Chapter 892 She Could be Fierce Sometimes
Zephyr watched Jane crack her knuckles, looking like she was ready to deck someone. He got on edge.
"What, you gonna hit me? Don't forget you're a cop."
Jane smirked and stepped closer.
"I didn't forget, but I'm a rebellious cop. Sometimes, I strike first with unruly criminals."
Zephyr was speechless.
What a miscalculation!
Could he rewind time?
Seeing Jane getting closer, Zephyr got the feeling that she'd kill him if he didn't get treated. Zephyr quickly spoke up, "No, it's not that I don't want Dr. Smith to treat me. I just know my own condition. Even with treatment, it won't help."
Jane said, "How do you know it won't help? Nora's miraculous, and she said she'd do her best."
Zephyr shook his head. "I'm a doctor. I already have occupational diseases. That bullet wound made it worse. Even if Dr. Smith's treatment works, I won't be able to stay in the operating room for long periods anymore."
Jane frowned. "Is that what you think?"
Zephyr said, "If you don't believe me, call Dr. Smith."
Jane looked skeptical but pulled out her phone and called Nora.
As soon as the call connected, she explained the situation.
Nora replied, "Yes, he's right."
Jane was silent for a moment, then thanked her.
After hanging up, Zephyr saw she was quiet and said, "See, I wasn't lying. Things are as they are. I won't lie like some people."
Jane was speechless.
Zephyr was talking about her.
"Zephyr, I wasn't lying. I said I wanted to marry you not because I feel guilty, but how can I make you believe that?"
Jane was in a bad mood because of Zephyr's aftereffects, so her tone was harsher than usual.
Zephyr was stunned, looking at Jane without speaking.
In his eyes, Jane was usually a calm and composed cop.
Even when facing criminals, she was like that.
He had never seen Jane lose her temper like this.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to be harsh."
Jane took a deep breath and quickly calmed down.
Zephyr moved his lips, wanting to say it was okay, but then heard Jane say, "Blame it on your injury. It has affected your intelligence and infected me."
Zephyr was speechless.
Was that even possible?
Jane looked at Zephyr choke on his words with wide eyes, and laughed.
"If you don't want treatment, then let's go back."
Zephyr was still in a daze, watching Jane turn to handle his discharge paperwork, and he sighed in relief.
Jane could be really harsh sometimes.
Thinking of something, Zephyr pondered.
'Jane really isn't proposing marriage out of guilt.'
'It is because she had feelings for me.'
Zephyr quickly dismissed the thought.
'That is unlikely.'
'It is probably because of that bullet.'
'I take a bullet for her, and she is moved.'
Jane finished the discharge paperwork for Zephyr and then took him back to Chrisland.
Once back in the country, Zephyr went home, and Jane went straight to the police station to report the whole incident to her superior.
Her superior, Oliver Alves, listened to the report and said, "Matteo has been deported. Under our interrogation, he confessed to the kidnapping."
Jane nodded, her expression becoming more serious as she thought of something.
"Mr. Alves, Matteo's a wanted criminal. He couldn't have come and gone so easily and kidnapped Zephyr without any help. Now that he's in custody, do we know who helped him?"
Oliver nodded. "We thought of that too and interrogated him. But he's tight-lipped and won't reveal who helped him."
Jane squinted. "Can we dig it up?"
Oliver paused. "We've gathered some information. This might be related to the Wright family."
Jane raised an eyebrow. She had always suspected this.
She had many enemies, but domestically, those criminals wouldn't be so blatant.
This time, Matteo successfully kidnapped Zephyr, seemingly targeting her, using Zephyr to lure her out, but it killed two birds with one stone.
It allowed Matteo to get revenge and also let Matteo deal with Zephyr for the person behind the scenes.
And the only people related to Zephyr were the Wright family.
"Mr. Alves, is there any wrongdoing associated with the Wright family?" Jane inquired.
"While few capitalists are entirely clean, as long as they stay within legal boundaries, we tend not to intervene too heavily."
Oliver said, "But the Wright family has been crossing the line in recent years. Take the incident at the restaurant last time. Alvin committed many crimes relying on Hubert's backing, but he was always let off."
"This time, because of you, we thoroughly investigated Alvin and found many of his illegal activities. But he's very stubborn, taking all the blame himself and clearing Hubert of any involvement. So even though we know Hubert has issues, we can't do anything about him."
Hearing this, Jane thought of the time Zephyr took her to a small restaurant, and they encountered Alvin harrassing Marlon in public.
Alvin was extremely arrogant then, not taking Jane seriously at all.
Later, Alvin was thoroughly investigated, which was probably why Hubert wanted to kill her and Zephyr.
Because she and Zephyr were in Hubert's way.
Jane pondered for a moment. "Mr. Alves, I have an idea that might quickly uncover Hubert's crimes and bring him to justice."
"What idea?"
"I'll go back to my specialty."
Oliver squinted. "You want to go undercover again?"
"Yes."
Zephyr returned to his apartment, feeling a wave of loneliness wash over him as he looked at the quiet room.
Sitting on the couch, staring into the void, Jane's image inexplicably flashed through Zephyr's mind.
He actually missed the time in the hospital.
Although Jane didn't talk much, her presence gave him a sense of peace and belonging.
Zephyr sighed. Indeed, habits were terrifying.
It hadn't been long, and he was already used to having Jane by his side.
Zephyr shook his head and went to the bathroom to clean up.
After a week in the hospital, with a gunshot wound, he hadn't properly cleaned himself, and it was unbearable.
But because of the gunshot wound, even though Zephyr was discharged, the wound still needed dressing.
So after washing up, Zephyr prepared to apply medicine to himself.
Just as Zephyr took out the medical kit, the doorbell rang.
He was slightly surprised, got up, and walked to the door, looking through the peephole.
Seeing Jane standing at the door, Zephyr's eyes showed a hint of surprise.
