Chapter 1011 Taking Them Home
Walter felt awkward and glanced at Maiken, who was struggling to sit up in bed. Seeing her pale and lifeless face, he couldn't help but feel dazed.
He remembered how she looked when they first met—beautiful and full of energy.'How hasshe become so thin and gets old in just a few years?'
Young women in Vistalia were mostly beautiful, but their social status was low.
Vistalia's economy was weak, and surrogacy became a major industry. Wealthy people from abroad would come to find surrogates to have beautiful children. In Vistalia, surrogacy was legal.
Walter didn't regret taking Maiken in. She had willingly slept with him, and he was secretly pleased. He had always admired her beauty but hadn't acted on it because of his status. When she made the first move, he went along with it.
His wife Astrid hadn't conceived in years, but Maiken got pregnant within two months. This made Walter even happier.
Maiken gave birth to a beautiful boy. If things hadn't gone wrong, he would have pampered her. Walter didn't know why she cheat on him.
"Mr. Rochet, you finally came to see me," Maiken said, struggling to speak.
Walter snapped out of his thoughts and looked at her.
Maiken told Alfred, "Alfred, bring a chair for your father."
Alfred silently moved a bench over, still holding half a chicken leg. The grease smeared on the bench. Walter frowned but said nothing.
Maiken leaned over to wipe the bench with her sleeve. "Alright, Mr. Rochet, you can sit now."
Nora, standing nearby, watched with interest. She whispered to Aaron, "Did Samantha tell you about Alfred's situation?"
Aaron nodded.
Nora asked, "Do you know what Alfred and Maiken are to Walter?"
Aaron replied, "It's a long story. Basically, Maiken is his mistress, and Alfred is their illegitimate child."
Nora had guessed as much from Astrid's attitude towards Alfred. If it weren't for this relationship, Astrid wouldn't despise Alfred so much.
"Maiken doesn't look like she's from around here," Nora said.
"Yeah, she's from Vistalia," Aaron replied.
"Weren't they at war a few years ago?" Nora asked.
"Yes, so she fled here and was taken in by Walter," Aaron said.
Nora understood. "And then Walter took a liking to her?"
Aaron shook his head. "No, she initiated it."
Nora was surprised. She had felt sympathetic towards Maiken, thinking she was a war refugee. But hearing that Maiken had made the first move, Nora's opinion changed.
Nora thought, 'No matter how tough life gets, a woman should have self-respect and self-love. How could Maiken wreck someone else's family?'
"If Walter slept with Maiken, why didn't he take care of her and Alfred? Why let them live in such a dump?" Nora asked.
Aaron coughed. "According to Hugo, Maiken cheated on Walter while he was on a business trip."
Nora was stunned. 'Maiken's that kind of woman? Really?'
By the bed, Maiken looked weak and respectful, while Walter seemed indifferent. Nora didn't know what to say. Men hate being cheated on, so maybe that's why Walter put Maiken and Alfred here.
Nora glanced at Alfred, who stood straight next to Walter, still clutching that half-eaten chicken leg. Remembering how Alfred was almost drowned by Juan, she felt sympathy. Alfred was innocent. Walter shouldn't punish him for Maiken's mistakes.
Suddenly, Maiken got agitated. She struggled to kneel on the bed, begging Walter. Alfred, with red-rimmed eyes, tried to stop her, saying something. Walter frowned but stayed silent.
"Hugo, what are they saying?" Aaron and Nora asked.
Hugo sighed. "Maiken's saying she didn't cheat; she was framed. She says it doesn't matter if Walter doesn't trust her, but Alfred is innocent. She wants Walter to give Alfred a good life and take him away from here. But Alfred says he doesn't want to leave her; he just wants to stay here."
Aaron and Nora fell silent. Samantha suddenly started crying. "Alfred is so pitiful. Is Walter his daddy?"
Nora patted her head. "Yes."
"His daddy is so cruel," Samantha said, then ran over with her short legs.
"Walter, why do you let Alfred and Maiken live in such a broken place? Your family is rich! If you don't have room for them, I'll ask my parents to take them in," Samantha added.
Nora and Aaron were speechless. Samantha, don't get so involved in other people's family affairs.
"What is she saying?" Walter asked Hugo.
Hugo translated. Walter glanced at Aaron and Nora, feeling a bit embarrassed.
Nora walked over and hugged Samantha. She told Walter, "Mr. Rochet, this place is unlivable. If they stay here, Maiken's health might not hold up. No matter the hatred, Maiken did give birth to your child. For the child's sake, if you don't want to see her, give her some money and let her leave and return to Vistalia."
Nora wasn't selfless, but seeing Maiken's haggard appearance, she could imagine the suffering. Mistakes should be punished, but there should be an end to it.
