Chapter 523 Promising to Marry Him
Nora watched the children leave before turning her attention to the screen, where Matthew appeared. The background behind Matthew didn't resemble a hotel setting.
Nora inquired, "You're not at the hotel?"
"No, I'm home," Matthew replied.
Nora fell silent, speculating that he might have been concerned about infecting other guests at the hotel.
Nora asked, "Are you feeling unwell now?"
Matthew smiled faintly, and replied, "Dr. Smith, you don't need to worry about my health. I'm aware of my condition. I wanted to tell you that my men found a lead on the man from yesterday."
Nora sat up slightly, "Who is that homeless man?"
Matthew explained, "He's not homeless; he's an HIV carrier with a family. Someone paid him a large sum to infect you. He must have felt he had nothing to lose, and the money would improve his family's life."
Nora's eyes widened in disbelief, "Who would be so malicious as to do that?"
"There has been a car following us since yesterday. At first, I thought it was a coincidence until the incident occurred," Matthew paused. "My men started investigating the car and traced it back to a person."
"Who?" Nora asked.
Matthew answered, "Arthur."
Nora instinctively glanced at Aaron. Aaron narrowed his eyes, his thin lips pressed together like a sharp blade.
Nora asked, "Did Arthur instruct that man to do it?"
Nora, like Aaron, hadn't expected Arthur to be involved.
"Yes," Matthew nodded, then asked Nora, "Do you have any grudges against Arthur?"
Nora felt speechless and somewhat ridiculous.
'Do I have a grudge against Arthur? Could it be because I cured Chloe's illness, which led to Arthur's forced divorce, so he wanted to retaliate against me?' Nora couldn't think of any other reason.
"Perhaps," Nora replied.
Matthew continued, "During this time, he has been taking care of a girl with a mental illness."
"Olivia, right? She's Arthur's niece," Nora said.
Matthew raised an eyebrow in surprise, and informed, "No, she's his biological daughter."
Nora was once again shocked. "What! Olivia is Arthur's biological daughter? How do you know?" she asked.
Matthew smiled, and said, "I found out through the investigation."
Nora pressed her red lips together, glancing at Aaron, feeling that Arthur was truly sinister.
Nora concluded, 'Fortunately, I cured Chloe's illness, otherwise, Arthur would have spent his life with the Woodhouse family's money, supporting his mistress and daughter. No wonder he wanted to retaliate against me. Because I cut off his source of income.'
Aaron's face turned cold. He didn't care about Arthur's private life, he just found Arthur disgusting.
Aaron thought, 'He retaliated against Nora because she is gentle and easily bullied. Why didn't he retaliate against me? After all, Olivia will become mentally ill, and I am an indirect factor.'
"Mr. Jones, who are you exactly?" Nora asked, her suspicions rising.
Nora pondered, 'He can't be an ordinary person. Otherwise, he wouldn't know so many people, and he wouldn't be able to find out such private information.'
Before Matthew could speak, Aaron interjected, "Mr. Jones, you're the heir of the Jones family, right?"
Matthew glanced at him, "It seems Mr. Gordon has already investigated me?"
"Of course, only by understanding the enemy can one win, isn't it?" Aaron said.
Matthew smiled slightly, and replied, "Indeed, I am the heir of the Jones family. The Jones family is a superfamily hidden from the world, and in Chrisland, although such superfamilies are not many, they do exist."
"These families, because they hold too much power and wealth, have always been low-key to avoid unnecessary trouble. I am already the fifth-generation heir of the Jones family."
As Nora listened to his explanation and observed his calm demeanor, she couldn't help but admire him, but also felt a great deal of regret.
'He is the fifth-generation heir, but he won't live long. And I am the one who caused his impending death!' With these thoughts, Nora felt even more guilty.
Nora apologized, "Mr. Jones, I'm sorry."
Matthew smiled, and asked, "Dr. Smith, are you really that guilty toward me?"
"Yes," Nora nodded and replied, "I really feel guilty. It's my fault that you're in this situation."
Matthew chuckled, and teased, "If you're truly sorry, then fulfill my wish and marry me."
'He's bringing this up again!' Nora thought as she licked her lips, unsure of what to say.
Aaron, who was beside her, snatched her phone, his face cold, and said angrily, "Mr. Jones, you're going too far. As the heir of the Jones family, you should be more cautious in making decisions. It's despicable of you to demand that she marry you just because you saved her."
Matthew smiled slightly, and replied, "Thank you for the compliment, Mr. Gordon. It is precisely because of my caution that I hope Dr. Smith will marry me. The Jones family cannot be in decline in my generation."
Aaron stared at the screen and asked in a cold voice, "What do you mean?"
Matthew said, "I have observed that Dr. Smith is excellent in both her career and family, much like my deceased wife. As long as she marries me, she can take over the Jones family in the name of my wife and continue to guard the Jones family for me."
Aaron thought, 'So that's his goal! He wants Nora to protect the Jones family after his death!'
Aaron's face turned cold, "Mr. Jones, you're not cautious, you're selfish!"
Matthew raised an eyebrow, taunting, "Mr. Gordon, everyone has a different perspective, and therefore, different conclusions, isn't it?"
Aaron said in a cold voice, "Mr. Jones, give it up. Nora will never marry you. If you dare to covet her again, no matter who you are, I will fight you to the end! Also, if you have any business in the future, just contact me directly, and don't come to harass her again!"
After speaking, Aaron directly ended the video call and then deleted Matthew's phone and other contact information.
Aaron quickly completed all the operations.
Nora was speechless. She pleaded, "Aaron, don't do this."
Aaron glanced at her, "Nora, do you really want to agree to his unreasonable request and marry him?"
Nora bit her lip and said softly, "I owe him."
This statement instantly made Aaron angry. He remarked, furiously, "You owe him, so you're going to marry him? Have you ever considered my feelings? Nora, do you want me to suffer from depression because I miss you too much and eventually die?"
Nora thought with doubt, 'Aaron's words are too exaggerated, right?'
Nora looked at him and smiled bitterly, saying, "Aaron, you're a man, it shouldn't be that serious, right?"
Aaron glared at her, upset, and said, "Who said men can't be depressed? Do you know how important you are to me?"
Nora bit her red lip, feeling warm inside, but not knowing what to say.
Aaron threw her phone onto the sofa, stood up, and cautioned, "Nora, if you're not afraid of me doing something crazy, then agree to him."
