Chapter 985 Would We Succeed?

A few people were waiting outside, and finally, the surgery ended.

The emergency room door opened, and Jose Walker stepped out.

"Johnnie, the doctor's out," Randy said.

Johnnie hurried over. "Dr. Walker, how's my mom?"

Jose took off his mask. "She had a sudden heart attack, but we saved her in time. She’s out of danger but needs a few days in the hospital for observation."

Everyone sighed in relief.

"Thank you, Dr. Walker," Johnnie said.

"Keep her calm and avoid any excitement," Jose advised.

"Got it," Johnnie replied.

"Thanks a lot, Dr. Walker. You're known for your skills in cardiothoracic surgery. With you on the case, Vilma's in good hands," Susan said with a smile.

Jose smiled back. "I'll get back to work. Let me know if you need anything."

"Okay."

After Jose left, Randy turned to Johnnie. "You really need to thank Susan. If she hadn't asked the hospital director to get Dr. Walker, your mom might not have made it."

Johnnie looked at Susan seriously. "Susan, I owe you big time. I won't forget this."

Susan waved it off. "Johnnie, no need to be so formal."

Johnnie smiled. "Dad, let's go see Mom."

"Alright."

Susan and Johnnie helped Randy as they walked to the inpatient department.

Gabriella followed, watching Susan and Johnnie act like a couple with an elder, feeling uneasy.

Johnnie had to remember Susan's help, but did that mean he had to marry her?

She thought she didn't need the elders' approval, but Randy's disapproval still stung.

Gabriella's eyes were on Johnnie's tall frame. If Randy wanted Johnnie to marry Susan out of gratitude, what would Johnnie do?

They reached the ward, and thanks to Susan, the hospital had arranged a private room for Vilma.

Randy praised Susan again.

Seeing Susan's shy smile, looking for Johnnie's approval, made Gabriella even more uncomfortable.

She adjusted her hair and stepped forward to hold Johnnie's arm.

"Thanks for everything today, Ms. Hicks. Johnnie, when Vilma is discharged, we must properly thank Susan."

"I will," Johnnie said.

Seeing Gabriella's forced politeness, Susan gave an awkward smile.

She checked the time. "Randy, my colleague is covering for me at work. Now that Vilma is fine, I should get back. I'll see you later."

"Okay, thanks again," Randy said quickly.

"If you need anything, just call," Susan said.

"Okay."

Randy looked at Johnnie. "Johnnie, see Susan out for me."

Johnnie nodded, let go of Gabriella's hand, and walked Susan out.

As they passed the nurse's station, a nurse who knew Susan teased, "Susan, is this handsome guy your boyfriend?"

She had seen them helping Randy upstairs together and assumed Johnnie was Susan's boyfriend.

Susan glanced at Johnnie, but before she could speak, Johnnie said, "I'm not her boyfriend."

Susan gave an awkward smile. "Yeah, don't guess. He's my former neighbor."

"Oh, childhood friends?" the nurse teased.

Susan didn't deny it, giving a shy smile, and continued walking towards the elevator with Johnnie.

"Johnnie, you don't need to see me off. I'll come back to see Vilma after work," Susan said gently.

"It's fine, you go ahead. My girlfriend and I will take care of my mom," Johnnie replied politely but distantly.

Susan's smile froze; she got the hint. Johnnie wanted to keep his distance.

Feeling awkward, she didn't say more. She had her pride.

The elevator arrived, and Susan said, "Johnnie, I'm heading down now."

"Alright."

Johnnie nodded slightly, and after the elevator doors closed, he went back to the ward.

Inside, Gabriella and Randy were on their phones, not talking. Randy sat by the bed, keeping watch over Vilma. He didn't like Gabriella much, so he didn't speak to her. The room felt tense.

Randy thought it would be nice if Susan were there to chat with him. The air was thick with tension.

When Johnnie returned, he saw Gabriella and Randy on opposite sides and understood.

"Gabriella, I won't be going back to Youston for the next few days. Why don't you go back first?"

Randy didn't like Gabriella, and he regretted bringing her.

Gabriella moved closer. "Do you want me to go back and keep trying to seduce Aaron?"

Johnnie's brown eyes fixed on her. "You shouldn't be that foolish. Knowing it won't work, why keep trying and get hurt?"

Gabriella's eyes shifted. "Then will we succeed?"

'Will we succeed?'Johnnie retorted, "What do you think?"

Gabriella smiled charmingly. "I think I shouldn't leave you now, or success will turn into failure."

She meant that with Susan around, leaving would give Johnnie and Susan a chance to get closer.

Johnnie couldn't help but smile. Gabriella cared about him. Being cared for felt nice.

"Then don't leave."

Seeing Gabriella almost clinging to Johnnie, Randy frowned, clearly displeased. This was a hospital ward, and Gabriella didn't seem to care about the setting. Indeed, women in the business world were more open.

"Johnnie, can you get me a glass of water? I'm a bit thirsty," Gabriella said.

Johnnie nodded. "Do you want me to book a hotel room for you to rest for a while?"

"No need, I'll stay with you."

"Then sit for a while, I'll get you some water."

"Okay."

Watching Johnnie busy himself, Gabriella smiled. She liked his thoughtfulness and gentleness. Though Randy's attitude upset her, as long as Johnnie liked her, she could ignore everything else for now.

Soon, the anesthesia wore off, and Vilma woke up.

"Vilma, you're awake! Johnnie, come see your mom," Randy called to Johnnie, who was sitting with Gabriella.

Johnnie quickly got up and walked over. Gabriella followed."Mom, how are you feeling?"

Vilma was dazed for a moment, then forced a smile and struggled to sit up. Johnnie quickly placed a pillow behind her back.

"Getting old, I almost died."

Randy said, "Fortunately, you have a strong will to live. Death didn't take you."

Vilma said, "Yes, I had one foot in the grave, but you pulled me back."

The two had a good relationship and joked a bit.

Vilma saw Gabriella standing behind Johnnie. "Who is this?"
