Chapter 156 You Are My Cure
As Jenny neared, Edric discreetly slid his phone into his pocket. "Nothing. Let's eat," he said nonchalantly.
Jenny, however, was not easily fooled. She swiftly grabbed his phone and played the recently recorded video. "Edric, what on earth are you doing filming? Are you planning to give Aaron the scoop? If you're playing double agent, we're going to have a serious problem," she warned him.
Edric watched as Jenny feigned toughness, an amused arch to his eyebrow. "And how exactly do we 'have a serious problem'?" he asked, his tone laced with intrigue.
In response, Jenny deleted the video and subtly clenched her fist. "I'll knock some sense into you," she threatened, her tone half-serious.
Edric's smile morphed into a wickedly teasing grin. "You wouldn't dare. I know you've got a soft spot for me," he taunted.
Jenny moved closer to him, her voice barely above a whisper for fear of being overheard. Edric leaned in to play along, their faces mere inches apart. A slight forward move on his part would have met her lips. Jenny, her cheeks aflame at the proximity of Edric's handsome face, quickly straightened up.
After a moment of contemplation, she said seriously, "Edric, let's go to the hospital later, alright?"
Edric, taken aback, revealed a hint of concern in his eyes. "What's wrong? Are you feeling okay?"
Jenny's eyes sparkled with mischief. "Not me, you. You're blind and out of your mind. I'm driving you there to get checked out!"
Edric fell silent. 'Jenny sure has a sharp tongue,' he thought to himself. Her voice, not particularly subdued, drew the attention of everyone around them.
Edric's wicked smile returned. "No need, you're my cure-all. Seeing you makes any ailment vanish," he declared, causing Jenny to fall silent.
Breakfast was a lively affair. After the meal, they bid farewell to Grandma Carter and split into two cars to leave.
At that moment, Noe was also just stepping out with Aaron. Noticing two cars in the distance, Noe mentioned, "Mr. Gordon, it looks like one of those is Edric's."
Aaron, who had been engrossed in something on his tablet in the back seat, glanced up and offered a slight smile. "He's got initiative," he mused, acknowledging Edric's experience in wooing women.
"Mr. Gordon, there's another car following Edric's, but it's not Nora's," Noe observed more carefully, hesitating. "It looks like the license plate belongs to Dr. Parker."
'Jack's car? Is he picking up Nora and the kids?' Aaron's dark gaze narrowed, his mood turning sour. 'Nora rejected him. She'd likely rebuff any advances from Jack as well. But that doesn't mean Jack will stop pursuing her. Could they possibly develop feelings over time?' A sense of restlessness flitted through Aaron's mind.
Upon arriving at Gordon Group, Aaron set aside personal matters to convene a high-level meeting in the conference room. By the time the meeting concluded and he returned to his office, he found his mother and Suzy waiting for him. His already agitated mood grew more irritable at the sight.
"Mom, Suzy, what's up?" he asked, his tone cool. Mary looked at him.
"Aaron, I heard you told Sunny to stop treating you. Why?" she questioned, her voice filled with concern.
Aaron knew they had come for this very reason. "Mom, it's my leg. I decide what happens to it," he stated firmly.
"Aaron, are you trying to give me a heart attack?" Mary persisted. "Do you not want Sunny's treatments because do you think she's not skilled enough? Fine, I can find you a better doctor. Would that work for you?"
"There's no need, Mom. I've made my decision," Aaron replied, sitting down at his desk and starting to work through the documents.
Mary watched his impassive face, her voice rising with frustration. "So, if you're refusing treatment from Sunny, are you planning on going back to Nora for help?"
But Aaron didn't say a word. He just kept reviewing the documents as if, by doing so, he agreed.
Mary's chest heaved, and she stepped up to his desk. "Aaron, tell me, have you really made up your mind about her?"
Aaron paused, looked up, and confidently said, "Yes." There wasn't a hint of jest in his voice.
Mary was furious. She grabbed Suzy's hand. "I don't agree! Aaron, since Suzy is here, I want to make it clear—when it comes to choosing your wife, Suzy's the only one I recognize!"
Suzy had been silent all along. Her heart leaped with joy at Mary's words. She looked at Aaron with hopeful eyes.
Aaron's handsome face was stoic. "Mom, I'm the one living my life. No one can interfere, so please stay out of it," he stated firmly.
Mary couldn't hide her concern. "Aaron, you're my son. How can I stand by and watch you go down the wrong path? I'm telling you, I'm going to discuss your wedding with Suzy's parents right away," she announced, her voice resolute.
This was her way of accelerating their marriage plans. Suzy's heart raced as she watched Aaron, hoping he would agree to Mary's intentions.
Aaron was looking at her, too, but his gaze was devoid of warmth. "Mom, please don't presume to decide for me, or it will be on your own head. Go home. I need to have a word with Suzy alone," he said, his tone firm.
Mary protested. "Whatever you have to say, you can say in front of me."
Seeing Aaron's impatience, Suzy quickly interjected, "It's okay. Let us have a chat alone."
Mary gave her a look. "Alright. Aaron, you two make such a great pair. Have a serious talk about marriage, okay?" With that, Mary left them alone.
The door closed, and Suzy approached Aaron with a smirk. "So, what did you want to talk about?" she asked, her voice filled with anticipation.
Aaron looked straight at her. "What are your thoughts on this now?" he asked, his tone serious.
Suzy flirtatiously tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and smiled coyly. "I'm open to following our elders' wishes," she replied, her voice filled with hope.
"Susy, we're both adults, and I want to hear what you really think," Aaron pressed, his gaze steady.
‘She's dead set on marrying me!’ he thought to himself.
Leaning forward slightly, Suzy took his hand. "Aaron, from the moment I saw you, I fell for you. I love you. I want to marry you," she confessed, her voice filled with sincerity.
Aaron's brow furrowed as he withdrew his hand. "Suzy, I don't love you. Marrying me won't make you happy," he said, his tone filled with regret.
Shaking her head, Suzy protested. "No, Aaron, you've been so kind to me – how can you not love me?"
"It's because I see you as a sister, not because I'm in love with you," he explained, his words firm but gentle.
His words were firm, but Suzy stubbornly refused to accept them. "No, that's love! Aaron, our families have been friends for generations. In terms of background and looks, we're the perfect match. Being together is the right choice," she insisted, her voice filled with conviction.
Aaron rubbed his temples, visibly impatient. "Suzy, I'll say it again, I don't love you. You won't find happiness with me," he reiterated, his tone filled with finality.
"Look at my mom's marriage, okay? It was a business arrangement just like what my dad had. Go ahead and ask her how she has felt over the years and whether she regrets marrying my dad. If she had the chance, would she marry him again?" he challenged, his words leaving Suzy speechless.
She had seen it all. Aaron's father was rarely home and even had an affair when he was younger. It was clear that Mary was dissatisfied with her marriage.
'Without a man's love and care, of course, she's unhappy,' Suzy thought to herself. 'But that's her own lack of skill in holding a man's heart. It's her own failing!'
"Aaron, you're not your dad, and I'm not your mom. We will make our marriage work. Just like my parents—yes, theirs was a business marriage too, but they're genuinely fond of each other!" she declared, her voice filled with determination.
