Chapter 584 It's Because of Howard

Nora said, "It's a gift from me."

Linda glanced at her and said, "Nora, you have great taste! This brooch looks really nice."

She was so good with words!

Nora smiled but didn't say anything.

Linda opened another box.

"This is from Evella," she said.

"Yes," Evella confirmed.

Linda picked up an earring and chuckled. "Before you give someone a gift, you should find out about their preferences. Rachel is allergic to earrings, and she never wears them."

Evella looked at Rachel, who, indeed, wasn't wearing any earrings.

Feeling embarrassed, she said, "I'm sorry, I didn't know."

When she and Nora were buying gifts, they thought the earrings looked nice, so they bought them on a whim.

She didn't know about Rachel's earring allergy.

"It's okay. I just returned from abroad, so, normally, you didn't know my preferences." Rachel smiled to defuse the situation.

Linda chuckled and looked at Evella with disdain, saying, "Truly a country bumpkin; even if she's now rich, she still can't fit into high society."

Her words were sharp and cutting.

Nora's expression changed instantly. She said, "I think you're worse than a country bumpkin. At least Evella doesn't mock others inappropriately, nor does she act superior and self-important as you do!"

Linda had just praised Nora intentionally. She didn't expect Nora to react this way. She got angry and said, "Nora, you..."

"Linda, that's enough," Rachel interrupted. "Ms. Hamilton is right. They are my guests, so please exercise some discretion!"

Linda pursed her lips, saying, "I just can't stand her! She grew up in the countryside. I heard her father is a rapist. She's not worthy of being Mr. Howard's girlfriend."

She scrutinized Evella.

"You're shameless. You have no self-awareness. How dare you stand by Mr. Howard's side? You've tarnished Mr. Howard's good name!" Linda said.

Nora finally understood.

No wonder Linda looked at Evella with hostility and publicly refuted her.

It was all because of Howard!

Howard had truly become a national heartthrob.

Nora was about to speak up for Evella when Evella's voice sounded. "You make a valid point. I'm actually afraid of causing trouble for Howard. But Howard isn't afraid of being associated with me.

"Before the truth is revealed in the news, he even told me that if the truth couldn't be uncovered, his reputation would be ruined, and he made me promise to take responsibility for it!"

"You should understand that when a man asks a woman to take responsibility, it's actually a subtle way of proposing to her," Evella said with a smile, neither hurried nor slow.

Linda was taken aback, realizing that Evella was showing off!

She was flaunting how much Howard liked her!

A distinguished man was humbling himself to ask a woman to take responsibility.

This woman was too lucky and proud!

Nora raised an eyebrow, feeling a bit more at ease.

It was great. Evella was starting to fight back!

Linda was very angry. She said, "You're talking nonsense! Mr. Howard would never propose to you! You're delusional!"

Evella continued to smile, saying, "Let's make a bet. Let's bet on whether he will propose to me when Howard arrives."

Linda was tempted to take the bet.

But before she could speak, Rachel grabbed her hand and said, "Alright, Linda, go attend to the guests."

Linda glanced at Rachel, who shook her head at her so she didn't say anything.

If she really bet with Evella today, she might actually end up facilitating a marriage between Howard and Evella.

She couldn't let Evella have her way!

Linda glared at Evella and attended to the guests.

"Please don't blame Linda. She's still young, spoiled since childhood, and not very sensible," Rachel apologized.

Nora remained indifferent, not bothering to engage with Linda.

Evella stayed silent.

"Guests have arrived; I'll go greet them; feel free," Rachel said before leaving.

Evella sighed, looking displeased.

She said, "I knew it would be like this."

She thought to herself that she should attend fewer of these wealthy people's gatherings in the future, to avoid being humiliated repeatedly.

"You handled that well just now," Nora said with a smile.

Evella pouted, "Nora, I don't want to be a target of public criticism."

Nora shrugged and said, "Well, you have an outstanding boyfriend."

Evella sneered, "I can replace this so-called boyfriend of mine."

They were just pretending to be a couple.

If they annoyed her, she would break up with him!

Nora pinched her cheek and said, "Don't talk nonsense. There are pastries over there; let's go get some."

"Nora, I'm serious. I'm not just complaining."

"I believe you; then go ahead and make the change."

"I'll announce to everyone that I'm not Howard's girlfriend."

"Do you need a trumpet for that?"

"Forget it. If I make the announcement now, someone might frame me, so I'd better endure it for a while."

A servant led Richard in.

"Richard, you're here," Rachel greeted him with a smile.

"This is your birthday gift." Richard handed her a box.

"Thank you." Rachel smiled and shook the box. "What's inside? It's so light!"

"Open it and see," Richard suggested.

"Okay." Rachel opened the box to find a set of car keys inside.

"Richard, did you buy me a car?" she asked.

Richard explained, "You just returned, so you probably haven't had time to buy a car. The traffic here is different from abroad, so start with a cheaper car. If it gets scratched, you won't feel too bad. Once you're familiar with the local roads, then your parents can buy you a more expensive car."

Rachel closed the box, hugged him, and said, "Richard, you're so considerate; thank you."

Richard smiled faintly, patted her back, and looked around.

When he saw Evella, his gaze locked onto her.

Evella had arrived!

"Richard, my parents know you're coming; they're waiting inside for you. Please go in," Rachel said, releasing him with a gentle smile.

Richard nodded and said, "Okay, you go attend to the guests, don't worry about me. I'll greet a few friends before meeting your parents."

"Alright," she said.

Richard walked towards Evella and Nora.

He said, "Ms. Hamilton, Ms. Remington."

Nora and Evella were enjoying desserts at the long dining table. Upon hearing his voice, both turned to look.

"Mr. Rogers, you're here."

"Yes."

Richard glanced around, asking, "Just the two of you. Is Mr. Gordon or Dr. Hamilton not here?"

"Aaron is on a business trip. Howard was performing a surgery and will arrive later," Nora explained.

Richard nodded, his gaze passing over Evella.
