Chapter 889 Let's Get Married

"If you can, that'd be great," Jane said.

"Got it. I'll call them right now."

Nora hung up and turned to Aaron. "Zephyr's seriously hurt. Jane wants me to treat him personally."

Aaron nodded. "I'll go find Hugo."

There was a small helipad in Hugo's place.

When Hugo heard what was going on, he made arrangements right away.

Meanwhile, Nora explained the situation to Mateo, asking him to notify the military hospital so she could get into the operating room and help with the surgery.

Mateo didn't waste any time and made the call.

Twenty minutes later, the plane landed on the military hospital's rooftop.

Aaron and Nora got off the plane and headed straight to the operating room.

Jane was pacing in the hallway. When she saw them, she rushed over.

"Dr. Smith, Mr. Gordon, I'm so sorry to bother you this late."

"No worries. I'll head to the OR now."

Nora didn't waste time chatting and went straight into the operating room.

Aaron stayed outside with Jane.

Four hours later, Nora came out.

"Dr. Smith, how is he?" Jane asked, clearly worried.

Nora took off her mask. "The bullet's out. He's stable. The surgery went well."

Jane let out a huge sigh of relief. "Thank goodness."

But Aaron sensed something was off.

"Nora, is there something you're not telling us?"

Aaron knew her too well.

Nora looked at Aaron, then at Jane. "Yeah, the bullet damaged his nerves. He might have some aftereffects."

Jane's face fell. "What kind of aftereffects?"

Nora explained, "He might have hand tremors if he does long surgeries in the future."

Jane's heart sank. For a doctor, shaky hands mean no more surgeries.

"Dr. Smith, is there no way to fully recover?"

Nora hesitated. "I can try, but I can't promise anything."

Jane nodded. "You're a great doctor. You can do it."

Nora smiled. She was good, but not a miracle worker.

Not every illness could be cured.

Nora knew how tough a doctor's job was.

Surgeries could last anywhere from two to nine hours.

Zephyr already had work-related issues, so even if she treated him, long surgeries would be tough for him.

"Ms. Harvey, it's late. I'll take Nora home to rest. We'll check on you tomorrow."

After Nora changed, Aaron spoke up.

"Alright. Thanks again for everything," Jane said.

Aaron waved it off and left the hospital with Nora.

Jane went to the ward.

Zephyr was still out cold.

Looking at his handsome but pale face, Jane sighed.

'Is Zephyr an idiot?' she thought.

'I'm not even his real girlfriend. He didn't need to take a bullet for me.'

Jane sat by the bed and tucked him in.

Now, because of her, his medical career might be over.

She felt too guilty to break up with him now.

Zephyr wasn't stupid; he did it on purpose.

He made sure she'd have to turn their fake relationship into a real one.

Zephyr slept through the night and slowly woke up the next morning.

The smell of disinfectant filled his nose, and his thoughts were still a bit foggy.

He moved slightly, wincing at the pain.

His mind started to clear up.

He'd been shot twice, but he was still alive!

Turning his head, he saw Jane sleeping by his bedside, her hand holding his.

Zephyr looked at their clasped hands and smiled.

Even though they’d been pretending to be a couple, Jane had always kept her distance.

This was the first time she’d held his hand.

Maybe she was finally moved by him.

The slight movement woke Jane up. She looked up and saw Zephyr smiling.

She was overjoyed. "Zephyr, you're awake! How do you feel?"

Zephyr, in a good mood, joked, "It hurts, but having a caring girlfriend makes it worth it."

Seeing him joke, Jane felt relieved.

Her gaze fell on their hands, and she instinctively let go.

But then, she held his hand again.

Jane looked at Zephyr and made a decision.

"Zephyr, let's get married."

Zephyr's smile froze, and he swallowed hard.

He sat up in bed, somewhat incredulous.

"Are you proposing to me?"

Waking up to a proposal from the usually cold policewoman?

"Yes, will you accept?" Jane asked.

Zephyr started coughing violently.

Jane quickly patted his back.

"Zephyr, don't get excited. If you don't agree, I'll take it back."

"Don't take it back, I'm not excited."

Zephyr quickly calmed his racing heart.

Jane was too straightforward; it was hard not to get excited.

Zephyr looked at her. "Jane, proposals should be done by men."

"Nowadays, men and women are equal. It doesn't matter who proposes," Jane said.

Zephyr confirmed again, "Jane, do you really want to marry me?"

"Yes, I want to marry you," Jane said firmly.

Zephyr paused and said, "Just because I took two bullets for you, you want to marry me?"

"Not entirely," Jane said.

Jane wasn't noble enough to marry someone just because she was moved.

Jane had simply figured it out.

Life was short and she wanted to cherish it.

Since she had met a man she liked, she should be with him.

Jane didn't want to worry about future dangers or concerns; she just wanted to enjoy the love she had never experienced.

"What else?" Zephyr asked.

Jane raised an eyebrow, "Zephyr, you ask too many questions. Do you want to get married or not?"

Although Jane straightforwardly said she wanted to marry him, she was still a woman and wanted to maintain some dignity.

If she admitted she had fell for him, she feared Zephyr would become too arrogant.

"Yes, as soon as we get back, we'll get the marriage license," Zephyr said quickly.

Jane nodded. "Alright, I'll get some water to wash your face."

"Okay."

Zephyr watched Jane's back, feeling like he was dreaming.

Waking up to find he had a fiancée!

What a surprise.

Feeling the pain in his body, Zephyr touched his bandaged chest and smiled.

The gunshot wound was worth it.

Jane came back with water and said, "Let's wash your face first."

Zephyr nodded and casually asked, "My gunshot wound should be fine, right?"

Jane's movements paused, then she said, "If you were seriously injured, would you still be able to move around now?"
