Chapter 27 You sleep with us
Upon hearing Jenny's words, Nora was thrilled.
"Jenny, are you serious? They really got rid of that ridiculous rule?"
"Cross my heart," Jenny replied, clearly excited.
"Thank goodness!"
A weight was lifted off Nora's shoulders, and she could hardly believe her good fortune.
"Jenny, how did they suddenly cancel such a rule? It's like a dream come true."
"Who knows? Maybe some new guy decided to shake things up after realizing how nonsensical it was."
"Yeah, that could be it." Nora wholeheartedly agreed.
After a bit more small talk, Jenny mentioned she was about to go register the three little ones.
Nora thanked her and ended the call.
Watching her three kids play around Aaron outside, she stepped out with a smile.
"Alex, Billy, Samantha, I’ve got some great news."
"Mommy, what's up?" Samantha inquired, gazing up at her.
"In a few days, you'll be attending one of Houston's top private schools."
Nora gently caressed Samantha’s rosy cheeks, beaming with joy.
"Is that the news?" Billy glanced at Alex, not nearly as excited.
Alex's expression was lukewarm at best.
"What's wrong? Isn’t this good news?" Nora asked.
"Mommy, can we skip preschool? With our smarts, we don't need it," asked Alex, frowning slightly.
"Yeah, Mommy, it’s really boring to spend time with toddlers," Billy chimed in.
Suppressing a laugh, Nora stroked her daughter’s soft hair. "I know you two are bright, but don’t forget your sister. You need to support her as she starts school."
Hearing this, both Alex and Billy cast a look of undisguised disdain towards Samantha.
Pouting, Samantha snuggled into Nora.
"Humph, picking on me again? You two weirdos might not make any new friends there, but watch me—I'll be making plenty!" she declared confidently.
Alex and Billy pursed their lips and said in unison, "As if we care!"
Nora chuckled internally, feigning annoyance, "Alright, no ganging up on your sister. The private preschool offers special programs that regular ones don’t, perfect for showcasing your talents."
The twins certainly didn't mean to disdain their sister, and obediently acknowledged her request.
Aaron, seated in his wheelchair, listened in on the conversation between the four individuals.
It seemed his dear brother had already taken care of the preschool situation for him?
It was a pity that he still had to be an unsung hero.
"Nora, you seem overjoyed. Did the kids have trouble getting into Houston's best preschool before?"
Hearing his question, Nora nodded.
"Yes, I don't know who made up the rule, but the school only accepted kids from complete families. Just got the news that they've dropped that ridiculous policy. I'm so thankful!"
Aaron's lips curled into a knowing smile, "Looks like you've found yourself a guardian angel."
Blinking, Nora responded, "Guardian angel? Who could that be for me?"
Aaron raised an eyebrow, "Who's the new addition to your household?"
Nora paused, catching his hint, and couldn't help but laugh.
"Thomas, are you slyly suggesting that you're my guardian angel?"
"Exactly, I am your guardian angel. With me around, you and the kids will always be lucky."
The handsome contours of the man's face were strikingly illuminated by the sunlight.
Nora's heart fluttered.
She casually tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear to hide her emotion.
"You sure know how to sing your own praises, calling yourself a guardian angel. I'd be grateful if you could just give me less trouble."
It wasn't the first time she had seen this man, but just then, she realized that he was exceptionally attractive.
"Enough chit-chat, I need to make dinner."
She hurried off, a clear indication she was fleeing from something.
Had her face turned red just now?
Why would she blush?
At the Smith residence.
Becky, with a red mark on her face, wept in Martha's arms.
"Mom, Nora, that wretch, is deliberately not divorcing Lucas, just to torment me, and she humiliated me in front of everyone. I don't want to live anymore!"
Martha was heartbroken and continuously consoled her.
"Don't cry, my dear. Mom will find a way to get justice for you."
"I want her to divorce him, I want her to divorce Lucas immediately!" sobbed Becky.
"There, there, we'll make sure she divorces Lucas," Martha soothed, finally calming her down.
At that moment, Charles returned.
"Martha, why the rush to call me back? Didn't you know the company just faced some complications, and I'm swamped dealing with it?"
He was still trying to manage the fallout from Mick pulling out of their deal.
Martha stood to help him out of his coat.
"Charles, just look at our poor daughter. Nora's almost driven her to not want to live."
Hearing those words, Charles looked over at Becky, whose makeup was streaked across her face from crying, and his brows immediately furrowed in displeasure.
"What on earth happened? Look at your face, it's a mess. Go wash up now."
"Dad, it’s Nora...she won't sign the divorce papers and then...then in front of everyone, she hit me and shamed our family. She called you an ungrateful wretch and said Mom and I were just mistresses clawing our way to the top. How...how can I live normally after being pointed at and ridiculed?"
Becky sobbed, her voice laced with exaggerated grief.
Charles's face darkened, "Did she really say that?"
"Yes!" Becky sobbed even harder.
Martha's eyes shifted cunningly as she found the perfect moment to chime in.
"Charles, Nora's behavior is just outrageous. Ever since she came back, she's turned this house upside down. Her insulting us is one thing, but how could she dare to insult you?"
"And above all, she met with Mick just once and it's already affecting our business deals. Doesn't she know how much effort and care you've put into the company?"
The one thing Charles valued most was the success of his company. Martha's words, fanning the flames of his anger, made his temper flare uncontrollably.
"That rebellious girl, she's really turned the world upside down! Give me her phone number; I'll call her myself!"
"All right."
Martha feigned a smile of victory and didn't forget to offer a pretense of advice.
"Charles, try to speak calmly to her, there's no need for bad blood. Doesn't Becky just want a proper status? As long as she agrees to the divorce, we'd be willing to make amends, right?"
A cold smile crossed Charles's face, "Make amends? What for? I'm her father; she should do what I say, no questions asked. I've raised her all these years; let's see her try to defy me now."
Martha and Becky exchanged a look, a sly gleam in their eyes.
With Charles taking the lead, Nora would surely have no choice but to fall in line!
Meanwhile, Nora had just finished preparing a dish.
Her phone rang, and she glanced at the screen.
Although the caller ID wasn't saved, she recognized it as Charles's number.
Her face paled slightly as she answered the call.
"Dad."
"So, you do remember I'm your father? What do you think I've been doing all these years? You disappear without a word and the moment you're back, you throw everything into chaos. Are you going to divorce Lucas or not? If you don't, just wait and see how I deal with you!”
