me!"
"You've got it all wrong, Becky. We're not even married! Nora is my wife now!"
"Lucas, I swear, if you betray me, I'll make you pay!"
As the two grappled with each other, Nora's lips curled into a slight grin as she grabbed her belongings and breezed out the door. She had recorded their conversation on her phone the night before and sent it to Becky, certain that it would provoke a confrontation.
This was her sweet revenge on the pair that had wronged her, and the satisfaction was pure bliss.
In the crowd, a tall man watched Nora leave and emotionlessly approached a woman who was filming.
"Let me check your phone."
The woman was startled, staring at the man nervously.
"What are you trying to do?"
"Don't worry, I'm not a bad guy."
He simply wanted to send the footage to Noe to complete his duty as a protector.
Inside, Lucas, now with a scratched face, shoved Becky away and bellowed, "Becky, have you lost your mind?"
He was thoroughly exasperated and growing more detestable of her presence by the second. Lucas , touching his scratched face, looked around for Nora.
Becky hit the floor, her chest heaving with indignation. Seeing Lucas looking for Nora, she let out a mocking laugh.
"What's so funny? Have you gone mad?" Lucas glared at her.
Becky stopped laughing and climbed to her feet.
"Lucas, do you really think that Nora wants to rekindle old flames? You're wrong! She's deliberately driving a wedge between us!"
"Why do you think I came here? She sent me the recording of your call. Lucas, she was just getting back at us!"
A cascade of words washed over Lucas, bringing the fevered pitch of his passion back down to a tranquil simmer.
He replayed the events in his mind and, to his shock, realized that Nora had played him for a fool.
He had thought, truly believed, that she didn't want to end their marriage.
Instead, she had used the opportunity to humiliate him and Becky!
"Nora, she dared to play me like that!"
Meanwhile, Nora was in high spirits, driving from the supermarket with a stash of strawberries and other snacks, ready to head home.
Then, Lucas's call came through.
With a chilly laugh, Nora didn't even consider rejecting the call.
"Hello?"
"Nora, you've got some nerve, playing me like that!" Lucas's voice crackled through the line, grinding his teeth in anger.
Nora smirked, "So what if I did?"
"Fine, very fine! Nora, in that case, don't think for a second your three brats will step foot in school again!"
Nora's grip on the steering wheel tightened upon hearing Lucas's threat.
"Lucas, do you think you own the schools? They have their policies and will adhere to them. If my kids meet the admissions criteria, they will attend, no problem!"
"We shall see, Nora. You'll be begging me yet!" Lucas spat back before abruptly hanging up.
Nora's gaze fixed on the road ahead, her eyebrows knitting slightly in concern.
She'd vented four years of pent-up frustration, but now what about the children's school enrollment?
