Chapter 987 Delivering Warmth
"Yeah, Johnnie said he's just seeing how things go with her, so he's not sure about their future." Randy chimed in, "She doesn't seem like the type to settle down. She might move on soon."
Susan looked concerned. "If that's the case, Johnnie's in a tough spot."
"People don't realize what they have until it's gone," Randy said.
Susan smiled. "It's never too late to fix things."
Randy and Vilma got her point and agreed.
Just then, Johnnie and Gabriella came back with food.
"Hey Johnnie, you're back," Susan greeted.
"Susan, you're off work," Johnnie nodded.
"Yeah, I thought Vilma might be awake, so I came to check on her," Susan said.
Johnnie nodded and put the food on the table.
"Susan, join us for dinner," Randy invited.
"No, you guys eat. I have an early shift tomorrow. I'll bring some soup for Vilma," Susan said.
"Oh, Susan, that's too much trouble," Vilma said.
"It's no trouble. Homemade soup is better than store-bought," Susan replied.
"Susan's such a good girl. Whoever marries her will be lucky," Vilma hinted.
Susan smiled. "I'll head out now. Enjoy your meal."
With Randy and Vilma's support, Susan knew not to overstay her welcome.
She left gracefully, looking generous.
Gabriella watched the whole thing but didn't care. She only focused on Johnnie's attitude towards her, and so far, she was satisfied.
After dinner, Johnnie noticed Randy looked tired. "Dad, I'll stay with Mom tonight. I'll book a hotel room for you to rest and come back in the morning."
Randy, being older, couldn't handle late nights, and Johnnie worried about his health.
Randy thought for a moment and nodded. "Alright, your mom just had surgery. The first day is crucial. It'll be tough for you tonight."
"Okay."
Johnnie glanced at Gabriella. "You must be tired too. I'll book a room for you at the hotel."
Gabriella was mentally exhausted but said, "It's okay, I'll stay with you."
"Ms. Costa is a guest. You shouldn't stay up all night. Listen to Johnnie and go to the hotel," Randy said.
Since Randy insisted, Gabriella agreed. "Alright."
Johnnie booked two rooms at a nearby hotel. "It's done. You can go now."
"Thanks for taking care of your mom tonight." Randy patted Johnnie's shoulder, said a few words to Vilma, and left.
"I'll be going too. Don't miss me," Gabriella said with a smile to Johnnie.
Johnnie smiled and saw them out.
Randy and Gabriella took a cab to the hotel.
In his room, Randy thought for a moment and called Susan.
Susan picked up quickly. "Hey, Randy. Everything okay with Vilma?"
"Yeah, she's fine," Randy chuckled. "It's just that Johnnie's staying at the hospital alone tonight. I'm worried he might get hungry. If you have time, could you bring him some supper?"
He had sent Gabriella away to give Susan and Johnnie a chance to bond.
"Johnnie's alone at the hospital? Ms. Costa isn't with him?" Susan asked.
"She's just a guest, not family. It's not her place to stay up all night, so I sent her to the hotel," Randy explained.
Susan got the hint. "Okay, I'll make something and bring it to Johnnie."
"I knew you were the most considerate," Randy praised before hanging up.
Susan smiled at her phone. Nighttime was perfect for deepening connections. She decided to make some vegetable pancakes and cookies, then added pizza to the mix. Satisfied with her efforts, she packed the food and saw it was almost 9 PM. She changed into a dress, put on light makeup, and drove to the hospital.
In the ward, Johnnie was chatting with Vilma, who kept steering the conversation towards his love life, but he gently deflected. Susan walked in.
"Vilma, Johnnie."
Vilma was surprised. "Susan, didn't you go home? Why are you back?"
Susan placed the food containers on the table. "Randy said Johnnie's staying here tonight. I was worried he might get hungry, so I made some supper and brought it over."
"Susan is always so thoughtful," Vilma praised.
Johnnie knew Randy had asked Susan to come. "Susan, I don't usually eat supper. You should take it back."
Susan smiled. "Johnnie, I made some vegetable pancakes, cookies, and pizza pockets. They're all light, so eating a little at night won't hurt."
Refusing again would seem ungrateful. Johnnie pressed his lips together and said nothing.
Vilma said, "Johnnie, see how considerate Susan is? You should thank her."
"Thank you," Johnnie said.
"You're welcome. Eat if you get hungry."
"Okay."
The room fell silent. Vilma suggested, "Johnnie, I'm fine now. Why don't you go chat with Susan for a while?"
Johnnie thought it was a good idea. He needed to clarify some things with Susan. "Susan, let's go talk."
"Sure," Susan said eagerly.
They left the ward and took the elevator to the first floor. The May and June nights were pleasant. Susan, in a mid-sleeve dress, shivered slightly in the evening breeze. Johnnie noticed and draped his jacket over her shoulders.
