Chapter 927 Seeing Two Dogs

Hubert decided to come clean.

"Yeah, I saw you struggling with the deal for ages. How could I not worry? So, I had to step in."

Zephyr looked at him. "Hubert, this project is crucial for our revenue in the second half of the year. If you don't make a penny, how will you explain it to the board and to father?"

Hubert got flustered. "Stop using the board and father against me. If you can't close this deal, you'll have no way to explain it to them."

"Once we secure this deal, even if the initial collaboration isn't profitable, it's a setup for future projects. Everyone will understand that."

Zephyr sneered. "Hubert, you sure know how to do business."

Hubert was willing to sacrifice his own interests to suppress him and made it sound so righteous.

"Isn't it because you're incompetent?" Hubert glared.

Zephyr stayed calm. "If you don't interfere, I'll secure this deal."

Hubert scoffed, "Really? Then I'll be watching closely."

"So, I hope you leave now," Zephyr said.

"Why should I?" Hubert refused.

Zephyr took out his phone. "Do I need to call father and tell him you're willing to harm the company's interests just to suppress me? I don't think he'd sit idly by."

Hubert was momentarily speechless, anger flashing in his eyes. He couldn't let Leonard know about his underhanded tactics. He had planned to secure the deal first and then accuse Zephyr of incompetence. He didn't expect Finnegan to deviate from his plan.

"You're really useless, tattling at your age?" Hubert mocked.

Zephyr stayed calm. "As long as it works on you."

To deal with someone like Hubert, there was no need for pride. He thought of Jane's words: No matter the method, as long as it worked.

Hubert finally left reluctantly, finding an excuse.

Finnegan was curious about how Zephyr managed to make Hubert leave but didn't ask much since it was a family matter.

The three of them sat in a pavilion by the shore, enjoying the breeze and coffee, waiting for the food to be served.

Zephyr opened a bottle of wine and poured some for Finnegan. "Mr. Foster, try my homemade wine."

Finnegan didn't refuse and took a small sip. It was sweet and smooth, surprising him. The wine tasted really good, not like it was made by an amateur.

"Mr. Wright, did you really make this wine yourself?"

Zephyr smiled. "I wouldn't lie about that."

Jane chimed in, "He stayed up all night, making five batches of wine, and this is the one he was most satisfied with."

"Really?" Finnegan took another look at Zephyr. If Zephyr didn't have the status of an illegitimate child, his temperament and character would actually suit Finnegan quite well.

"I remember when I was a kid, I first tasted my grandfather's homemade wine at my grandmother's house. I thought it was delicious, so I secretly ate two big bowls when the adults weren't looking. I didn't expect the homemade wine to be intoxicating too."

"There was a river behind my grandfather's house. I ran out in a daze and fell into the river. It was winter, and I was wearing a cotton-padded jacket, sinking straight down. If my wife hadn't found me and quickly called my grandfather, I might have drowned in that river."

Finnegan reminisced, a look of nostalgia on his face.

Jane glanced at him. "So, you and Mrs. Foster grew up together?"

"Yeah, she's the daughter of my grandfather's neighbor," Finnegan replied.

Zephyr chimed in, "No wonder you two have such a great relationship. Growing up together is something to envy."

Finnegan nodded, a soft light in his eyes. It was clear he loved his wife very much.

Jane noticed a hint of sadness in Zephyr's tone and wondered if he was thinking of Sandy. Though they didn't grow up together, young love is unforgettable. Jane felt a bit uncomfortable.

Just then, the dishes started arriving.

"Come on, Mr. Wright, let's have a drink with your homemade wine," Finnegan said.

"Sure," Zephyr responded.

"Mr. Wright, your wound hasn't healed yet. You shouldn't drink now. How about I drink on your behalf?" Jane was concerned.

"It's fine, it's just a small wound," Zephyr smiled. He wouldn't let Jane drink on his behalf in a situation like this. Securing the deal was worth any discomfort.

"Mr. Wright, how did you get injured?" Finnegan asked.

"He took a bullet for me," Jane answered.

Finnegan was surprised. "He took a bullet for you? That sounds serious."

"Yes," Jane explained her background and how Zephyr got injured protecting her.

Finnegan listened, his prejudice against Zephyr fading. He didn't expect such a story.

"Ms. Harvey, you used to be a cop? That's brave. Here's to you," Finnegan raised his glass.

"Thank you." Jane raised her coffee cup. "I still have to drive later, so I'll toast with coffee."

"I understand," Finnegan laughed and downed his drink.

Zephyr poured him another glass. "I want to toast you. Thank you for meeting with me."

Finnegan looked at him. "Adversity reveals true character. Mr. Wright, you're a good man. It's just a pity..." He smiled and downed his drink.

Everyone understood the unfinished sentence. It was a pity Zephyr was an illegitimate child.

After finishing his drink, Zephyr noticed two dogs nearby. One was a purebred Pomeranian, the other a stray black dog. The black dog had a sausage, but the Pomeranian blocked its way and took the food, leaving the black dog whimpering.

Zephyr saw himself in the black dog. "Jane, do you see those two dogs? They're both dogs, but their natures are worlds apart. That black dog's food was taken away, and it might go hungry today. I'm going to feed it."

Jane was stunned, watching Zephyr walk away. She suddenly understood. She turned to Finnegan. "Mr. Foster, you don't want to cooperate with us because of Mr. Wright's status as an illegitimate child, right?"

Finnegan took a sip of wine and stayed silent.

Jane continued, "Mr. Foster, you're a wise businessman. You know a person's character isn't defined by their background. Some people have flawed backgrounds but are inherently good, while others with noble origins are filled with malice. Judging solely based on background is unfair to us."
