Chapter 834 Planning to Raise Her as a Heir
Millie's lower lip trembled as she fixed him with a blank stare, her eyes welling up with unshed tears.
Hugo looked at Jasmine and said, "Jasmine, aren't you going to comfort your niece?"
Jasmine understood and quickly hugged Millie, comforting, "Don't cry, honey. If you cry, your mommy in heaven will be sad too. You're a good girl, and you wouldn't want to make your mommy sad, right?"
Millie took in her words and sniffled, "But I miss Mommy."
"Okay, okay, I know. From now on, I will love you just like your mommy did," Jasmine comforted her.
Millie sobbed, looking at Jasmine's face, which was identical to Emmeline's. Finally, she stopped crying out for her mom.
Seeing this, Hugo breathed a sigh of relief, saying, "Let's eat."
Aisha served him some soup, and they began to eat.
Behind them, a maid named Amara Silva, who was responsible for Aisha's daily care, had her phone constantly vibrating.
She took a moment in the kitchen to check her phone and saw a message from Ellie.
Ellie was asking if Millie was there.
Amara instinctively glanced towards the dining room, hesitated for a moment, and replied with a yes.
Emmeline had always been kind to the servants, and Millie had grown up under her watch.
She had heard that after Emmeline's death, Millie was adopted by people from Chrisland. But why was Millie suddenly back in Hchilia now?
And Millie didn't seem to be here willingly; it looked more like she had been tricked.
Now Hugo had even found someone who looked exactly like Emmeline to take care of Millie. What was Hugo planning?
On the other end, Nora and her group were waiting for news.
When Amara replied, Ellie quickly showed it to James.
James was a bit excited and said to Nora, "Millie is indeed at Hugo's house."
Nora said, "Ms. Reed, could you ask your friend how Millie is doing?"
Ellie quickly typed a line and soon got a reply.
Amara: [Not very well. Millie has been crying and asking to go home. But just now, Hugo brought someone who looks exactly like Emmeline to take care of Millie, saying that the woman is Emmeline's sister. Millie was comforted and is now eating.]
Seeing this message, James reacted strongly.
"What sister? Emmeline was an orphan; she didn't have a sister!"
He spoke in a language that Nora could understand.
"James, what do you mean?" Ellie asked.
James translated the message and then said, "That woman can't be Emmeline's sister; she must be someone Hugo found to impersonate her."
Nora frowned slightly and said, "Hugo is well-prepared. He knew Millie would cry when she got here, so he found someone who looks like Emmeline to comfort her in advance."
"Millie is still young. Seeing a woman who looks like her mother would naturally make her feel dependent. Over time, she will forget everything about Chrisland and adapt to life here."
This Hugo was indeed very shrewd!
"Dr. Smith, what should we do now? I can't just watch Millie stay here. I'll take people to get Millie out right now!"
James was very agitated and stood up abruptly.
Nora quickly pulled him back and said, "James, don't be impulsive. This is Hugo's territory. You can't just forcibly take Millie away."
James continued, "If that's what it takes, I'll find allies and I'm willing to fight to the bitter end."
Nora frowned slightly and said, "Mr. James, look around. This is the city, not your turf. If you plan to spend the rest of your days in prison, then go ahead."
James clenched his fists so tightly that they creaked, his face full of suppressed anger, and finally, he sat down dejectedly.
"Dr. Smith, what should I do? I promised Emmeline I would take care of Millie. I can't break my promise."
James's eyes turned red, and he looked pained.
Nora sighed softly and patted his shoulder. "I understand how you feel. Let me think about it. Don't worry, Millie is my daughter. I'm more anxious than you are."
James swallowed hard, nodding.
Nora looked at Ellie and said, "Ms. Ellie, could you ask your friend to keep an eye on Millie and contact you if anything happens?"
James translated, and Ellie nodded vigorously, sending a message to Amara.
Amara didn't reply immediately. After about five minutes, she responded with an "okay."
Ellie made an OK gesture to Nora.
Nora smiled and, thinking of something, said to James, "I've always had a question. Don't you think Hugo is overly concerned about Millie?"
James was taken aback and looked at her, waiting for her to continue.
Nora said, "Look, Hugo has made plans and found someone to impersonate Millie's aunt. It seems like he wants to keep Millie around and raise her. Isn't he worried his wife won't be happy about it?"
James squinted and said, "It is quite strange. Although Hugo and Stov are close, they're not brothers. Why is he so concerned about Millie?"
Nora pondered. "You mentioned before that Hugo and his wife haven't had any children, right?"
"Yes."
A thought suddenly crossed Nora's mind, and she said, "James, do you think Hugo's wife might be unable to have children? Hugo is so concerned about Millie that he brought her back to raise her as his daughter."
James was stunned and replied, "It's possible."
Nora sat up slightly and looked at Ellie, saying. "James, ask Ellie to find out from her friend if Hugo's wife is unable to have children."
"Okay."
James translated for Ellie.
Ellie quickly sent a message.
Amara didn't reply immediately. After about ten minutes, she responded.
Amara: [I heard some of the older servants gossiping that Mrs. Rochet had a miscarriage before and never got pregnant again. Maybe her uterus was damaged.]
Ellie showed the message to James.
After reading it, James said to Nora, "Dr. Smith, your analysis is correct. Hugo's wife might be infertile, so Hugo is very concerned about Millie."
So that was it!
Nora's heart stirred.
It dawned on her: Hugo, childless but empire-rich, saw in Millie, a distant relation, a chance to secure his legacy.
'He brought Millie back to raise her as his heir.'
'But Millie isn't Hugo's biological child. Hugo is wealthy and powerful; even if Aisha can't have children, he can find another woman to have a child with.'
Although Nora didn't approve of this approach, many wealthy men did this in reality.
'It could also be that Hugo is deeply in love with Aisha and would rather remain childless than be with another woman.'
Nora's mind raced, and she said to James, "Ask Ellie to find out from her friend if Hugo and his wife have a good relationship."
James translated, and Ellie complied.
Amara: [It's okay.]
Seeing this reply, Nora's eyes flickered.
She kept thinking, 'It doesn't mean they are a loving couple.'
'So Hugo and Aisha's relationship isn't as loving as me with Aaron.'
'Since Hugo isn't deeply in love with Aisha, why doesn't he find another woman to have a child with?'
'Is it because Aisha's family is powerful, and he doesn't dare?'
