Chapter 61: The coddled Dad
Howard smirked to himself upon hearing the nurses' gossip.
This Nora certainly had a way with men.
Despite having an affair and bearing three children, she had her husband still pining for her.
Halting mid-stride, something occurred to Howard, and he immediately took out his phone to call Suzy.
At that moment, Suzy was in the CEO's office at the Gordon Group. She was talking to Mary, who had just arrived, when her phone rang.
"Excuse me, Mrs. Gordon, I need to take this call," she said, then stepped out of the CEO's office.
"Howard," she answered.
"Suzy, where are you now?" Howard asked.
"I'm still at the Gordon Group with Aaron, what's up?" Suzy found a quiet spot and responded.
"Just checking in, do you really not need me to treat Aaron? Nora has started working in our research group. Has she finished treating Aaron's illness?"
Surprised by his question, Suzy's voice reflected her curiosity, "She's working at Central Hospital?"
"Yeah, she seems quite capable."
Howard said sarcastically, "Just overheard a nurse saying that her husband Lucas punched his current girlfriend. I don't get what's going on in his head. His wife cheats, has three kids, and he doesn't even seem bothered by it?"
Suzy's thoughts turned to Nora's ethereal beauty, sparking a twinge of envy.
"Nora's pretty showy, alright. You've seen how Aaron can't seem to take his eyes off her, haven't you?"
"That's not okay. Suzy, you need to keep Aaron away from her," Howard reminded her.
"Yeah, I'll ask Aaron later whether he's planning to return there or not," said Suzy.
"Good. If he's not going back, I'll carve out a new therapy plan for him."
"Sure."
After hanging up, Suzy smoothed out the stray strands of hair by her ears and walked up to the CEO's office, ready to push the door open.
Inside, she heard Mary's voice.
"Aaron, since you're still planning on going to that suburb for treatment, why not have Suzy look after you? You've been so busy with work and haven't had time for her. This could be the perfect opportunity to foster a deeper bond."
Suzy's heart skipped a beat, her ears perked up with urgency.
If Aaron intended to continue his treatment with Nora, would he listen to his mother and let her take care of him?
"Mom, I've told you before, Suzy is like a sister to me—I have no intention of marrying her!" Aaron's voice, deep and magnetic, tightened Suzy's grip on the doorknob.
He views her as a sister.
He doesn't want to marry her?
"You're being stubborn. Our families have a great relationship, and Suzy once saved your life. We're both quite content with this engagement," his mother insisted.
"Mom, I don't want to marry just for the sake of it."
"But..."
"That's enough, Mom," Aaron interrupted, clearly losing his patience.
Outside, Suzy's face was pale.
Why didn't he like her?
She had waited years for him, seen by everyone as Aaron's future wife.
And yet, he only saw her as a sister?
Was it not her he desired, then who?
Nora's face abruptly invaded her thoughts.
Aaron's gaze upon Nora was undoubtedly different.
Could it be that he fancied someone like Nora?
A fierce glint flashed in Suzy's eyes.
She steadied her emotions and walked in as if nothing had happened.
In the office, Aaron wrapped up a pile of work and glanced at the clock.
"Mom, it's time for you to head back; I should get going too."
Mary frowned with displeasure, "Aaron, do you really have to trek all the way to that suburb for treatment? Why not have the doctor visit our home instead? We can easily afford the extra cost."
"No need, it's peaceful there—a good place for rest and recovery. Noe, let's go," said Aaron as he rolled his wheelchair towards the doorway.
Noe came in from outside when he heard his name called and moved to push the wheelchair.
"Ma’am, I'll accompany Mr. Gordon and leave first," he said.
"Noe, make sure you keep Aaron safe, don't let anything else happen to him," insisted Mary with a tone of unease.
Suzy didn't speak, but stood quietly by Mary's side.
Only after watching Aaron's car drive away did she turn to Mary and say, "Mrs. Gordon, remember the massage device from that famous international brand I endorsed a while ago? It works wonders for the neck and shoulders. You've mentioned having discomfort there before. I'll have someone send it to your place, and you can use it while watching TV."
Mary patted Suzy's hand, appearing quite pleased. "You're such a thoughtful girl."
Suzy managed a brittle smile as her eyes rimmed with red.
Seeing this change, Mary's expression softened with concern. "Suzy, what's wrong? What happened?"
Through her tears, Suzy confided, "Mrs. Gordon, I overheard your conversation with Aaron. I'd been dreaming that if I married Aaron, we'd become the best of mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. It seems I was just kidding myself."
Hearing this, Mary quickly reassured her, "Suzy, you mustn't give up on Aaron so easily. Once he's recovered, I'll make sure he gets engaged to you."
Engaged to her? Suzy's heart soared, though she kept her composure. "Mrs. Gordon, it's useless. Aaron won't agree."
"Aaron may be stubborn, but I'm his mother, and with our family's ties, he won't have a say in the matter," Mary said assertively.
Suzy felt secretly thrilled. This was exactly the response she was hoping for. With Mary advocating for her, she had a chance to marry into the prestigious Gordon family!
Meanwhile, Noe, with extreme caution, helped Aaron into the car, and then wiped the sweat from his brow before taking the driver's seat. It was no easy task moving the tall and robust CEO. He had genuine admiration for Nora, who had managed to take good care of their boss all by herself.
"Mr. Gordon, are we heading to Nora's place now?" Noe asked.
Aaron paused from booting up his laptop, glancing out through the car window at the passing scenery.
"Go to Central Hospital," he instructed. A route passing by Central Hospital could also lead them to Nora's place.
The hospital.
After tidying up her data, Nora glanced at the clock and realized it was time to pick up her child. She stood up, preparing to leave for the day.
Howard, seeing her leaving, frowned with discontent. "It's not quitting time yet. Heading out early?"
Nora responded, "Dr. Hamilton, I've finished my tasks for today. If there are any further instructions, please email them to me. I can attend to them this evening."
Dr. Luna, who was nearby, chimed in, her tone cool and detached, "Oh, hurrying off for a hot date?"
Nora just smiled, not bothering to engage, and walked out of the office.
Dr. Luna, pursing her lips and pondering the rumors she'd heard, thought to herself, How did Jack manage to find such a stunning Assistant? Could it be that she's charmed him?
Outside, Nora exited the main doors of the hospital and headed towards the parking lot.
A person approached her and handed her a large bouquet.
