Chapter 53 She crawled into his bed at midnight
<Chapter>Chapter 53 Stay(3) </Chapter>
Hearing Nora’s request, Jack smiled, "Finally decided to buy a house?"
Nora gave a slight smile, "Yeah, the kids are growing up, and they need a better learning environment. Plus, I think the money I've made these past few years should be enough for a nice villa."
After returning to the States, she had been living in the house left to her by her grandmother.
There had been no real issues.
After the incident where Martha hired a hitman, Nora felt the need to move somewhere safer sooner rather than later.
She could get by with less, but her child's safety was her top priority.
"I told you to buy a house a long time ago, and I'd help with the money if you needed it. But you didn’t want it," Jack said.
Nora just smiled, staying silent.
She firmly believed that even with the closest of friends, it was better not to mix money into the relationship. She didn't want to be in debt to anyone.
The elevator quickly descended to the ground floor, where a crowd waited to board.
Jack wrapped his arm around Nora's shoulders, shielding her from the pressing crowd.
Not far off, Noe held a payment slip, his expression showed surprise.
"Nora?" he called out.
When Nora saw it was Noe, she smiled and greeted, "Hi, Noe."
Noe glanced at Jack, asking, "Nora, what are you two up to?"
"We're here visiting someone in the hospital. What about you?" asked Nora.
"Same here."
"We'll get going then."
"Alright."
Noe nodded thoughtfully as he watched them leave, then pulled out his phone and dialed Aaron's number.
Aaron picked up promptly.
"Mr. Gordon," Noe reported, "There's been an issue at the company—a project fell through again. Director Kevin, who's quite close to you, was furious and got into a scuffle with Jackson. He's hurt his head and I've just brought him to the hospital."
After a brief pause, Noe continued, "Mr. Gordon, there's a board meeting scheduled for tomorrow. There are two prevailing opinions: some want Jackson to take over the company immediately, while others are waiting for your input. Your thoughts?"
"I'll be there tomorrow," came Aaron's reply.
Relief washed over Noe. "Understood, Mr. Gordon. Oh, and by the way, I saw Nora at the hospital. She was with a man, and they appeared to be quite close."
On the other end of the line, Aaron asked, "Is that man polished, wearing glasses?"
"Yes."
"Got it."
Aaron hung up, his handsome face set in a dour expression.
Nora had been out this long with Jack? Was she looking to rekindle an old flame, to start something new with her childhood friend?
"Aaron, are you thirsty? Want me to send someone to get you a drink?" Suzy walked into the courtyard, noticing Aaron had finished his call and offered her help.
Really, how could Aaron stand a place like this? There were no amenities, no entertainment.
Seeing his siblings in front of him only added to Aaron's frustration.
"Suzy, Howard, you both should head home now."
If it weren't for the two of them taking it upon themselves to come here and look after him, Nora would've never left home without a second thought.
"Aaron, I'm here with you," Suzy said gently.
"I don't need it. Also, don't bother coming tomorrow, I'll be at the office," Aaron responded.
Suzy and Howard exchanged a quick, surprised glance.
"Aaron, you've decided to go back to work?" Suzy inquired.
"I'll pop into the office tomorrow, let everyone know I'm not dead yet, then I'll continue my treatment here until I'm fully recovered," Aaron declared.
Suzy's smile faltered, "Aaron, this place is subpar. Why don't you go back and let my brother's team treat you?"
"No need, I like the quiet here. You guys better head out," Aaron urged them to leave.
Suzy caught the impatient expression on his face, her eyes flickered with intrigue.
Why was he so adamant about staying here for his recovery?
Was it possibly because he couldn't bear to be away from Nora?
In a high-end Chinese restaurant.
Jack and Nora sat by the window, digging into their meal.
Starved, Nora quickly devoured her meal.
"Eat slower, Nora. You might choke," Jack cautioned tenderly.
"Make sure you eat too, Jack," Nora said, offering him a bite with her chopsticks.
Jack ate the piece she'd given him, his eyes soft with affection.
"Nora, now that Aaron's people have come, you can step back. How about you come and help out in my lab?" he suggested.
He knew about Noe's identity and that Aaron's people were now looking after him at her house.
Nora paused to take a sip of soup and then nodded in agreement.
"That sounds good."
With Aaron well-attended, she didn't need to be distracted.
Besides, his treatment only required her attention in the evenings.
She was about to spend a fortune on a big house, which would leave her savings nearly depleted.
She needed to make money, and fast - for the sake of raising her child.
"Great. Nora, how about you replace me at Central Hospital tomorrow and wrap up my research project?" Jack proposed.
Nora nodded, "Sure, send me the details when you get back."
"Will do."
They continued with their meal, and after a while, Nora got up to visit the restroom.
That was when her phone started to ring.
She glanced at the string of numbers feeling a vague sense of familiarity.
It was Aaron's number!
Nora remembered it and answered the call.
"Hello?"
"It's me, Aaron."
Aaron's voice was deep and resonant, distinctly magnetic.
Nora blinked, "What's up?"
"Nora, come on, I paid for your services. Shouldn't you be putting a little more care into your patient?"
The displeasure in Aaron's voice crackled through the phone call.
Was this his way of showing discontent for her lengthy absence?
With an arch of her eyebrow, Nora retorted, "Mr. Gordon, like you said, you paid for a consultation, not for my personal time. My responsibility is to ensure your recovery."
There was a brief silence on the other end before he replied, "Fine, I'll throw in an extra ten million to have your undivided care. I want you back here, now."
Nora's eyes narrowed slightly. "Mr. Gordon, don't you have someone taking care of you already?"
He was willing to pay an additional ten million just for her personal nursing care? Did his money just burn a hole in his pocket?
"Not anymore," the man's voice still sounded as appealing as ever.
Nora could detect a touch of discomfort and an almost imperceptible hint of dependency in his tone. Her heart softened for a moment, but then she remembered who he was, and she pressed her lips together.
"Sorry, but no, Mr. Gordon. I'm a doctor, and I'll take payment for medical treatments, but nursing isn't my specialty. I'm not offering that service!"
After she healed him, they would once again be strangers. There was no need to deepen any emotional ties!
With that, Nora ended the call.
On the other end, Aaron stared at the darkened screen of his phone, his lips slightly pursed in visible annoyance.
She refused to nurse him? Why? Did it interfere with her dating time?
