Chapter 972 Cried Twice for a Man
Johnnie shot her a cold look, said nothing, and stormed off.
His tall frame radiated pure anger.
Gabriella watched him leave, took a couple of steps forward, then stopped herself.
She glanced at her hand, remembering the slap she gave him, and chuckled.
She should feel satisfied for finally standing up for herself. Johnnie deserved it for cursing at her.
But a constricting band of tension tightened around her throat, making even the simplest swallow a painful effort.
Her face felt cool. She touched it and realized she was crying.
She hadn't cried in years, and now twice because of Johnnie!
'I am so pathetic. How do I get so lovesick?' she thought.
A guy approached her. "Fight with your boyfriend? Need a new one?"
Gabriella glared. "Get lost!"
He sneered. "No wonder men don't want you. You deserve to be alone!"
Her heart ached. Was it true no one wanted her?
No, she never wanted Johnnie!
She wiped her tears and left the bar.
The evening was quiet, less noisy.
She stared at the city lights, the wind clearing her head.
Taking a deep breath, she tried to calm down and hail a cab.
But her hand was empty. Where was her phone?
It was gone!
She rushed back to the bar to look for it.
No luck. The waiter hadn't seen it either.
She slumped in a chair, cursing Johnnie in her mind, 'Johnnie, you're such bad luck.'
She borrowed a phone to call hers. It was off.
Someone had taken it.
She asked the bar manager to check the surveillance footage. He said she needed to call the police.
Thinking of the important info on her phone, she agreed and called the police.
They arrived quickly.
The footage showed her phone falling when Elijah pulled her away. A man picked it up.
The police identified him and found him just leaving the restroom.
Seeing them, he quickly handed over the phone. "I didn't mean to take it. I was going to return it, but she left. I planned to give it to the police tomorrow."
Clearly lying. If he wanted to return it, he should've given it to the bar staff, not kept it.
Gabriella sneered but didn't push it since she got her phone back.
However, the screen was cracked.
Gabriella frowned. "Did you break my phone?"
"Hey, don't blame me. It was already broken when I picked it up," the man said, quickly leaving before she could hold him responsible.
"We're done here, right?" the police asked, seeing the phone returned.
Gabriella thanked them and tried to turn on her phone, but it wouldn't power up. She didn't know if it was out of battery or just broken.
Frustrated, she cursed Johnnie in her mind and headed back to the hotel. She plugged in her phone, waited a bit, and tried again. Still nothing. It seemed broken.
"Stupid phone!" she muttered, tossing it aside.
Johnnie's cold face flashed in her mind, and she pounded the bed in frustration. "Johnnie, you're a jinx!"
Meanwhile, Johnnie sneezed and spent the night in a room Aaron had arranged for him.
The next day, Mateo was heading back to Hchilia. Aaron and Nora went to see him off.
"Nora, take care of yourself," Mateo said.
"I will," Nora smiled.
Mateo turned to Aaron, less warmly. "You better take care of her. Don't let her get hurt again."
Aaron, holding Nora, replied calmly, "Your warning is unnecessary. Just take care of yourself."
They had set a trap, letting Johnnie leak fake confidential documents. If all went well, Gabriella would send them to Rafael. If Rafael had bad intentions, he'd be in trouble.
Once Rafael realized he'd been tricked, he wouldn't let it go. This would likely lead to a struggle within the Hchilia Royal family. Mateo's success or failure would depend on his own abilities.
"Nora, if I encounter danger, will you come to help me?" Mateo asked, understanding Aaron's implication.
Nora wanted to say "of course," but Aaron spoke first. "I hope that day never comes, or I'll think less of you."
Mateo glared at him. "You shut up. I want to hear from Nora."
Nora laughed. "Of course."
Satisfied, Mateo opened his arms for a hug. Aaron stepped in, blocking Nora. Mateo hugged him instead, sneering. "I knew it would be like this."
Despite his complaints, Mateo didn't let go of Aaron. He patted Aaron's back. "I'm leaving."
"Take care," Aaron said.
Mateo's companions were waiting inside. He stood up straight, waved to them, and went through security.
Once he was out of sight, Aaron put his arm around Nora. "Let's go."
"Okay."
Everything had settled, and Mateo's trip ended smoothly. The outcome was good, but there was still a bit of regret.
Nora looked at Johnnie's calm face, wondering if he and Gabriella were really over. 'Would there be a twist? Would Gabriella ultimately not steal the documents?'
But that was just wishful thinking. Gabriella had indeed stolen the documents and sent them to Rafael.
At this moment, Gabriella lay on the hotel bed with a splitting headache. She had been in bed all day, hadn't eaten, and didn't want to do anything. She felt completely drained.
