Chapter 134 She Scorned It
Nora pursed her lips and said, "I'm sorry, Mrs. Gordon; this is my hometown. I have the freedom to live here, and I won't be leaving."
Mary gazed at her and sneered, "After all is said and done, you just want to marry Aaron! Nora, have you ever considered your status?"
What was her status? A divorcee with children? Did that make her unworthy of respect?
Although Aaron's status was far above average, she was a Master healer herself.
So many wealthy individuals sought her medical attention and treated her with great respect.
She scorned the mere title of Mrs. Gordon of the wealthy Gordon clan!
Nora sneered internally when she heard Mary speak up again.
"Have you been intimate with Aaron? Is this villa a gift from him? Since you've already extracted so much money from Aaron, you should know when to stop and spare everyone the embarrassment!"
Nora found the insinuations laughable. "Mrs. Gordon, please do not slander me. Aaron and I have a strictly professional relationship – doctor and patient. I bought this villa with my own money."
"Your own money? Who are you kidding? You're so young, and with three children, how could you afford such a large house?" Mary wore an expression of disbelief.
Nora couldn't explain, "Believe it or don't. Mrs. Gordon, is there anything else? If not, please leave my home."
Respect is mutual.
Since the other party did not respect her, she wasn't inclined to extend courtesy either.
Mary had a privileged upbringing and had never experienced disrespect from a younger person like this.
Furious, she stood abruptly and scolded, "Nora, you're just like your mother, both utterly classless! I warn you, stay away from Aaron, or you'll regret it!"
She wasn't just threatening her; she had dared to insult her mother.
Nora's grip tightened. "Mrs. Gordon, I'm afraid you'll be disappointed. I like to see things through. Aaron has paid me quite a sum to treat his leg condition, and I have no reason to stop now. Unless he tells me himself that he no longer requires my services!"
"You!" Mary's face was livid.
"Great, just great! Nora, you just wait and see!"
Mary grabbed her purse and stormed out the door, which slammed shut behind her with a resounding thud. She seemed furious.
Nora let out a deep sigh.
As soon as Aaron was done with his treatment, she was going to cut ties with him—no more self-inflicted headaches!
Outside, Mary dialed Suzy's number with a scowl etched on her face. As soon as the call went through, she said, "Suzy, where's your brother? Tell him to start treating Aaron's leg injury starting tomorrow. I'm replacing that woman!"
Hearing this, Suzy replied, "Aunt Mary, you want to replace Nora? But my brother doesn't know acupuncture!"
"What am I supposed to do? I can't have Nora making excuses to stay close to Aaron," Mary fumed.
After a moment, Suzy suggested, "How about this—I know someone skilled in acupuncture. I'll have her treat Aaron."
Mary perked up immediately. "If you know someone, that's even better. It's settled then."
"Okay."
After hanging up, a triumphant smirk spread across Suzy's face. She could tell that Mary was extremely irritated with Nora.
Nora's chances with the Gordons were out of the question.
Now, she'd have Sunny take over Aaron's treatment.
To everyone else, Sunny was Aaron's gal.
Nora would surely step aside and leave Sunny to care for Aaron if she had any self-respect.
Suzy didn't believe for a second that this wouldn't drive Nora away from Aaron.
Nora tried to compose herself and glanced at the time, figuring her three kids should've been up by now.
Why weren't they back yet?
She pulled out her phone and called Alex.
The phone was answered after a few rings.
"Mom."
"Alex, are your siblings awake? I'm at home. You guys should head back," she told him, thinking it best to maintain some distance between herself and Aaron to avoid giving Mrs. Gordon any wrong ideas.
On the other end, Alex glanced at his sister, who was clinging to Aaron, unwilling to leave. "Mom, sis says it's still early—they want to wait for you to pick us up."
Why hadn't Mom invited Mr. Gordon to dinner?
"I'm busy; I can't make it. Just bring your brother and sister back," Nora said.
Alex's dark eyes flickered. "Then, can I invite Mr. Gordon and Noe to dinner with us?"
After a brief silence, Nora agreed, "Okay."
It was Mrs. Gordon who had irked her, not Aaron.
She had moved, and Aaron had been a big help; it was only right to invite him for dinner.
"Now, it's still early for dinner, and Mr. Gordon is probably busy," Nora cautioned. "Invite him, sure, but don't insist. Let him come over for dinner after he finishes his work."
Secretly, she hoped Aaron would arrive just in time for dinner, eat, and then leave.
"Got it," said Alex, hanging up the phone and walking to Aaron.
"Mr. Gordon, mom called. She wants us to head back," Alex told him.
Aaron raised an eyebrow. "She's not coming over?"
"She's tied up. She asked us to invite you and Noe for dinner. If you're busy, you can join us later," Alex relayed Nora's message.
Aaron's lips curved into a smile. "I'm not busy."
Even if he was, he could always work from her place.
So Aaron and Noe returned to Nora's villa with the three kids in tow.
As the door opened, the children burst in, cheerfully calling out for their mom.
Nora's lips curled into a smile as she told the kids to play, and she headed to the kitchen.
Aaron, noticing something was off with her, wheeled himself in after her.
In the kitchen, Ember had already arrived and was washing vegetables.
Upon seeing Aaron, she quickly greeted him with due respect.
Aaron nodded slightly, then turned to Nora.
"Nora, what are we cooking today? I can help you chop onions," he offered.
Nora looked somewhat distant. "No need, Mr. Gordon. You're a guest, and besides, you're not well. Just sit back and wait for dinner."
Aaron narrowed his dark eyes thoughtfully.
He thought she might still be annoyed over the horror movie, so he wanted to chat and tease her.
But while she spoke, her demeanor was cold and distant.
Could she still hold a grudge because of the horror movie he had shown her?
Then, footsteps approached from behind.
Jenny and Paul had arrived.
"Nora, we're here," Jenny greeted with a smile.
"Welcome!" Nora responded with a chuckle.
Aaron swallowed the words he had been about to say, and his expression returned to its usual cool detachment.
"Mr. Gordon is here too!" Jenny exclaimed in surprise, seeing Aaron in the kitchen.
He nodded slightly and remained silent.
"Mr. Gordon, I'm Paul. I've heard a lot about you," Paul said, extending his hand toward Aaron with a focused look.
Out of politeness, Aaron reached out and shook his hand.
Nora watched Paul carefully, noticing a spark in his eyes as he looked at Aaron.
But she couldn't decipher its meaning.
