Chapter 166 A New Flame for Mr. Gordon?
"Wait just a moment," Aaron requested before ending the call.
Nora slid her phone into her pocket and retreated to a corner, acutely aware of the receptionist's scrutinizing gaze that made her feel like a person of interest in a criminal investigation.
Shortly after, Noe descended from the upper floors. "Dr. Smith, my apologies for the delay. Please, follow me," he invited. Nora acknowledged him with a slight nod and trailed behind him toward the CEO's private elevator.
The receptionist and her colleague exchanged wide-eyed, astonished glances before diving into a hushed discussion. "Who is she? Did Noe actually come down personally to escort her?" one queried.
"I'm not sure. He showed her such respect, but she doesn't appear to be from a wealthy background," the other mused.
"She used the CEO's private elevator. Aside from Suzy, I've never seen anyone receive such treatment."
"Could she be Mr. Gordon's new girlfriend?"
"Hold on, doesn't she resemble the female doctor who made headlines yesterday for her life-saving efforts?"
"Somewhat."
Intrigued, they swiftly retrieved their phones to verify their suspicions. However, the doctor's images in the news were frustratingly obscured.
Meanwhile, inside the ascending elevator, Nora remained indifferent to the gossip. Her mind was consumed with the issue regarding the herbs.
Deciding to probe Noe for information, she asked, "Noe, do you have any idea why Mr. Gordon would seize the shipment from my brother Jack's lab?"
Noe hesitated before responding, "I'm sorry, Dr. Smith, but as an assistant, I'm primarily here to carry out orders. I'm not privy to the specifics."
Nora pursed her lips and turned away, thinking, 'As I suspected, he's too loyal to Aaron to reveal anything.'
Noe, observing Nora's calm exterior, felt it prudent to speak favorably of his boss. He didn't want her harboring any ill feelings towards Mr. Gordon, especially after discovering his influence in obtaining the medical supplies.
He cautiously began, "Dr. Smith, from what I've observed, I believe Mr. Gordon genuinely has your best interests at heart. He nearly had a fallout with his family over you."
He remembered the incident that had almost given Jacob, Aaron's closest kin, a heart attack due to the ensuing drama.
"Jacob is Mr. Gordon's most trusted confidant. He never goes against his wishes."
"But this time, for your sake, he disregarded Jacob's advice. That's unheard of!"
Nora's brows knitted together involuntarily upon hearing this.
'Why would Aaron do this? Haven't we made our positions abundantly clear to each other? This is entirely unnecessary!'
As the elevator doors slid open, Noe half-expected Nora to press for more details about the incident, but she remained silent, causing a wave of disappointment to wash over him.
'Dr. Smith is quite the stubborn one!'
Wondering if Aaron could handle her, Noe guided Nora into the executive suite.
"Mr. Gordon, Dr. Smith has arrived."
Engrossed in his work, Aaron barely glanced up, acknowledging her presence with a noncommittal grunt.
Noe tactfully retreated from the office, gently closing the door behind him.
Stepping into Aaron's office for the first time, Nora surveyed her surroundings. The vast room was tastefully appointed, with a black, white, and gray color scheme that exuded a masculine elegance.
The decor was a reflection of the man himself: subtle yet luxurious. "Already here? Come help me up," Aaron beckoned to Nora.
Help him up? Did Aaron still consider her his personal physician?
Nora held her ground, "Mr. Gordon, didn't you promise to ship the order as soon as I visited your office? I'm here now, can you proceed with the delivery?"
Aaron found himself captivated by the cool, aloof expression on her face. Instead of responding to her, he extended a hand, his voice echoing softly in the room, "Come help me up."
Nora's lips tightened into a thin line, her body remaining stubbornly still.
Their eyes locked, a silent battle of wills transpiring between them.
After a moment that seemed to stretch into eternity, Nora's patience began to fray at the edges. With a sigh of resignation, she moved to lend him her support.
A faint smirk danced on Aaron's lips as he smoothly drew her closer, guiding her towards the couch to sit beside him.
No sooner had he settled down than Nora attempted to rise.
However, Aaron was quick to pull her back, seating her firmly on his lap.
His muscular thighs, a testament to his strength, caused Nora to blush as she stammered, "Mr. Gordon, please have some decency."
She struggled to stand, only to be held in place by the iron grip of Aaron's arms.
"Nora, you've seen my body, we've slept together, why the shyness now?" His words caused her face to deepen into a richer shade of red.
She attempted to pry his hands away, her voice firm, "Let go of me now!"
"And what if I don't want to?" Aaron's gaze rested on her crimson ears, a playful glint in his eyes.
With a furrowed brow, Nora swiftly drew a silver pin, pressing it against his chest with a warning, "Release me now, or I'll make sure you regret it for the rest of your life!"
Unperturbed, Aaron remained seated, his arms still firmly encircling her waist, "Then I guess I'll just have to stick with you forever!"
Nora's glossy eyes widened, a tumultuous mix of embarrassment and annoyance flashing through them.
Sensing that she was teetering on the edge of losing her cool, Aaron finally released her. He was cautious not to push her too far. Holding her close had been a form of self-consolation, a balm for the vice-like grip that the past few days had held over his chest.
The moment Aaron released her, Nora quickly stepped back, putting some distance between them.
Adjusting her slightly wrinkled clothes, she faced him with a cool expression, "Mr. Gordon, what will it take for you to go through with the shipment?"
Aaron's dark eyes narrowed, "Nora, do you care a lot about Jack?"
"He's a senior colleague of mine, of course, I care," Nora responded.
'Just a senior colleague?' Aaron pondered, studying her. "Anything else?"
Nora's brows knitted in frustration, "Mr. Gordon, what are you driving at? Please, can you stop being childish? I've already told you I have no plans to marry."
She hadn't expected Aaron to be so childish, to suppress Jack simply because of her!
"Nora, if you don't want innocent people to get hurt, you'd best do as I say," Aaron cut straight to the point.
'Do as he says? What does he want from her?' Nora thought, her anger flaring.
"Mr. Gordon, is this fun for you? And to think I had a good opinion of you. Please don't make me lose that little bit of respect!" She retorted.
'She has a soft spot for me!' Aaron seized on that revelation.
His brows lifted in amusement, "Nora, are you admitting you like me?"
Nora choked on her words, and upon seeing the amused look in his eyes, she quickly looked away.
"Mr. Gordon, please don't get the wrong idea. I generally maintain a positive opinion of everyone." Her explanation lacked conviction, causing Aaron to chuckle to himself, his mood significantly uplifted.
'Because this was the first time she openly admitted to having a soft spot for him while sober.'
"Nora, agree to a few conditions, and I'll ship the goods right away."
'More conditions!' Nora thought, trying to rein in her temper.
"What conditions?" She asked.
"First, continue to treat me and be my private doctor, available on call," Aaron stated.
That demand wasn't hard to meet.
Though reluctant, Nora nodded, thinking of her reason for the trip, "As long as the compensation is fair, Mr. Gordon, I can agree."
A slight smile played on Aaron's lips, "Second, you're not to get too close to any other man but me."
