Chapter 68 Misfortune
"Anytime."
Nora's expression was impartial as she headed toward her car.
"I'll call Lucas right now and set up a time," Becky implored hurriedly.
"I have work. You sort it out, and I can make it whenever."
Unlocking her car, she slid into the driver's seat.
Driving away, she noticed Becky on her phone.
Despite despising what Becky had done four years ago, Nora was ready to move past it for the three kids she cherished.
She hoped Becky would keep to herself and stay out of her life.
On her drive back, Nora's phone rang.
It was Becky.
"Did you sort it?" she answered.
Becky's voice came through, choked with sobs. "Nora, Lucas refuses to divorce. What should we do?"
Hearing this, Nora pursed her lips, finding Becky's situation pitiful.
Becky had hurt herself in her pursuit of Lucas.
And what was the result?
Anything you can snatch ain't worth much!
"Nora, you must be feeling smug, huh? I went all in for him, but now his heart is back with you. I have nothing left; he's all I have! You aren't ever coming back to him, right? You've already signed the divorce papers; you can't back out now!" Becky sobbed.
Nora replied, "I intend to go through with the divorce."
"You swear?"
"Yes."
With nothing more to say, Nora hung up the phone.
Back at the hospital, lunch break had just ended.
Nora, who had hurried off to the detention center earlier, had skipped her meal. Seated at her desk, she felt her stomach growl and took out a pack of cookies her daughter had stashed in her bag. She tore open the package and started munching.
Suddenly, her phone on the desk buzzed again.
It was a call from Jenny.
Nora answered, and Jenny's anxious voice crackled through the speaker.
"Nora, are you at Central Hospital?"
"Yes, what's up?" Nora took a sip of water before asking.
"Can you come down to the ER right away? One of the actors took a spill on set; he fell from a height. The paramedic says he's got a dislocated bone in his leg and might need surgery. Could you check it out and see if surgery is necessary?"
After hearing this, Nora set down her water cup and responded promptly.
"Alright, I'll be right there."
Ending the call, she looked at Howard, who had just walked in.
"Dr. Hamilton, I need to go to the ER to check on a patient."
Howard furrowed his brow but didn't say much, grunting his acknowledgment sternly.
Meanwhile, Dr. Luna scoffed, "Lunch break's barely over, and you're heading out again? Quite the free spirit."
Nora didn't engage and quickly made her way to the Emergency Room.
Outside the ER, Jenny waved her over. "Nora, over here!"
Approaching the gurney, Nora glanced at the person lying on it and paused in surprise.
Why is it him? Kim?
"Nora, please, check his leg quickly; does he need surgery?"
Jenny urged her on when Nora seemed hesitant.
Snapping back to reality, Nora was about to examine Kim when he suddenly batted her hand away.
"Why is it a female doctor? Don't touch me; I don't want a woman treating me."
A flicker of emotion crossed her eyes. Nora stared at him, taken aback.
He didn't like being touched by female doctors?
Jenny interjected hurriedly, "Kim, this is my best friend. She's an excellent doctor; just let her take a look and tell us if you need surgery."
Kim gave Nora a cursory glance and finally kept quiet.
Jenny tugged at Nora's sleeve, signaling her to proceed.
Carefully, Nora touched the injured area of Kim's leg, feeling his muscles tense up.
After a moment, she withdrew her hand and said, "The bone isn't fundamentally damaged. It's dislocated, but non-surgical treatment will suffice."
On hearing this, the accompanying physician objected, "No surgery for a dislocated bone? Just let it heal on its own?"
Nora replied, "He can undergo acupuncture therapy, but it'll take some time to recover."
"How long?" the agent accompanying Kim inquired.
"About one to two months for a full recovery," Nora said.
Her agent eyed her with evident distrust.
"That's way too long. Kim's in showbiz; we can't afford to wait. Surgery's the better option."
After saying this, he gestured for Nora and Jenny to step aside, urging the attending physician to wheel Kim into the operating room.
Nora watched the OR doors close, lost in thought.
Why was Kim so against a female doctor?
"It's such a pity they didn't want our master healer to treat him. Others would kill for her services," Jenny murmured, her disappointment evident.
Nora chuckled. "It's how it goes. Most people trust doctors more than herbalists."
Jenny pursed her lips, neither agreeing nor disagreeing.
Just then, her phone rang.
She glanced at the screen, frowning, but she answered the call nonetheless.
"Mr. Hawk."
"Jenny, I heard Kim had an accident?" Edric's voice came through with concern.
"Yeah, he just went into surgery," she replied.
"Are you okay?" Edric sounded genuinely worried.
"Mr. Hawk, I'm just a fitness instructor, not an actress. Why wouldn't I be okay?"
There was a brief silence before Edric exclaimed, "You sure you're okay?"
Jenny choked on her words. "Mr. Hawk, are you cursing me? Why would anything be wrong?"
"If something happened to you, I'd be there to take care of you."
Jenny was silent.
"Mr. Hawk, don't get any ideas; I have a boyfriend."
"Really? I like the challenge."
Jenny's expression darkened. "Edric, have you lost your mind?"
She hung up the phone abruptly.
Seeing her friend's annoyed expression, Nora asked curiously, "What's wrong? You seem upset."
"It's Edric. I don't know what he's up to, but he's been pursuing me," Jenny vented.
Nora pictured Edric's charming yet flippant demeanor and couldn't help but laugh.
"Jenny, you've got some luck."
Jenny exhaled heavily and clenched a fist. "I'd love to give him a piece of my mind."
Nora stifled a laugh, then her eyes sparkled with curiosity.
"Jenny, did you and Paul do something?"
Jenny was puzzled. "What do you mean?"
Nora made a kissing gesture with her hands.
Jenny's cheeks flushed red, and she retorted, "Nora, get your mind out of the gutter. Paul said we're waiting until after we're married."
She knew that Jenny and Paul had been living together.
For two years.
Could Paul resist Jenny for two years?
She didn't want to assume anything about Paul, but something felt off.
