Chapter 1066 He Doesn't Need to Pay
Someone was tailing Samantha. The dude behind her was all decked out in black, moving like a ninja—definitely not your average Joe.
The Gordon Family, being the big shots in Houston, always had a target on their backs for all sorts of shady characters.
Alfred's face turned grim. Out of habit, he didn't jump out right away. Instead, he stayed hidden, keeping an eye on the guy trailing Samantha.
Samantha had no clue Alfred was around. She was just humming a tune, strutting her stuff towards the local market.
She had this wild idea to follow a cooking video and whip up some dishes to surprise Wesley. She got to the market and blended in with the crowd.
Samantha wasn't exactly a market regular. The hustle and bustle inside made her eyes widen with curiosity. She spotted a puddle and carefully tiptoed around it.
A few folks were ahead of her, mostly locals who didn't give a hoot and just plowed through the puddle.
Water splashed onto Samantha's leg. She yelped and jumped aside. Someone bumped into her, almost knocking her over. But she was quick on her feet and steadied herself.
The guy in black, Yahir Yanez, picked up his pace and reached out like he was gonna grab her.
Alfred's eyes narrowed. In a flash, he had Yahir's arms pinned. "What do you think you're doing?"
The sudden commotion made everyone around stop and stare. Yahir was caught off guard but quickly tried to fight back.
Alfred's face was stone-cold, and he wasn't letting Yahir go anywhere.
Samantha was stunned for a moment. Seeing who was fighting, she shouted, "Cut it out, both of you! Alfred, Yahir, knock it off."
Hearing Samantha, they both stepped back, giving each other some space.
Samantha hurried over.
"Miss Gordon," Yahir, who was sent by Aaron as a bodyguard, greeted her respectfully.
Samantha gave a nod and looked at Alfred, both surprised and happy. "Alfred, what are you doing here? And why are you brawling with my bodyguard?"
Hearing Yahir's title, Alfred realized Yahir was a Gordon Family bodyguard, not some crook. He felt a bit awkward. "Sorry, I overreacted."
Samantha giggled and grabbed Alfred's arm. "No need to apologize. You should give him a hard time. They're like my dad's spies, always keeping tabs on me."
She knew Yahir was sent by Aaron and Nora. Even though they meant well, being constantly watched was a drag.
The sweet scent from Samantha made Alfred tense up. The spot where she touched him felt like it was on fire, making him all jittery.
"Alfred, why's your face so red? Are you hot?" Samantha noticed his odd expression and reached out to touch his forehead.
Alfred quickly dodged. "It's nothing, just got a bit heated from the scuffle."
Samantha bought it and didn't think twice. "You still haven't told me why you're here. Did King Mateo show up?"
Samantha grinned, her eyes lighting up, and Alfred's gaze flickered. "Nah, didn't you tell me to get out more during my break? So here I am."
Samantha nodded. "Oh right, you're on vacation. Did Billy tip you off that I was here, so you came to find me?"
"Yep."
"Awesome, I'll cook for you later," Samantha declared boldly.
Alfred was taken aback. "You're gonna cook?"
"Yep, starting today, I'm learning to cook." Samantha giggled and dragged Alfred towards the market.
Alfred was confused. "Why the sudden urge to cook? Didn't Mr. Gordon set you up with help?"
Samantha shook her head. "Nope! I'm a grown-up now, can't always lean on others. So, I'm diving into cooking."
Hearing this, Alfred thought she was just being impulsive. "What are you planning to cook? I'll help you pick out the stuff."
"Sweet!" Samantha rattled off a list of dishes.
Alfred listened, his eyebrows knitting together. "Why are they all spicy? I thought you were into sweet stuff."
Samantha giggled, putting a finger to her lips. "Alfred, it's a secret. I'm making it for someone else."
Alfred's heart skipped a beat. 'Samantha's cooking for someone else? No wonder she's suddenly into this. Must be for someone special.'
Alfred tried to play it cool. "Who's the lucky person?"
By then, they had reached the shrimp stall.
Samantha ordered two pounds of shrimp. She glanced at Alfred and asked, "Didn't Billy spill the beans?"
Samantha was sharp. Alfred showing up in Elmrest Springs out of the blue, she figured Billy must've said something.
Seeing her ask, Alfred said, "Billy didn't say much, just that you might have a guy you're into, and asked me to check it out."
Alfred only told half the truth. The other half, he definitely couldn't let Samantha know.
"I knew Billy would do that. He's such a pain." Samantha pouted, then tilted her head to look at Alfred. "Alfred, will you rat me out?"
Alfred's eyes flickered. "Nope."
He wouldn't betray Samantha because if that Wesley guy wasn't good, he'd kick him to the curb. And if Wesley was decent, well, they'd see.
"That's more like it." Samantha smiled, satisfied.
Alfred wanted to ask who the guy was. But the market was noisy, so he held back. Since he was here, no rush. He'd meet the guy eventually.
"Here you go." The vendor handed over the shrimp.
Alfred took it for Samantha and got ready to pay. "How much?"
"Alfred, let me handle it." Samantha stopped him and asked the vendor with a smile, "How much?"
The vendor replied, "Thirty bucks."
"Got it." Samantha paid up.
Alfred glanced at her.
These were ingredients for the guy she liked, so naturally, Samantha wouldn't let him pay. She then went on to buy other stuff.
This time, Alfred didn't insist on paying. He just carried the groceries she bought.
After finishing up, they headed back to River View Estate.
"Alfred, where's your luggage?" Samantha suddenly remembered.
Alfred said, "Left it at the hotel."
Samantha frowned, not pleased. "You know my family has a house in Elmrest Springs, why are you crashing at a hotel?"
