Chapter 1023 It Must Have Been Rafael Who Sent Someone to Do It.
When the doctor said Gabriella was pregnant, Thea and Yannick were shocked. "Pregnant? Gabriella's pregnant?"
"She's one month along. You didn't know?" the doctor asked.
They both shook their heads.
"Please sign here," the doctor said.
"Okay," Yannick quickly signed.
Nora and Aaron exchanged surprised looks. The baby must be Johnnie's, given the timing.
Gabriella's surgery took four hours, but the baby didn't make it. Thankfully, Gabriella wasn't in any life-threatening danger.
Thea and Yannick went to the ward to wait for her to wake up. Johnnie was still in surgery.
Nora looked worried. As a doctor, she knew the longer the surgery, the more critical it was. "Aaron, I want to check on Johnnie."
Aaron nodded. "I'll get Hugo to contact the hospital."
After some calls, Hugo got the hospital's approval. Thanks to Nora's reputation and her connection with Tomas, they let her in.
Nora changed into surgical attire and went in. Aaron waited outside.
Soon, Yannick came over. "Gabriella's awake and wants to see you and Nora."
Aaron went to the ward and saw Gabriella, looking exhausted with scratches and bandages. He nodded at her, thinking about her lost child. "It's good you're awake. Being alive is a blessing."
Gabriella asked, "What about Johnnie? Is his surgery still going?"
"Yes, Nora's checking on him," Aaron said.
Gabriella's eyes filled with tears. "Nora's a miracle doctor. She'll save Johnnie, right?"
Seeing her cry, Thea said, "Gabriella, don't cry. You just had a miscarriage and need to rest."
Gabriella was stunned. "Mom, what did you say?"
Thea looked at her. "Gabriella, did you not know you were pregnant?"
Gabriella touched her belly, murmuring, "I was pregnant?"
Thea sighed, "The baby was just one month old, but it didn't survive."
Gabriella stared at her belly, tears streaming. "Our baby with Johnnie is gone?"
"A life of just one month, gone," she whispered.
"You're still young. Take care of yourself, and there will be more chances," Thea comforted her.
Gabriella wiped her tears and looked at Aaron. "Mr. Gordon, the car accident wasn't an accident. Someone tried to kill us."
Aaron's face turned serious. "What happened?"
Gabriella took a deep breath. "After we left home, Johnnie said he was preparing to return to the country. I suggested we stay at a scenic spot for a night and go to the airport the next day. He agreed, so we drove there. But a car followed us. On the mountain road, they shot at our car, blowing out the tire. Johnnie lost control, and we crashed through the guardrail, falling off the cliff. Luckily, some trees broke our fall, and we escaped before the car exploded."
Gabriella remembered the explosion's shockwave was intense. Johnnie had shielded her, but she still lost the baby. What about Johnnie? How was he now?
Aaron listened, his face serious. 'Who would hire a killer to target them?' A name flashed in his mind: Rafael. He was the most likely suspect.
"Mr. Gordon, you have to help us find out who did this!" Gabriella clutched her belly, eyes full of hatred.
Aaron glanced at her and then at Thea and Yannick, who were standing by in shock. "Gabriella, can you ask Thea and Yannick to step out for a moment?"
Gabriella nodded. "Mom, Dad, please step out for a moment."
Thea and Yannick hesitated but eventually left without asking questions.
"Mr. Gordon, do you have a guess who did it?" Gabriella asked, her suspicion growing.
Aaron looked at her red eyes, silent for a moment. "It was probably Rafael."
Gabriella's suspicion matched Aaron's. She stared blankly, then clenched her fingers. "Rafael thought I gave him that fake confidential document on purpose, so he hired a killer, right?"
"That's possible," Aaron nodded.
Gabriella became agitated. "Mr. Gordon, why didn't you tell me the truth earlier?"
"What truth? That the document was fake?" Aaron said. "You were determined to avenge Suzy. Do you think we could have told you?"
Pain flashed in Gabriella's eyes. "Since you knew I approached you on purpose and knew Johnnie liked me, why didn't you make him treat me better, make me betray them?"
"It was Johnnie's choice. I couldn't ask him to do anything," Aaron said.
Gabriella shook her head. "No, to him, you're his idol, his god. He would have listened to you!"
Aaron was silent for a moment. "It's no use talking about this now. Whether Rafael was behind the accident still needs investigation. You just had a miscarriage; don't get emotional. Rest and take care of yourself."
Gabriella said nothing, just silently shed tears.
Aaron gave a few more instructions and then left the ward. Thea and Yannick were waiting outside. Aaron nodded at them, walked to the end of the corridor, and dialed Mateo's number.
No answer at first. After a while, Mateo called back. "Rare, Mr. Gordon, why are you calling me today? Do you miss me?"
Normally, Aaron would have joked back, but not now. "What has Rafael been up to lately?" he asked directly.
